Is the 2021 I-Pace good enough to lead Jaguar to 'EV only' by 2025 ?! [Road Test]

  • Car manufacturers often make bold claims and bold statements, but saying you will only make electric vehicles from 2025 when you currently only make one is pretty bold. Thanks to Harwoods Jaguar Chichester, I spent a couple of days with the latest Jaguar I-Pace. The simple question is...is it good enough to take Jaguar on that journey ?

I agree with your overall enthusiasm for the iPace. I’ve had mine fir two years and absolutely love it. My previous cars have been a Porsche Boxster, a Porsche 911 (997) C4S and a Porsche 911 (996) Turbo . The iPace is just as much fun to drive as the Porsche sports cars and it’s far easier to get in and out of and far more practical as a daily driver. I get 420 km range only needing to charge it once a week on my 7kw home charger that takes about 8 hours. For a long trip there is absolutely nothing wrong with stopping for half an hour for coffee & lunch whilst getting a 40 to 80% charge in half an hour on a 50kw public charger. Do yourself a favor and buy that iPace you love, it’s a fantastic car, you won’t regret it!! Cheers Martin Rees New Zealand

I absolutely love the Jaguar I-Pace and it is defiantly my favorite EV on the market today. I've test driven a lot of EV over the last few years including the Ford Mach-e and the Tesla X and none of them give me the joy of driving a "Performance inspired" EV like the I-pace. Jaguar driving instructor even let me drag race a F-type in the I-Pace and it was amazing the way the electric motor put down the torque to the ground was like nothing I've felt before.

I have 2019 I-Pace too. If I was to go 230 miles, I would just stop somewhere on the way to add 30 miles. That would take about 10 minutes, which is enough time to use a bathroom.

@@tomusiaka Exactly. I thought the same thing when he said the range wasn't quite enough. Few people would drive 200+ miles without some sort of stop for maybe 30 minutes or so...

But.... if you need a reliable charging network, the only one you can rely on is Tesla’s network.
If I was in Ped’s position with work & life, the I-Pace wouldn’t be suitable.
When we can start hosting Supercar Experience days again, I couldn’t use the Jag, as it would add 2hrs to my drive home from some events.
If I’m unfortunate enough that I need to take a Lamborghini or a Ferrari home, I have to stop 3 times for fuel, which is a real pain..... and that’s only a 10min stop!
I’m with Ped on this one, if you do a lot of driving & you have a long journey, all you want to do is get there with the least amount of drama possible...... and for that, you need a Tesla.

    • @PaulSouthport
      @PaulSouthport 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@thomassneath8134 which is why I said day to day road car. The vast majority of car use is short runs. If I wanted to go to south of France I’d hire a car, not take the iPace.

@@thomassneath8134 avoid ecotricity and actually there are a lot of reliable chargers: BP, Shell, instavolt, genie point, etc. All take contactless and most are affordable. I have 2019 I-pace live near Slough and have done trips and holidays all over before lockdown. Drove to wells in Somerset and back on a single charge. Ok it’s only 190 miles round trip, but majority is motorways and the mendips! When lockdown ends I’m driving to Perthshire in Scotland. Ped just buy one, Tesla range is never as high as they claim.

Great film as always Ped. With you on the I-Pace. We love Jaguar (I’ve had an F-Type and my wife drives an E-Pace). There is a sense that it’s the slight lack of range and the efficiency that stop the I-Pace being a Tesla beater, but we’re still very tempted, particularly as the Model Y is still a way off…🧐

Unfortunately I don’t think you will have a choice, we will al be going EV in the UK at least. Need to look at our attitude towards driving and planning our routes and breaks for brief charges before going on with the journey. It really isn’t as difficult as everyone on here make it out to be. Obviously if you can charge from home it is much easier and more convenient. Leave home everyday with a full charge/tank of fuel. Whilst i was asleep. Not an issue. About a penny a mile in fuel costs. No brainier compared with 10-20pence per mile on an ICE vehicle.

@James Calvert Fossil fuel industry really want to see hydrogen being adopted because it will keep them in business. Very little hydrogen is created using renewable technology. Information coming from the likes of Hyundai, Kia and MG regarding range and charging speeds for their forthcoming releases should make Jaguar think about their range and charging speeds. Sure the IPace is beautiful inside and the handling is exceptional but, if Jaguar don't up their game they are going to be left behind.

Great vid, i love this car. I have a similar problem as you that I own a second gaff in Wales, Ffair Rhos to be precise. 260miles ish from Surrey. I have a Freelander 2 and a motorbike. When i go by car, I just want to get there asap and get the logs on the fire. By bike, with a range of 160 miles ish, I'm happy to stop off say in Bath or Bristol to refill. This is very relaxing and now part of the journey as I can break the journey to check out the shops and cafe's (for lunch) which i now call part of the journey. So i would research the best charging points for maybe lunch break, which would charge enough to get you to your destination after an hours charge or so. All part of a nice day out 👍 Sadly in lockdown this sucks.

Nice review again. Lovely car, just that range issue as you say. It’ll be interesting to see where the Q4/ID4/Enyaq sit in the mix, quoting 300 miles plus, but real world probably somewhere around the 250 mark. Still a way to go to tempt us out of ICE but we’re getting closer with each iteration.

Excellent assessment of the 2021 model. I owned a 2019 HSA throughout 2020 and agree with all the points you make (except in relation to the infotainment system which was nowhere near as good as it is in the latest model).
I sold the I-Pace because of the range limitations, as you rightly point out, and the dire public charging infrastructure which you have highlighted in previous reviews. Don’t even get me started on Ecotricity, although InstaVolt gets top marks. I sold the Jaguar and bought a Model 3 Long Range which addresses my two main problems, range and charging. Incidentally, as you know, the M3 is considerably more efficient than the I-Pace which is a real watt-guzzler. I was using 360 watt/hours per mile with the I-Pace while the M3 (on a smaller battery) gets its 300+ range because it do a mile on under 250 W/h. It is much cheaper to run, especially with my overnight Octopus rate of 5p per unit and the greater range (which means using less of the expensive public energy). Over the course of a year this is a significant saving, not that my primary consideration has ever been cost saving to that extent. It’s nice to have, though.
The Model 3 is a very different car, of course, and belongs to a cheaper price range than the HSE. The Jaguar is probably better built and has more of an aura of luxury. But the Tesla is remarkably well equipped with driver aids (better than the Jaguar) and I do not feel short changed having made the swap. I am revelling in the minimalism compared with the compromise layout of the Jaguar’s controls. Incidentally, I considered all the other high-end EVs (including Mercedes, Audi, Porsche, Polestar) but share the Jaguar’s major problem of not having access to a grown-up charger network. As an all rounder, I feel happier with the Tesla. We’ll have to see how I feel after a year...

@@chruth1986 Yeah, but a "short break" can fully recharge a petrol car for another 230 miles.
It's not about being die-hard, it's about there not being a workable alternative yet. With a disability and somewhat dependent on medical equipment, an EV would be even more restricting.

A good video Ped. I’d like to address the range thing from my perspective as a driver trainer.
The journey from Chichester to Cornwall is a long one with few fast roads and a lot of tourist traffic at times. As a Portsmouth resident I’ve done the journey to Devon a few times in an EV. Any driver doing this journey should take a short break. The Highway Code rule 91 says 15 minutes every two hours. If I was doing a fleet assessment on a driver who said they were doing 4 to 6 hour plus journeys without stopping my report would reflect discussions we’d have around it and if they said their boss made them do it the report would be worded to make their boss realise how irresponsible they’re being.
OK you might say I’m being pedantic but this is how roads should safely be used. On your journey to Cornwall you wouldn’t run the iPace almost flat then look for a charger to fill it right up again. You just need to stop somewhere on the way for 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the charger, to add another 50 to 80 miles. If you did this when the battery was about half full you’d get a lot of charge quickly. There must be times you need a quick loo break, or am I thinking like the middle aged man I am. You’d also pass dozens of rapid chargers on the way. Do you have a charger at your house in Cornwall as well?
If you love the iPace and all that stops you getting one is having to stop for 15 minutes on occasional journeys you are missing out on ownership of a very nice car. We saw the smile on your face along the B road.
Another thought on fuel tax. Have a look at the costs to the NHS of the affects of traffic pollution. There are various reports. One found about £9billion a year. One put the cost per car in London at £8,000 in its lifetime. Plus the costs to the taxpayer of decommission the North Sea infrastructure which the oil companies made the money using. The £27 billion a year fuel duty would not be missed if we didn’t have these costs. But it’s great for the government to have everyone thinking how will they replace fuel tax. It means we easily accept new taxes like road pricing.

I drive a BMW i3s and the most the GoM has ever stated as range is 226 miles on a warm day last summer, mostly it sits at about 160-170 miles. Mostly use it for journeys within 50ish miles from home. But we did travel down to Cornwall last summer with the mutt. Stopped twice, once for a bladder and coffee break and again for the mutt. Arrived with 30% charge. Both stops were about 30 mins. I do get the argument for 300+ miles but in reality, ~200 is liveable for most people most of the time and also keeps the purchase price down. iPace is a really bold Ian Callum design classic & would certainly fit our usage when the i3s is changed

Even though I have an ICE for long distance driving, I agree, I wish it had at least 300 miles of range. Another plus would be faster charging ability. Even with fast chargers you’re still looking at an hour or so to charge up.

In my mind the I-Pace will be perfect for a trip to Cornwall, wish i could afford one. I usually leave London about 4am and drive until I find a place for breakfast and toilet break (my bladder is not cast iron like yours as you can do the trip without stopping), ideal time to charge to make it with plenty of range. Now, if I was doing a 125 mile round trip in one day then I'd also want a car with more range as i wouldn't want to charge on this kind of trip (but it won't stop me getting an I-Pace if i could afford it)

Great review. I got a BMW i3 4 years ago and by comparison I quickly started to see our ICE second car as expensive to run (fuel, servicing costs) and generally just frustrating to live with - noisy, lack of one-pedal driving, having to scrape ice off it in winter, getting into an oven in the summer etc. I really wanted to get an iPace as my next car, but sadly outside my lease limit - oddly the more OTR expensive Mercedes EQC was not so waiting on one of those.

The challenge for me is what can you tow with an electric car? Can you do a video on this please, there’s got to be a few caravaners or people who tow trailers from time to time in your 100K subscribers.

I have a 2020 iPace that I think is absolutely brilliant in most respects.
The two key downsides are the range and charging infrastructure, which are both covered here. However, the Jaguar does have trouble charging at sites where others can charge without a problem, so it's not all down to the infrastructure. The charging infrastructure is rapidly being upgraded so I'm less concerned about that. The only real problem I have had was around the very North of Scotland where there's next to no functioning rapid chargers.
The range on the iPace is poor when compared to other vehicles though. It appears to chew threw the electricity much faster than other cars with a similar sized battery, so needs to get more efficient. Getting more efficient means the range improves or the price drops, both good things.
Hopefully by the time I come to get my next car, probably 2023, then there will be more options out there to choose from with a good range and price point.

Great video, really enjoyed it. I tend to agree with you, I am desperate to get into a EV, but its the range issue (and the speed of charging) that's stopping me. When I have to travel a long distance, I don't want to be having to accept I am going to need to stop for a 'significant' amount of time, as well as search for a suitable/active/available charging points along that journey in order to make my destination. The serenity of driving an electric car doesn't always naturalise the anxiety felt within when commuting in a EV over long distances... but once it does, (and i hope its real soon) then I'm all in :)

    - it has heads up display which can show everything except range left in battery
    - steering wheel adjustment still manual, but seats/mirrors ARE electric/memory based, so when a diff driver gets in (which is the main point of having memory based settings) they still have to adjust the steering wheel manually
    - heated steering wheel temp is fixed and almost scalds your hands after 5 mins
    - no visible indication your cars charging once you lock it
    - when you select drive mode you dont know what mode you're in since its not displayed anywhere
    - no wireless charging on my 'high spec' model

Also it's let me down on an almost weekly basis which is simply. not good enough for a car of this price point (mine lists at £77k but is through a salary sacrifice scheme) and if I was paying anywhere near the £1000 or so a month finance figures you'd pay to walk into a dealer and buy one I'd have returned the car months ago. So incredibly frustrating as they did such a good job on the dynamics of the car....it's the usual JLR shortfalls that let it down.

I’m just in the process of buying a new vehicle, probably the last one, before it has to be all electric.
I agree with you on the range issue, along with charging on route. However, it would be somewhat ironic if over the next few years the charging hardware issues are overcome, but then garage forecourts have to facilitate hydrogen, along with all that goes with it.
Quite a bit can happen over the next 4 years.

    • @benjaminford9932
      @benjaminford9932 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Hydrogen fuel cells are not a good option for cars. You still have to have a battery to store the electricity produced by the fuel cell and use electric motor/s to move the vehicle. It's adding a whole lot of complication for no gain. The fossil fuel industry love hydrogen because almost all of commercially available hydrogen is produced by them. The EVs coming from Hyundai and Kia in the next few month/year or so have great range and very fast charging speeds. Things are moving rapidly and Jaguar will need to up their game significantly if they are not to be left behind. Back to hydrogen, it is likely to be more suitable for large trucks in the haulage industry and shipping, and possibly aviation but, it makes no sense for general motoring/personal transport. It's difficult to store and transport and very inefficient in terms of energy requirements to produce.

You make several relevant points on the subject of hydrogen and you are probably right.
I can’t wait for the new generation EV’s, but for me they would need at least 400 miles range and very rapid charging, when required on route. Overnight charging is ok, but future batteries will have to be extremely durable and long lasting.
To be honest, I don’t think a Hyundai or Kia would be my preference, so yes, Jaguar will need to get it’s act together and pretty quickly.
I’m also interested how all the people who live in terraced houses and high rise buildings will cope with EV ownership, unless wireless charging can help.
Still think the next 4 years will be very interesting.
