Blacksmithing - Forging a Hammer Drift (for factory made handles)

- In this video I make a hammer drift that is used to drift the eye when you forge a hammer. It's just a tapered oval shape, and you can use any dimension you like, but I make this one to fit two sizes of factory made handles. It involves a lot of grinding to get it right, but in the end it fits like a glove!

Nice clean work as always. It's always good to see a new video and I loved the shoes as a goal.
Thanks John!
The shoes are a perfect goal… but not for the owner, that puts them on after the match😂
@@torbjornahman Please, let me know, what's the brand of that ear-protector and its parameters details. Thanks in advance! Have a harmonious day!
When do all of us start the go fund me or something to get you two together on a project. Both of you have and are a big influence on smiths like myself it would be brutal to see you both work together. And it has been brutal to see torbjörn and nils ögren working together. Thanks all of you for helping me become a better smithy godbless you both and good health.
Very nice precision drift. Thank you for sharing your skill and process. Wonderful job.
Every time I see you and your family I think Sweden must be one of the most relaxed countries of the world. Nice video by the way.
Welcome to the Nordics
The quality of your work never ceases to amaze me!
That hammer eye drift is a perfectly functional piece of art! I miss those nights growing up in Alaska skating on the lakes after shoveling for hours! Made playing hockey more rewarding
It's always a pleasure watching you work, it just flows so nicely. I also can't believe the lindseed oil is almost finished, I started watching this channel and it was a bit more than half full :)
😊
I don’t remember who said this but the most important work you can do is within the walls of your own home. When you were playing with the kids reminded me, I had to say something good about it.
Thank you Sir for this video
this is something I am going to have to think about making soon..I usually make all my own handles from scratch but Ash is becoming very difficult to get hold of here (since ash die back killed most trees) and Hickory doesn't appear to grow here so I am stumped for growing my own handle wood....So shop bought handles may be the way forward
THanks for sharing Torbjorn your attention to detail and ability to make beautiful and practical tools is always a pleasure to watch.
Thanks! It can be good to have the option at least to use a factory made one.
Ash " die back "? In the States we have the " Emerald Ash Borer....that's killing all our Ash trees.
@@alisciamarotta3888 ash die back is a fungal disease first found in the UK in 2012
Always so good to watch you work. The sights & sounds, the thoughtfulness, the skills.
Food for the soul in these times. Thank you Torbjörn.
Always enjoy your videos. Leaving this comment to enhance your TH-cam algorithms. Hope it helps.
Wieder mal eine Perfekte Schmiede und Schleif Arbeit vom Fachmann, der Präzision Ablauf bewundere ich immer wieder ,sehr gute Arbeit
Ah yes.. the germans

It might be a Monty Python reference ...but I can be wrong.
This was great! I really enjoyed seeing this drift made. Looks like it came out perfect and will be very useful to you. Great job!
Beautiful work as always, thank you for taking the time to share this!
I love your work. Skills and talent in one person. And hard work to gain the skills !
Thunder Bear is back!!! Great tool.
Real wholesome video. And then making 'two' perfect tools. Thumbs up!
the tools you make to help you make other tools are beautiful - top work as always and a joy to watch , thank you
Another precision piece! Amazing work.
nicely done. It is always a pleasure to see new videos as they come out from you.
Great piece of workmanship.

Thanks for the awesome content and all the amazing videos!
Outstanding gentleman, just to have a chance to sit back and watch his work-so-relaxing work.
Always a Big Thanks :) I enjoy blacksmithing
Many thanks!
Thanks for your work!
I'm always amazed how delicately you can operate those power hammers. Thanks for another great video Torbjörn.
Clean work, fit looks nice!
Excelent bro!!
Masterpiecful job as always! Thanks for the treat!
It's a very nice video, congratulations. It was especially nice to have ice hockey in between. Hope to be able to watch your videos more often, have a good day.
Very cool, good to see your skills again Tor. I find it very rewarding to make tools, and more rewarding to use a tool you made yourself - if it's good quality like these of course! Thank you, all the best to you and the family.
If I could, I would give you two "Thumbs up." Always a pleasure to watch your work.
Excelente vídeo, muchas gracias!.
Brilliant as usual fascinating to watch you work and bring things to life with your imagination and skills, thanks.
Thanks for a very educational video once again! 👍
As always, fantastic. Cheers.
Very nice work, as always.
Amazing as always!
Such precision.
as a newer "smith" I'm sure it is not that easy, but @torbjornahman makes it looks so easy even a novice can can do it. Great job.
Jak zawsze perfekcyjnie wykonane... pozdrawiam 👍🇵🇱
Those grinding skills are underrated! Very nice!
Another job well done!!
Again, Sir, you are always The Master and I'm so lucky to get your videos.
Specil thanks for showing me what steel is your choice.
BIG THANKS
Buenísimo total!!!
İmpeccable workmanship...
For a second there, I saw "Hammer Drift" and I got excited thinking you might do a smithing flex vid and reach for something crazy tough like S7. Vids like those are always fun.
... But then I saw 4340 and my testosterone levels dropped back down to moderately elevated. 😉👍
j/k. +1 as always. 😊
*Gosh 2024 is gonna be a great year, just seeing you making videos, of what you make. 🙂 All the best to you & your family in 2024 & beyond 🙂nz*
Awesome work!
In Québec it has been one of the warmest winters yet, and it’s never been cold enough, long enough for outdoor hockey. 😢
😢
I told you you don't make tools . They are works of art and useful. 👍
Very nice grinding skills 😲
Brilliant video 👏
Brilliant!
Hey man, honestly this is wild ive been watching you through your humble beginnings and you are what sparked a light of interest in me I love what you do, and admire how well you are able to forge! Thank you so much. Have an amazing day
That's great to hear! Thanks
Muy buen trabajo, lo felicito y le mando gran saludo desde Argentina.
Very nice! I your videos are so well done. Very entertaining. I have made many long drifts/punches out of air hammer bits. They work well. However, years ago I moved to a process where the power hammer did all the work. This required various dedicated bolsters and assorted tooling. One must match handles to the drift. You show this well! I shifted to a short drift 4” to 5” made from H13. I have taken a hammer vacation lately. But your video has given me the itch!
Thank you! Yes, it requires various tools for sure.
Apex NC! Not an hour drive from our estate. Great video.
Cool, thanks
Seu profundo domínio da técnica é cativante .
Härligt att se er ute på isen! Tack för en verkligen fint gjord video. 👍👌🇸🇪
Tack igen!
When that boiled linseed oil is finally finished, there will need to be some kind of festivity before a new one is bought. A viking funeral for the empty bottle, perhaps.
Ahahaaa a bandy stick to play ice hockey. Awesome!
:) Good size for her...
Thanks for the video.
Vi hade ingen sjö, men farfar brukade spola vatten på ladugårdsgrunden, när det var riktigt kallt ute. Sedan skottade han upp en skridskobana åt oss. Det var tider det!
Kul!
Lovely tool😍🔥🔥your mimic after you saw your linseed oil goes to an end was great!😂😂thanks for sharing🙏
A gente nem sabe o que TA fará, mas só de ver o capricho com que ele inicia seus trabalhos já é cativante. Parabéns!
Beautiful drift, man!
I was going to do this last week then I decided to change suppliers. Eventually I want to redrift all my frequently used stuff so I can just drop a new handle in them.
I put off rehandling my favorite hammer for waaaay too long because I didn't want to take the time to fit a handle.
Thanks! Cool, good luck!
Gracias!!
Excellent...
Well done 👍 even the forging.😉
nice work😀👍👍
That is a nice useful tool and like others I loved the shoe goal 😁
Such Precision Torbjorn!!! Beautiful drift overall and should work for a lot of factory handles. Thanks for the video treat with hockey ;-).
Thanks 👍
Дякую за чудове відео. Як завжди цікаво за вами спостерігати. Успіхів Вам. Бажаю Вам і Вашій родині здоров'я.
Very skilfully done, it’s a pleasure to watch you work . I’ve been trying to work out how long I’ve been watching your videos for, it must be some years now, when I first started watching that container of linseed oil was at least half full. Here in Aus we use “spotted gum” timber for handles, does the job but not as good as hickory in my opinion. Spotted gum tends to dry out and create splinters, which is not good for hammer handles. Regards from Down Under.
Thanks. ok! Spotted gum sounds really cool though... like a dalmatiner rubber handle, sort of, ha ha....
@@torbjornahman If it wasn’t for your restrictive Swedish import laws I’d send you over a piece of spotted gum to experiment with. Spotted gum is part of the eucalyptus family of trees, it’s widely used for a number of purposes, one of which is handles. Enjoyed watching you all having fun on the ice skates, never tried that, looks great 👍
Tack Torbjörn! Lika vackert som vanligt :)
Nice tool,very well indeed
Torbjorn has honored the Lord’s gift by how he has used it. So many times this doesn’t happen but it didn’t happen here. Beautiful work Mr. Ahman. ❤️. JC🌵
Beautiful Hammer! Hultafors 2.0!
very good~~

Parabéns pelos trabalhos maravilhosos e pelo canal também. Muita saúde e paz para você e família. Brasil.
Dear Torbjörn Áhman!
I really like looking at your work, but I also like when you show your garden or the landscape where you live.
Best regards, István. (With Google translate)
You plan so perfectly but I'd imagine to run into some errors and your quick to correct them very fine piece you made great craftsmanship
Blacksmithing is all about correcting your latest mistake! :) :)
Mycket snyggt !🥰
The level of precision it takes to forge to such a tight tolerance beautiful to watch but the hand grinding is insane how perfect it turned out
Thanks! Surprised it went so well actually. It really doesn't need to be that perfect to still work ok.
@@torbjornahman I have 2 hammer drifts I made 3 years ago that were made with a hammer/anvil and an angle grinder. I still use them today but I wish they were more precise for the same reason yours is perfect
Gut perfekto👍👍👍🇰🇬🇰🇬
Керемет және шеберлік!!! Келесі туындыңызды асыға күтеміз! Рахмет
It would be great to see you fit those handles.
At first I thought you wanted to forge the wooden handles. But I was wrong :)
Great project and great video! On a sidenote about the sticker that came from Apex, NC. That's just an hour or two up the road from me.
Thanks! Very cool!
Классная работа сразу видна рука мастера
"Pull my skate blades" Your kids ever ask you to do that? It works great to relieve foot fatigue and it feels great too.
