    It can be surprising, but mountainous areas are very prone to flash flooding during heavy rain, because storm drains overflow and small streams and river levels rise so rapidly. We have locally (Minnesota) had prairie towns ten feet underwater due to flash flooding as a result of local geography. I imagine the eastern foothills of the Appalachians are the same. Plus, there's long-term travel issues from landslides destroying major road and rail routes that in mountainous terrain means the mountains have to be blasted to rebuild the roads, which can take years.

    I'm glad everyone was safe, but I would advise erring on the side of caution as meteorologists and news reports did say it would be devastating.
