    Forget capo and app until you 'get it'. I'm sure this video is made so that your ears become accustomed to the tuning process (Standard or Flat). If anybody here wishes to be any good on the guitar, you had better listen to the video and learn by listening and practising. You might find a shortcut home, but there are none here!

      @@ccoleclairee That's the faith you need Cole. Tuning by ear is the key brother, don't let up and this could well be a turning point. Tip: Tune UP to a pitch when possible.

    thanks... E flat is proportional to ~ 20 kHz, about the same as typical human cochlea resonance and the color in wavelength is divided down to fundamental (audible) frequency (straight/centered green, like leaves in the spring or summer or grass) and that is actually really close to a C flat, more like a C demiflat or B demisharp... i couldn't ever figure out why newton said it was more like an indigo color (when you divide down to the fundamental frequency)... his was based off of ancient greek sophists... so, one would need to look into sources more for whoever gave the reference for visible light... (green is ~ 400 cents/semitones (or ~ 4 frets) down the scale as to his said pie chart (or, ~ A flat))

    One thing too many people don't do, and I've seen people who played for years do this at a concert...I shook my head. They tune to a tuner, and that is IT....Nothing else. Then they wonder why the guitar sounds like crap and someone has to go do the final step. Tune the guitar to itself!!! Because it is an imperfect instrument, when we tune using a tuner, we must then go in and make sure it is as close as possible in all chords we might play. Every one has a different method for this last step, I use E A D chords and some other interspersed with other things, tougher to explain than show, but most probably do the same thing. And the human ear always prefers a little flat to a little sharp!!!! So we usually wind up playing very slightly flat. If you are perfectly in tune for any chord, you are out of tune for others on the guitar. In general, the best guitars are closest, but not always. I had a couple Taylors, and I like them a little, but still not my favorite, but they are tough to beat for intonation....pretty much as dead on as a guitar can get. And please if you own a taylor, don't take it personal, that is why we have so many different guitars. If I had my way, I'd have a guitar with the playability of a small bodied Gibson, the intonation of a Taylor, the overall sound of a Martin......but that is me. lol.....everyone's ears are different.....like with women, we all have different tastes, and thank god for that, because the world would be pretty boring if we all loved the exact same women and guitars!!.

    I saw the first comment about using Ab, Db etc because after I heard you use Eb, then say G# I smiled because the inconsistency, but KNEW that was what the tuner was showing!!! Same thing, different name, but people learning, it is probably best to keep consistent as you say in the comments. Like when telling someone what notes are in a chord, ie D major....D-F#-A.........NOW....how often in a situation like this, will someone call the F# a Gb? Not too often, but when you have something with a flat, they VERY often call it by it's enharmonic sharp. When I hear someone doing that, no biggie, but when it is a teacher telling a student, I do think it is wrong. Because it will not help him or her learn how the chords are built so he can figure anything out just using the scales. But for this, it was fine, and the most important thing, crystal clear, and proper time!! Thank you!!!!!

    I tune one fret down so I have freedom to bend the strings without fear of popping. I do have to sacrifice and use the capo if I'm playing along with any standard music obviously but my objective is to control the strings without breaking them and it works well. Kiss recorded their unplugged concert dropped one fret.
    (One can tell from a language I play by ear.)

      I would choose C for chromatic mode. G will give you guitar mode, B bass, V violin, and U is ukulele. I would choose the chromatic mode. Tune a half step down from standard guitar tuning and you should be just fine. For instance, 1/2 step down from the low E string will either say Eb or D# depending on what the manufacturer has decided to call that note. Eb and D# are the same note. Let me know if you have any other problems with this.

    When you tune to e flat do you play a fret down or play same chord position? Just new and wondering why the advantage to tune down a half or whole step

    • @quailstudios
      @quailstudios  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Tuning down gives a lower overall tone to the guitar and deepens the low end. One reason I like to tune down is to be able to sing songs that are just a little bit too high without changing all the chords. Another reason is to be able to play in flat keys without using chords that are uncomfortable to play. When playing with brass instruments this is extremely helpful. Guitar players love to play in keys with sharps and not necessarily flats. Horn players love flats because their instruments are made that way. Bb trumpet for instance. Not sure if these explanations help if you are really new to music but hang in there and you'll figure it out. Thanks for the comment and support.

    Sorry for the dumb question, but what does this tuning accomplish? I am very accomplished in classical piano so I know music theory well, but I am new to the guitar, later in life. Which keys or chords or whatever else are easier to play in an Eb tuning, and why? Thanks much.

    • @quailstudios
      @quailstudios  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should know that no question is dumb. Guitarists love to play in sharp keys. G, D, A, and E. We like C and F too but they are not sharp keys. Horn players love flat keys. Open position chords have pretty good voice leading and when playing in Eb it's better and easier to tune down 1/2 step and play the open position chords. That's kind of it in a nutshell.

      Tuning by ear is what I did when I started playing guitar in 1969. It was the only way to tune back then. I didn't get a guitar tuner until 1982. That's when I first found a tuner I could afford. That tuner was $80 and I was making $5 an hour at my day job.

      In this recording th-cam.com/video/8SbUC-UaAxEs/w-d-xo.html the guitars are tuned to standard tuning, not Eb tuning. It's possible that Guns and Roses played November Rain in Eb tuning in concert or another recording.

    • @quailstudios

      A 440. Why do you ask? Does it seem a little flat to you?

    • @blitzkrieg2116
      @blitzkrieg2116 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Quail Studios Guitar how come its 440 if its a half step down? I asked because i dont know what the exact Hz if 1/2 down.. standard is 440 so im assuming its 415 or close to 415

    • @quailstudios
      @quailstudios  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand what you are asking now. Yes, if you set your tuner to A-415 then you will be in the neighborhood of being 1/2 step down. I'm not sure if that is the correct setting actually because I have never thought of it that way before. I just tune down to Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Bb, Eb. In this video I said that the A, D and G strings were to be tuned to G#, C#, and F#. That's what it said on my tuner. They are the same notes anyway. Does that answer your question? Different tuners can give different notes for sharps and flats. Some tuners can be told to display sharps or flats, whichever you want.
      Thanks for the comment BlitzKrieg.

    • @quailstudios
      @quailstudios  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you serious Chris? I guess it could be D# G# C# F# A# D#. Or Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb... Whatever. It's all the same in the grand scheme of things.

    • @chriscurtis8052
      @chriscurtis8052 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No reason to get your strings bent out of shape !(you guess it could be ) !(Whatever) ! I don't know what tuner you are using !, but most every guitar tuner I have used , when tuning your guitar a half step down to Eb tuning will read as follows D# G#C#F#A#D# !!! and yes in the grand ole scheme of things it is the same, but at the same time, it is not ! You should explain that ! because the majority of guitar tuners will not say Eb Ab Db Gb Bb Eb ! and that sir is confusing to some ! not me ! but some will not understand it !

    • @quailstudios
      @quailstudios  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi again Chris, I have several tuners. My iStrobosoft app says Eb, G#, C#, G#, Bb, Eb, but I can set it to all sharps if I want to, Cleartune app says Eb, Ab, C#, F#, Bb, Eb. n-Track Tuner app says D#, G#, D#, G#, A#, D#. Polytune Clip says D#, G#, C#, F#, A#, D# because it gives the note and then a dot meaning that the note is sharp. I didn't check my Boss TU-2 it's out in my performing gear and I didn't want to dig it out. I think it just gives a light on the note too. Pretty simple. Thanks for bantering with me Chris. :)

      It lowers the pitch and so makes the color of the guitar slightly different. Many bands have tuned to Eb over the years. Nirvana, Jimi Hendrix, Guns and Roses, Slayer, Smashing Pumpkins... Here is a link from Ultimate Guitar where people talk about bands that have worked with Eb tuning. www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/archive/index.php?t-1096278.html

    Viewers, beware!!! This is not accurate tuning. Different devices create different notes. The speakers of your devices may sound different than the actual tuning. This tuning video does not work for me.

    • @quailstudios
      @quailstudios  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      For best results fine tune your guitar after tuning by ear with this video J Pon. This will get you in the ball park but differences in guitars, strings, and devices will give you different results.

      The guitar tuner was on my lap so that I could check to make sure that the note was playing in tune. Strings do not make a perfect note. They usually climb a little sharp at the beginning of their vibration sequence and then sink in pitch a tad. I tune my strings to the note that it settles on after about 1/2 second.
