    Wow, this was quite a bit more involved for a distro installation than most, but it's not as bad they were before VM's came out around the turn of the century. Thanks for putting this together. Now to clone the baseline and evaluate the other available packages.

      You're welcome. Glad it helped!! Luckily Arch Linux recently started including an install script with their install image. I have a video on this as well. No I don't think it should be this difficult haha but it really helps you learn about the interworking and how stuff is setup on the system.

    very easy to follow, and what a great way to learn about how linux works behind the scenes. Wish I could say the same for the official tutorial, I can't imagine being a beginner and trying to follow that junk of redirect and low level language. With this tutorial it was clear what each command did at a high level. though the exact syntax eludes me still, I was able to follow along with the process and understood most steps.

      The NAT adapter should work fine. Remember since it's a virtual machine it will only emulate the current connect (pass it through) so it doesn't matter what you are connect to as long as you have a network connection.

      All are good for dev don't get hung up on that just find one you find pleasing. All the same tools can be installed across the board. Look up arch wiki after deciding on a desktop and they'll have in depth instruction on how to install.

      VBox because it's free and there's not much it can't do. VMWare player is nice at an enterprise level (vm management tools), but I haven't really found anything extra in one vs the other to really be like "yeah there's a clear winner"...

    All right I don't subscribe to anybody until I successfully install whatever it is I came for. I remember I was watching your video on a different Linux and I can't get that installed so I'm not subscribing yet. I have my doubts that I will be able to install Arch Linux but we'll give it a shot.

    24:40 this step is much easier when you have NetworkManager installed after that you can just sudo systemctl enable NetworkManager and reboot and you have networking!

      In vim you press "i" for "insert" and when you're done you can press escape and then one of these:
      ":wq" Save and quit
      ":x" Save and quit
      ":q!" Don't save but quit

    Tip: As far as I understand, enabling EFI in System > motherboard (VM settings) is required to boot into UEFI mode, so it's not optional.

      You can boot with 32bit and MBR.

      Yes some of the steps would be different, mainly how the VM is setup. Not much, but you're right not really the right tutorial for that. You would want to make sure virtualization is enabled.

      You'll type a colon (:) followed by an x those two together and enter (you'll see them displayed at the bottom left side. You can also use a different text editor instead of VIM like nano if it is easier for you.

    10:49 is it possible to format both partitions as ext4? Is there a reason for formatting the efi partition as fat32?

      Yes, there's a reason. It's for the EFI partition and needs to be fat32 to work properly.

    You forgot to add the virtualbox-guest-utils and xf86-video-vmware. Also, to enable the dhcpcd after installation. At least that's how I did it on my system after following this tutorial. Good job other than that.

      Yeah all good mentions for a virtual machine. Those two packages don't really help until you have some type of environment setup. They mainly help with rendering graphics in virtual machines. Thanks.

      @@SavvyNik I am actually one of them. Well, sort of. In 1998, I bought a copy of Red Hat Linux for $60. It was an absolute nightmare. You couldn't find drivers for anything. None of my devices worked. I think the only desktop available was Enlightenment. So, I keep coming back to see the advances in Linux but one thing held me back from using it. My touchpad would work but it was not controllable. Now, I just received a new linux compatible laptop and I am ready to give it another go. I cannot stand Windows. I only want to use it for a few things. So, I am going to dual boot Windows and Arch.

      I'm not following. The entire process for installing and booting is shown in the video.. Can you host another machine inside the Arch Linux machine? Well dual-boot should be fine, but a VM inside a VM? Probably not a good idea.

    Everything was going fine until 13:45, when I try to run `arch-chroot /mnt` it says there's no file or directory, Im even using the 2021.01.01 release
    Edit: some trouble shooting revealed that I probably mounted something incorrectly, oops

    I really thought...I should try Arch Linux, and after trying to install Arch Linux, I gotta say...guys if you're new and facing difficulties....try Manjaro or Endeavour. They are awesome. And if you're into Linux, you know how people are loving Manjaro.

      @@SavvyNik I would recommend viewers to atleast have a month or two of experience in Debian based or Fedora, if you're new to linux. I use Pop_OS. And Fedora 34 is lit. What do you think @SavvyNik?

      To each their own, I don't necessarily recommend viewers to start anywhere. It depends on the scope of what they are doing. Perhaps, they need to learn about a particular distro/os for school/work or need something minimal for an older computer. These are all different use cases. I myself really enjoy using PopOS! and suggest that to new users as well as experienced ones.

      u need to put a dot on the end
      so like (cp examples/ethernet-dhcp .)
      yes i was also confused until i read about the cp command and realized that it needs a destination

      VirtualBox emulates your wireless as a wired connection. Select NAT or bridged network in your VM settings and set it up like you have a physical ethernet port

      A swap part is kind of an old deal since you can create a swap file instead and it's just as effective and easier. Some people don't need swap space if their system has plenty of memory, but if you want to create a swap file here's how - th-cam.com/video/HSbBl31ohjE/w-d-xo.html

    I just got the problem @24:40 that the sudo command doesn't ask me for a password. I can just write text below. If i click enter, then the console says: [written text]: command not found
    [3]+ Stopped.
    Is there a problem with my sudo setup?

      You're welcome. Make sure to smash that like button for me. It does sounds like your sudo config is messed up. Go back into the config (visudo) and check to see if you accidently uncommented the wrong line which I believe has the phrase "NOPASWD". What this would cause is a user of a specific group can have access without typing in a password. You'll want the one that says ALL:ALL:ALL instead.

    At 22:02 it says
    " EFI Variables are not supported on this system "
    " grub-install : error: efibootmgr failed to register the boot entry: No such file or directory ".
    But I check ls /efi the directory exist

      Check your VM Settings and confirm that you have "Enable EFI" checked under System->Motherboard.

      @@SavvyNik i liked this video . I deleted the archlinux and reinstall. Now it works fine. Do you know about the transparent terminal and icon themes. Because while i was trying to install these my arch is crashed :D You can make a video about this.

    I am having a problem with the dhcpcd.service file, it doesn't seem to exist on the system
    for context the error message is:
    Failed to enable unit: Unit file dhcpcd.service does not exist.
    I followed everything correctly and edited the file according to my eth connection on the VM from ip a.

      Arrows work fine for me. Maybe try pressing i or o and maybe it will allow you to enter info and use arrows.

      Hey there, I had this problem too. With EFI enabled choose "Reboot Into Firmware Interface" > Boot Maintenance Manager > Boot From File > Choose the option that has /CDROM somewhere in its name > EFI > BOOT > BOOTx64.EFI. That should load you back into the menu with the installer options!

      Are you sure you set the EFI enabled BIOS mode on for your virtual machine in the settings? It was shown in the video.

      Sometimes that can create missing/broken bones packages in which you would need to purge the package you were trying to install and try again.

      Honestly Peter, I would not start with Arch Linux if you are a beginner. This is an involved install. What is meant by "beginner" here is people who's first time it's install Arch Linux that have used Linux before. This is because Arch is harder to install than most distros.

      Hope this helps: cp is the copy command. I think you need to list a location to copy to after your command (no idea how he made that work). Thus, I believe you need to (in the /etc/netctl directory) do cp examples/ethernet-dhcp /etc/netctl

      I was already in the folder I needed to copy to but your idea sounds like it will work ^^ you can always use absolute paths.. meaning directly reference from the root directory /some/folders/examples/ethernet-dhcp /some/folders/etc/netctl

      I would try an older version of VBox. Yes, you could install arch on a USB. The usb would show up as a device and you could partition it as needed.

      @@AcidiFy574 I thought the initial RAM usage was < 100MB. Besides that the only other bottleneck you would have is transfer speeds between the USB and CPU.

      There are a ton of desktops environments out there available to Arch. You'll need to research what you like and then install. A great place for guidance is the arch wiki.

    trying to do cp examples/ when setting up netctl gives me this message
    "cp: missing destination file operand after 'examples/'
    one other thing to mention was that during the shutdown of the live installation was that i noticed there was one error in the shutdown
    failed unmounting /run/archiso/bootmnt
    i thought it was something i didn't do on my side but i also realized you got the same error. is there any steps you could have missed? if so what is the fix for this?

    Hi, I was having some trouble doing a login after rebooting the VM after the basic setup, but for some reason, it shows 'login incorrect', even tho I put in the right username and password. Can you help me with this? Thanks in advance :)

      Try logging in as your root instead. user: root password: whatever you set during installation. If that logs in then you probably messed up creating the regular user. You can recreate one using root. And make sure to smash the like button while you're reading ;)

      Yes, you just pick the closest mirror to you. It just helps with download speeds. It doesn't really matter where you get it from.

    Update: I finally found a fix, you can just use archfi, but if you want the complex way, you can just go with this tutorial.

      minimal BASH like line editing is supported.For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else tab lists possible device or file completion.

      @@sagarprasad1436 Here's a video I made about rescuing the system with GRUB th-cam.com/video/LFj_yqk6AUI/w-d-xo.html , but if you're a beginner it might be best if you restart the installation process. Keep practicing and you'll get it! The issue is something while you were configuring/installing the bootloader (GRUB). You probably missed a step.

      Arch is special in the fact that it's minimal. Only the bare necessities are installed. If you want to use a script to install arch there is now a way with their default install script. Here's a vid I made - th-cam.com/video/nx5qAUtytW8/w-d-xo.html

      The virtual machine isn't picking up on your ISO that you should have mounted in the virtual disk. Check it again.
