This looks like a good candidate to try forge welding in a gas forge. I'm looking forward to trying the "pry it up, insert flux, then close it again" before trying the weld. As I said on a previous comment, I can get welds to work in coal, but the gas forge has been a challenge. Thanks for the great video!
You want a gas rich flame for forge welding so that you dont get oxidation.My channel has a video on how to make such burner ,its simplification of burner built by Michael Porter from book Gas Burners for Forges, Furnaces and Kilns(2004). Borax will help as a flux but i prefer boric acid with 30% borax added to it. You mix it in solution of 96%ethanol alcohol (40(acid):60 ratio -anything above 70 %proof will work),brush it on part you want and burn it with lighter. It will leave fine protective coat,you can repeat process several times or you can as well dip the part in if container is large enough.It burns with cool green flame which is always nice to look :)

Those are really good looking hinges Johm, I think I was in school the last time I made a pair of hinges, Ive been recycling gate hinges for years and not needed to make any but I have the itch to try my hand again so my next door might just get some custom made hinges. Very similar to the ones the club made for the buildings for Burton Century Village, un fortunately I don't have any real good photo's of them ours however were made on a jig that was donated by a club member and the object was to create a pair of hinges from the blank set, depending where they were to be used dictated the style 1840's buildings got "traditional" hinges where as the club buildings got the "creative" ones. Excellent video John, trust me if smiths back in the 1800's had our technology today in the shop I'm sure they would have used it...

Hey John, i just discovered the old type of automatic candle snuffers, i was watching the youtube channel "Grand Illusions" his video is titled tims candle snuffers, reason i'm mentioning it there are a couple of very simple spring or wighted designs that could be an interesting addition next time you make a candle holder untill now i never even knew there were automatic candle snuffers from many years ago

Very nice set of hinges I’m a knife maker, but I always watch what you do and it is convincing me otherwise. I do have a question about borax I have a heck of a time getting it to stick I heat it just like the stuff I by from Texas knife supply but it’s a hit and miss on getting it to stick what is the secret with that stuff? Thanks in advance good day
Thats just the nature of borax. Hold the work still for a few seconds after applying the flux so it can soak int the joint. Anything that falls off at that point was probably just excess anyway.
How strong are hinges like this? Would they be able to hold up a wooden gate like the kind you'd commonly have in a normal wooden fence? Not like a car-sized gate, but just a regular gate that a person would open and walk through. I need to rebuild the last section of fence in my front yard and it has a gate, so it would be cool to have some nice forged hinges for it.

Nice too see you using all hand tools ... It's nice too see every so often... Their was a person in the late 80's early 90's that would make stuff out of skid wood & made a cool coffee table . How ever it seemed like every tool he used was about $500.00 ... He did great work & was good for the tool company that sponsor him .. but if you did the math it was $5,000 dollars to make a skid wood coffee table... The Yankee work shop he made nice stuff .. my father & I would sketch out what he was making and adjust for our use ... It's funny when my mother would want us to do something my father didn't like he would tell her he needed this tool to do it & that he couldn't get it .. she spent to much money ... He was a smart butt he was
It is welding flux. I am using iron Mountain Flux. But any blacksmithing supplier should have something that will work. The flux helps prevent oxidation in the fire

When you buy hacksaw blades for use on metal, do you use regular, long lasting, or heavy duty long lasting? Each comes with a different price tag and I’m wondering if the higher tag is worth it

In this size they would be good for cabinet or chest hinges. For a gate I would size them up to perhaps 1/4 x 1 1/2" material with a 3/8" pin

Where does the fux go during the forge weld? Does it result in an inclusion within the weld?
when done properly the flux is forced out of the weld joint carrying scale and other impurities with it leaving a clean joint as the weld is done
I'm trying to clean up a post vice and have a lot of slack in the screw.what could be done to help take it up

Yes, but it depends on the forge. I prefer the gas forge for larger welds such as axes.
Like for the fact that when cutting with a chisel-hack, they put a steel plate. :)
