    Thanks nurdrage, since the beginning. My donation is intended on behalf of amateurs everywhere that want to contribute but might not be able to. Your pitch-shifted voice has been my catharsis during my drive to shitty jobs listening to you through headphones and also my impeteus to pursue amateur chemistry, much to the chagrin of my wife and inevitably the US ATF (great story). Rock on man.

      I really think if you still have the footage you should give us that fire from chemistry video including the failures! Knowing that something failed is just as important to scientific knowledge as knowing something that works! Similarly, footage from the furnace that you destroyed would be useful if you framed it as an exercise in what NOT to do, to share with us what problems you had and how to avoid them, as you still work towards resolving those issues for a future video, as you noted in this one.

    • @NurdRage
      @NurdRage  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

      the broken furnace is definitely going to be part of the copper refining video. The screw up was pretty small though, so it doesn't deserve a separate video. But it was catastrophic.

    • @KainYusanagi
      @KainYusanagi 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@NurdRage Fair enough! I was just thinking that it would help you create more videos out of the footage you're getting, so you can have a few in the pocket to release between other videos, which would help with the algorithm; I'd never recommend deliberately chopping up videos, but when you already have a bunch of footage from an experiment that is still being processed... Just feels like it might be a good idea to do a smaller video on what's already been done, instead of waiting for everything to be done and just doing one video on the topic; sorta like your sodium metal experiment videos.

      Nice idea! It is actually possible to just do the reaction for silane on a fireproof surface like a metal sheet or a brick in the open. Here's the thing NurdRage... I've been watching for a long time. To me, you have always come across as professional and knowledgeable, even when working with the most cobbled together setups. You always seem purposeful and deliberate. You don't dance in front of the camera, and don't really try to add bells and dog whistles. I does not matter, the expertise and enthusiasm for the topic shows through. What you do needs no embellishment. At least not in my case. You teach, you explain, you demonstrate the importance of all the steps that lead to the "climactic result," rather than just trying to get to the punchline. Again, that is my view. I have always loved what you do. If you have it in you to do more, by all means! I will enjoy each video. If you need to take care of your own life, by all means. Your real life is more important than any video I, or anyone else, might enjoy. Just know that what you do is enjoyed and appreciated. What you have done has been enjoyed and appreciated. Anything you may do in the future will continue to be so, but you do you first! The ride has been worth it to see a chemistry "youtuber" refine a fairly novel synthesis of elemental sodium. Who does that on TH-cam instead of in a lab. That alone was worth it. Take care of yourself, best wishes, and 73!

    Would love to see more videos on the rotovap.
    I know there's little reason to feature it as you want to make your experiment amateur-accessible and having a machine that only a professional (or a wealthy or sponsored amateur enthusiast) would have is probably unfair to that cause, but it's so cool-looking that it'll be great to see on occasion. Maybe as it can be used to speed up "proof of concept" type experiments that use it then a proper experiment done with more basic equipment?
    Anyway also love the transparency. It's so rare to see even in other channels who are very open with their finances. I can't speak for everyone but let me tell you every little thing you do for the channel, such as your diagrams, captioning, the lighting, and even your insight on various social and scientific issues in the old QAs (miss those!), it hasn't gone unnoticed and is greatly appreciated. Many years ago I saw an emergency respirator for miners. It resembled a gasmask. The idea seemed to be that you exhaled into a metal canister, and the moisture would release enough O2 for a next breath. It would be interesting to learn more about these...

    Thank you for updating us! It's been a great year (and, hopefully, just a taste of what's to come), both for you and for chemistry TH-cam! You have, in my honest opinion, been one of the few and first sparks that ignited the fire (heh) for and inspired many chemistry and other science channels here! I'm so glad to support you, and will do for as long as I can.
    I hope the neurotransmitters keep up with 2024! I'm proud of you!

    I've been watching your channel for a long time now, probably back to the glowstick days. You were one of the OG TH-cam chemists and are still regarded as one of the best. Failure videos are also great as we can learn so much from seeing what goes wrong. Your alkali metal videos are awesome and I would love to see if you could pull off magnesium.

    As someone who loves chemistry and being subscribed to this channel for many years, I would like thank Mr.NurdRage (and the others ; NileRed, Cody's Lab, etc. ) for inspiring me to take a path in chemistry (currently in university btw). Loved your videos btw..they are so amazing that I would watch them and learn something new everyday 😊. Here's to 2024 🎉
    As a side note, my favorite video is the one where he titrated the hydrogen peroxide, we had to do the same thing in our lab, in fact the professor used the video in our lecture halls to get the basics on physical, analytical chemistry.

    Also, keep up the good work :p

    You Cody and Tom are the main reason I got interested in chemistry and it’s set me down the amateur chemistry path, but also the academic path of chemistry! I can’t thank you enough for what you’ve done to this myself and this community and if I weren’t a broke college student I’d be donating!

    I've been around since around the start of this channel (Specifically, "Make Glass Mirrors With Silver Nitrate", your 10th video!), and I'm still here because I love the way you produce your videos and break down the science so nicely. It was sad when you took your hiatuses in the past, because for a lot of that time there wasn't someone to replace the gap you left, but now, like you said, there's a lot of them within our niche, loose 'science youtube community', if you look around. Thank you for 14 years of videos (even if not every year had videos), and here's to as many more in the future!

    • @KainYusanagi
      @KainYusanagi 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      PS: While you do have nearly 800K subscribers, considering the hiatuses over the years I'd not be surprised if your metrics were skewed towards a lower return due to age and inactivity, as the algorithm tends to prefer channels that produce consistent content and channels that are newer, unless they reach a certain threshold (which is just insulting), so I'd say that while yeah, not equivalent to minimum wage, it's still a pretty decent return within the environment it was earned. Hope you get more in the following years!

      @@ViolenceDoesntWork Ehh, he *might* lose subscribers, if they're unfitting or sketchy sponsors; I'd rather see him with some science-based sponsors, if anything; maybe rather than a sponsor for cash, a sponsor that directly gets him lab equipment or materials for science! Generally though, I agree.

    I was so happy to see this channel being active again and also noticed the amount of chemistry content last year! It was really awesome. So much stuff I always wanted to try myself or at least see in a video. And all of this even in a time where regulations on chemicals increase every year.
