Not gonna lie I was waiting for the comments on the audience 😂
As others have said they were warned beforehand lol but yeah they was namely even an acknowledgement they were playing at all lol.
Tbh if I was in the band I wudda been tempted to go into audience to check for pulses 😂
On the music front this personifies a band I'm total synch with each other in every way, just such amazing song writting, vocals and musicianship that really stands the test of time.
Never get tired of this song, and lyrically so poignant at the time in regards to the Vietnam War.

The audience's reaction is mostly because they were told to behave because it was on a live TV show.

The audience was too close to the band. If they were dancing or moving a lot, you wouldn't be able to tell who the band members are. Furthermore, the song has abrupt ups and downs that they wouldn't know about, anyway. There would be chaos. So, they were told to be completely still, and that is an effect, too, mind you.

Ian is a gentleman indeed, as well as Jon, Roger, and little Ian, which is what called him when they played in the 70s. I worked for them on their first website and online store from 1996-2004 and was fortunate to get to know 4/5 of my childhood heroes plus an awesome individual named Steve Morse who is a true master of his instrument and injected new life into the others who had been stifled by Ritchie all those years. Their new player, Steve McBride plays more like Ritchie than Steve so get out and them while you still can.

"Be civil and respectful" says your ad for the policy of channel.
I think you're not. Laughing intensely about the audience during your reaction because you ignore the audience was specially requested to stay quiet during the performance to obtain the incredible quality sound of this song.
You have to check the entire "DOING THEIR THING" DEEP PURPLE VIDEO to notice that during the whole presentation the audience was perfectly quiet and in silence.
The video and of course its sound, is one of the best legacy of that era for a Deep Purple presentation.
Maybe I can understand you found it funny, but you exagerated laughing constantly and putting more attention to the audience than the extraordinary music and sound quality from this video.
I've seen many reactions to this video and yours is very much dissapointed because of your permanent laughing on the audience.
    Sorry.

Oh, we had the best music in the 70s! It's awesome to see a younger generation react to it! I raised my kids on it. As a matter of fact, my 32 year old son took me to see Deep Purple in concert with Edgar Winter and Alice Cooper in 2017 for my 62nd birthday! He loved it!

Worst. Audience. Ever. I guess barbiturates must have been compulsory for TV show attendees in 1970 . 🤣 I've never been much into Deep Purple - I actually prefer some of their offshoots, like Gillan & Glover - but this song always knocks my socks off, and tops the best songs of other bands I like much more. I could listen to it over and over. Thanks other John!

The showrunners asked (warned/told/threatened) the audience to remain still until the song's conclusion. The band was being recorded live for a TV appearance, and there was concern that any noise/movement from the audience would be picked during the recording and ruin the recording, thus requiring another take.
While the audience is an easy target for mockery, they were simply helping the production team as best they could.

The audience behavior in this video has nothing to do with "in those days", I'm sure you've been informed a dozen times by now why they didn't react (thankfully for the quality of this recording)...
Concert crowds "in those days" were plenty enthusiastic in normal circumstances.

this was recorded at the ROYAL ALBERT HALL, so i'm sure the audience was coached beforehand not to dishonor the Queen by dancing around and stuff during the performance. however, when Deep Purple and the London Symphony performed "Concerto for Group and Orchestra" around the same time (again in the Royal Albert Hall), there are people in the audience dancing, etc... i think Deep Purple recorded Child in Time and Wring that Neck at the Royal Albert Hall as a sound check for the concerto, and these songs were also somewhat of a dress rehearsal for the camera crew as well, but this is just a guess.
