    You'll get the "go hear the live version" recommendation a lot, and for good reason. It is incredible. However, I'll say this: it has been a very long time since I've heard the studio version -- it was almost like hearing a new song, and I enjoyed it. Thanks!

    Oh man you have to hear the live 1970 version of this song. This is the roots of heavy metal right here. Sabbath, zeppelin and purple are called the unholy trinity. A rare band where every member is amazing.

    Instead of a church, picture a soldier in the jungle, tired, soaking wet and blinded by the heavy vegetation just firing into the charging NVA soldiers he cannot see with them firing back at him. In the live version he commits suicide. Powerful.

      Even though the recording quality of the vocal is better on the live version, the guitar solo on this studio version, which has got to be one of the greatest electric guitar solo's in the history of recorded music, is better than the live version.

    Gracias, gracias!!!

      To keep with this theme, are you familiar with Rainbow? Ritchie Blackmore left DP in 1975 to form Rainbow with Ronnie James Dio on vocals. "Stargazer" is a must listen if you haven't heard it. You might know them from the 80s when they were more top 40, but the Dio years are on another level, especially live. On TH-cam check out their 1977 Munich concert. It was filmed and the audio is very good. The songs "Mistreated", "Catch the Rainbow" and "16th Century Greensleeves" really stand out.

    Deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, after leaving the band in 1975, formed Rainbow, where together with Ronnie James Dio, who later replaced Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath, he recorded probably the most epic song the rock world has ever produced: Stargazer.
    On drums sat Cozy Powell, and so it happened that one of the best guitarists of all time played with one of the best drummers of all time and the best singer of all time for a short time in a band. Absolutely worth listening to, also concerning the lyrics. Dio has begun here to sing about his mystical worlds. I have already seen videos on TH-cam that deal only with the interpretation of this song...

    All musicians in this band are iconic: Ian Paice, drummer; Jon Lord, keyboards; Ritchie Blackmore, lead guitar. I’m spacing on the bassist. Top tier, all of them. Blackmore doesn’t get the creds that he should. One of the best, but not as well known as many others.

  • @stevedahlberg8680
    @stevedahlberg8680 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    If you want to hear them really blaze, check out the song Highway Star from their iconic Machine Head album. It's a few years later than this I think. And in fact, any song on that album is pretty amazing.
    But what's interesting about Sweet Child In Time and you saying that it reminded you maybe of a movie, is that they used it in the third episode of the new Netflix German television show, 1899. It's the same husband and wife team that did Dark a few years ago. Dark was probably the best thing I've ever observed on television I just can't believe it. And so everybody was waiting so anxiously for their next work and it was dropped I don't know a month or so ago. Anyway they use it at the end of the third episode. This song.
    I will always love everything about this band. But it is always a treat to hear Jon Lord on the organ. He plays other keyboards sometimes but that's his main gig is playing a Hammond organ through a Marshall stack so it's loud and distorted and he often does unison stuff with either the bass guitar or the lead guitar. Except when he's soloing. And so he is technically part of the rythym section most of the time.
    And I'm glad you pointed that out about the rhythm section, to me that's the first thing I listen to. If you can get that in your head as the foundation, everything else just pops even harder. Partly that's because I have played both bass and drums, although I'm primarily a guitar player keyboard player trumpet player and singer.
    Ian has a great rock and roll voice. He is incredible. And what he was doing there with that scream singing is truly astounding. There wasn't really anything like it at the time although it wasn't many years later until people were attempting to replicate that in the emerging heavy metal scene. And it's still a staple of that kind of singing today. Also, he notably sang the role of Jesus Christ in the Broadway play Jesus Christ Superstar before it was made into a movie. I think in the early 70s. It's on the soundtrack for the Broadway play.

Without DP there'd be no Metallica, no Black Sabbath, no Alice in Chains, no Tool. Four amazing musicians - Jon Lord's keyboards in particular are always fantastic. Dam it took me into my 20's to get PF I'm 60 now & still can't get this 1. That's OK I recognize great musicianship when I hear it. DP always has kicked ass & always will. RB is top 10 guitarist for sure.

    The live version in 1970 approx on live FRENCH TV - is not only better, but a testament to live talent. Would strongly, strongly recommend to watch and review the live Paris tv version - one of the best live performances ever on tv and stage. It will blow any critics mind - as to the testament of Gillians voice;

    I see a lot preferring the live version from 1970, and I understand that since it's is both audio and video. But there's no comparison to the lice version on Made In Japan. That's the best version, but unfortunately only audio.

    THERE'S A SCHOOL OF THOUGHT THAT BELIEVES THAT THIS SONG COULD POSSIBLY HAVE BEEN THE REASON WHY IAN GILLIAN LEFT DEEP PURPLE!! LONG STORY SHORT RITCHIE BLACKMORE WOULD AMBUSH HIM BY GOING INTO THIS SONG AFTER IAN HAD INSISTED THEY NOT DO IT ON CONSECUTIVE NIGHTS DURING LIVE TOURS!! AS YOU CAN IMAGINE THE STRAIN ON THE VOCAL CORDS NIGHT AFTER NIGHT GETTING UP TO THAT HIGH NOTE COULD BE DEVASTATING!! BLACKMORE DID THAT ONCE TOO MANY TIMES!!

    • @larteonceagain
      @larteonceagain 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's a great song but I find it frustrating that there's no ultimate version of it.
    I mean, this is the studio version and it's great and all, but Gillian's vocals are MUCH more powerful live. Here, they're double tracked and sound softer, but live,
    he's screaming with POWER. On the other hand, the instrumental section is better than any live version, in my opinion.
    And to make matters even more annoying, the end section is much better on the studio version. Live, it often sounded a bit silly.
    So yeah, I guess the ultimate version for me would be one of the live versions from Japan for the verses and the screaming, and then the studio version
    for the instrumental section plus the ending.

    The band let loose live, remove the studio shackles..... even the screams are louder and richer.
    Beware those who will advise The Made in Japan version live.
    The 1970 live version made by Granada tv for the BBC is the best rock performance ever.......as good as 1994 Pink Floyd “ Pulse” ( PF are not really Rock-lol ).
    As good as Farnham with the MSO......again, Farnham is not rock either, just musical genius.

    • @bookhouseboy280

      That tv version is only popular because it's a video. It's very good, yes, but inferior to the nearly 20 minute version from Stockholm 1970. Blackmore is in better form and Lord solos too.
