    Being anxious about sleeping can lead to difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep. When we are feeling anxious, our body releases stress hormones, such as cortisol and adrenaline, which can make it hard to relax and fall asleep. Additionally, anxiety can cause racing thoughts and a constant state of alertness, making it challenging to quiet the mind and drift off into a restful slumber. The fear of not being able to sleep or the consequences of poor sleep can also create a negative cycle of worry and anxiety that keeps us awake. Ultimately, this can lead to sleep deprivation, which can have a significant impact on our physical and mental well-being.

    For the first time in days, after watching this video I actually fell asleep! And better, I woke up early and recharged! I did do some breathing exercises to calm my anxiety down and told myself that "It's alright if I don't fall asleep, it would be more fun if I stayed up all night listening to music" then I fell asleep! I was diagnosed with OCD this year but i also have anxiety and ADHD. I have had chronic sleep problems since childhood. It used to be the inability to fall asleep at night. Now, my issues lie with having such shallow sleep i never feel rested. I feel “awake” the whole night. Kind of like meditating instead of sleeping. I hear thoughts running around in my brain and often times music or a song plays over and over again. I always wake up exhausted and feeling stressed bc i never get a break from my brain. I kind find much info on this either but wanted to see if any else struggles with this.

    This is one of the most frustrating things I've ever had to deal with in my entire life and it drives me literally insane. Like I'm tired ALL day, and as soon as my head hits the pillow and I begin drifting off to bed, a small voice says "but what if you can't fall asleep tonight" coupled with a shot of adrenaline, and then.. you guessed it, up for several hours contemplating every decision that led me to that exact moment in my life. It's becoming unbearable, and I'm going to try the method in the video to cure this.
    It's absolutely to do with work; I get anxious because my job is stressful and I need sleep to operate efficiently at my job. But that anxiety is inevitably what prevents me from falling asleep. I've had the same job for over eight years, and it's no different than it was eight years ago. But something within my brain has triggered this and now I cannot get it to stop.
    So for anybody who's out there struggling, encountering a similar difficulty, just know you aren't alone. It's an extremely isolating experience, especially if you have a partner beside you who's sleeping while you're silently struggling to do the same. Just know that I'm probably out there, enduring the same pain you're in. But hopefully for not much longer! 😂

    • @DavidCrescent
      @DavidCrescent 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@paokgate4a737 I'm still working on it unfortunately. It seems like some weeks are good and some are bad. I'm in the middle of a bad week right now. The thing I found to help the most is to go to bed when you actually feel tired, not necessarily at a certain time (even though that's against convention). The nights I go to bed when I still feel awake are the ones that are the most challenging.
      Something I'm considering is setting up another bed in the basement, or in another room of the house. I think my brain has tied this negative association to the physical location of my bedroom. Nights when I can't sleep I seem to be able to when I go to the couch. I recommend trying this the next time you are having a hard time sleeping.

      @@raidbn4060 I'm very sorry to hear that. I don't know if it will reassure you, but we're still alive, and that night after writing my comment, instead of trying to fall asleep I tried to stay awake convincing myself that I didn't need nor want to sleep and that listening to music all night would be more fun, and I think I fell asleep in under 30 min. It wasn't enough sleep because it was already 3 hours before my alarm, but it was still sleep, and a fun 30 minutes listening to music before it :)
      Now I try to apply it every night. Instead of staying only 5 minutes on my phone to change my mind and relax because I believe I need to relax quickly then sleep right away, I do not worry about the time I spend on my phone, I even tell myself that I wish to spend all night on it and that I don't want to sleep. And then I yawn and put it down and go to sleep. I spend more time on my phone but less time worrying and I end up sleeping way sooner.
      I hope you will also find a way to care less about sleep, and I wish you well ❤️

      @ame_vagabonde 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      Hi everyone :)
      I had written an answer to the first commenter but it seems to have disappeared, so I'm gonna do it again.
      I survived to that night, and you will too. Trying not to sleep did improve my sleep! That first time, I put my headphones on and tried to listen to music all night. Because it would be more fun, right? I think I may have fallen asleep after 30 min or so. It wasn't enough sleep because it was already so late, but it was the end of that torturous night.
      Since then, I kept thinking like that, convincing myself that I didn't want to sleep. Instead of thinking "I should really stop looking at my phone and sleep because I'm already 5 min late and because blue light will prevent me from sleeping", I think "I don't need to sleep. I'm just gonna watch another video because it would be more fun". I end up yawning and falling asleep almost instantly when I finally put my phone down, which is way sooner than when I spent hours turning and worrying in my bed.
      I also found a trick during my final exams week. I record myself reading my notes (it's boring, and I yawn a lot during it, which is even better) then listen to it in my bed. That way, even if I don't sleep, that time isn't wasted because I'm studying, but I swear I never listened to the end of any of those.
      Hope this helps. :)

I thought that I was the only one I thought I had developed a conditions, some rare medical condition that was going to prevent me from falling asleep. The best night of sleep I’ve had since January 5 was when I got drafted into an impromptu full court basketball game by a family of seven down here in Southern Texas Mexico border, and we played for over solid hour. Oh my god I needed this video! Thank you! I’ve had insomnia for the past year or so and didn’t realize I’ve been in engaging in so many of these obsessive behaviors. It’s like you know me 😂😢 how do you cope with racing ocd thoughts at night? I try just not fighting back, but the content is so triggering and it’s exhausting. And how do you resist constant urges to to shift, readjust, itch yourself while in bed? I try so hard to ignore these urges to move in bed but can’t resist for long. For example I will keep getting small itches on various parts of my body while trying to sleep. Soon as I itch one another pops up, so I think it’s just anxiety. My brain is like we *have* to itch if that makes sense… I can’t sleep to tolerate any physical discomfort/itchiness while trying to sleep.

    • @Oliverkor
      @Oliverkor ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For the constant urges to readjust. Try practicing it during the day. Close your eyes breathe in through nose and out through mouth in some rhythmic pattern. And set a timer for how much you can. During that time if you notice thoughts of wanting to move or scratch an itch, lean into those thoughts, purposely feel them, purposely pay attention to them to make yourself uncomfortable, and still don't give in. A lot easier to say then do, I know. But think about it this way. It's only 10 minutes (or whatever you set the time to), you can do it for 10 minutes. What's the worst case scenario if you don't scratch yourself during those 10 minutes? You'll be uncomfortable but that's ok, it's worth it as you are training yourself to not do so at night. Training yourself that you don't have to give in to urges instantly. You'll most likely be surprised but if you resist the first few minutes often times the itch will go away, and if it doesn't that's ok too, you're still making yourself stronger.

    • @Oliverkor
      @Oliverkor ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For content look into imaginal exposures. It's the struggle against the content, trying to prove it isn't or is so, wondering when it will all end, wondering if you'll sleep the night, will a lack of sleep make the next day bad, if you don't sleep will the content come true. It's all this analysis about it that's truly the exhausting part. When you notice you are obsessing, that you are in an unhelpful logical loop, then give up the struggle. "Maybe it's true, maybe not." Again simple but not easy in the slightest. But what's the alternative, what will happen if you keep engaging in the fight? (probably what's already been happening). Do your best to stop analyzing. And if you're struggling, get out of bed and go do something. Shift your mind away from this obsessing. If you don't sleep, so be it. You already handled a year of insomnia, you can handle another worst case. And if you're not falling asleep, why lie down and worry, do something else with that time. Your body will force you to sleep regardless. I know this sounds very tough to accept. But the irony is by accepting the possibility of not sleeping well this night, you are no longer stressing over whether you will sleep well or not. And most of the time that will help you sleep. It's an interesting paradox.

    I wear ear plugs every night because everything, every tiny noise annoys me and keeps me up while it doesn't bother anyone else the slightest. Some nights it's ridiculous, vehicles driving up the road, dogs barking, creaking floor sounds, even the fan I use to drown out those noises can mess with me because of the sound of vibration and squeaky noise. Some nights I'll go through like 3 different fans trying to find one that sounds right, I'll still be up all night.

    I have OCD/Anxiety and Sleep Apnea. I don’t really have things I have to have a certain way, but I sometimes get panic attacks right as I’m almost asleep. Then I obsess over them happening again. Sometimes I worry about the effectiveness of my CPAP mask especially when I have a stopped up nose/allergies. The other things that I think trigger the attacks is being able to hear every little noise outside whether it’s a car coming down the road or something like the wind causing trees to make noise. It doesn’t happen every night but has gotten to the point where it’s almost every other night. Kind of an exhausting thing after I have fought to get adjusted to using a CPAP this past year and was just getting settled into it.

Instead I either get up and just wait to finally get tired, or I just "rest". When I stop TRYING to fall asleep I usually eventually do. The problem is functioning the next day in little or no sleep. BTW Rain videos on TH-cam help.

      Guided meditations to relax is ONLY a compulsion if you ONLY do it to help you fall asleep. If you do meditations to say lower your stress only....that's fine. When you slept well, did you think about sleep ? Nope. That's the attitude you need. Sleep is automatic. When tired go to bed. Only go to bed tired. Most importantly ...get up at the same time.

Dr Claire Weekes developed this approach many years ago, apparently she herself suffered from anxiety/panic disorder when she was young. I've found her book "help for your nerves" very interesting and powerful when dealing with anxiety etc....specially the "setback" approach that's key because when we leave the "door" open it will come back so it's important to understand how to deal with setbacks.
