    Don't own one, but would be an awesome NE woods cartridge. Yup, frontal diameter makes a difference to me anyway. Big slower moving bullets do work.

    Be neat to have one, I like the 35 Whelen too. Don't see them much. Even 338 Fed is hard to find. I know Ruger and maybe Savage did some limited runs, aimed at Michigan/northern hunters as exclusives.

    I've also wondered why the 25 and 27 were never a thing on the 308 case. There was the 25 souper which essentially duplicates the Roberts. The 27-08 with 130s would be an awesome deer cartridge but at this point is redundant. Not that it stops manufacturers in the least....

    I strongly agree with your question at the end of the video about the lack of a.270-308. Technically the 277 Sig Furry is exactly that. Kind of. Sort of. In a very limited supply of options. There’s a few different wildcats out there that are similar. Really wish there was a universally adopted version of that cartridge available. Factory rifles, ammo, dies , brass etc…..same goes for 257 cal version of the.308. The 25 Souper is super cool! Wish there was a 25-08 Rem or 257 Win readily available. I digress… niche wishes are stuck to custom projects by good gunsmiths.

    I was looking into having JES reboring make my tikka 308 barrel into 358 win. I recently started reloading the 35 Whelen and got interested in the 35 calibers

      I got really close to having a 358 Norma Magnum built. The ballistics on that are off the charts.

    I saw Barnes makes the TSX and TTSX in .358. Wonder if the velocities are good enough for an all copper bullet.

    • @huntsimple9527
      @huntsimple9527  9 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      I would be skeptical of Barnes in the 358. I think the 358 is best with just good old fashioned cup and core bullets.

    Pretty cool bigger bore cartridge for those who hunt 350 yards and in. I was looking for bullets for the 360 Buckhammer lever action rifle that I got for my birthday/Christmas present (only 3 days apart) and saw some more pointed options that wouldn’t work for my 360 BH, but would work splendidly in the 358 Winchester and the 35 Whelen.
    I actually want to build a left hand 35 Whelen as another big woods thumper. Mostly only see single shot CVAs and Traditions rifles in that cartridge

    • @huntsimple9527
      @huntsimple9527  9 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      That is all cool stuff. I agree, the 358 is a 300 yard cartridge or so. I am getting fired up to drag my old Ruger back out and work on some loads. Maybe after Project Little 7 we spend some time with the 358.

    • @TheWVgoodguy22
      @TheWVgoodguy22 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ thanks and yes that is awesome and something outside of the normal cartridge realm. Bigger bore cartridges are cool 😎 in their own right. Yes that would be a fun project to do after Little 7. I know that some folks are looking for the revival of Project 270, but it can wait and it would be cool to switch it up from cartridges with similar bullet weights.

    Awesome rifle!! I picked up a Ruger Hawkeye African in 9.3X62mm back in 2011/2012 and it’s a great rifle. I’ll never part with it. 9.3X62mm is a highly underrated cartridge IMHO.

    Don't own one, sounds like a neat woods round. the 360 buck hammer has my attention just because, big slow and nostalgia of the lever gun . But definitely have to keep my eyes open for a used 358

    I wonder if Jim Carmichael didn't do something along the lines of a 270-308.
    TAC is probably your best bet. Alliant Power-Pro 2000 MR might prove very useful. Speer #15 lists it in 35 Whelen w/250s getting 2500fps with the STARTING charge.
    I've had a bag of Starline 358 Win brass on my gunshow tables for maybe 3 years now. It has proven hard to move.
    Thanks for the vid!

      I am sure with all the rage being PRC, velocity, ultra high BC, and long range shooting the 358 Win is a dinosaur for sure. For the way I hunt, there might not be a better choice!

    Just skip the 338 federal and go long action to a 35 Whelen or 338 win mag. If the 338-06 could be had without a custom gunsmith that would be a great option.

    • @huntsimple9527
      @huntsimple9527  8 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I ran 338 Win Mag for years and it was great. They tend to be bigger/heavier rifles, which as I get older I am not as much a fan of. I am also getting to the point where I like less recoil!

    I was looking at a nice second hand rifle in this chambering but brass just doesn't exist for it so I'm going with whelen instead and what's your opinion on the 8mm and cartridges like the 8mm Remington magnum and the blaser 8,5x55.

    • @huntsimple9527
      @huntsimple9527  8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think the 8mm Rem Mag is a great cartridge. I felt the same way about the 325 WSM. Winchester really screwed up on marketing the entire WSM line as did Remington on the Ultra Mag and Short Action Ultra Mag lines.

    • @Harry-l1t
      @Harry-l1t 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@huntsimple9527 yeah that's true but the 300 wsm has done well and from what I heard the 8mm has always suffered in America and the common wealth.

      @@Harry-l1t Of all the WSMs the 300 sure does seem to be the most popular. Around my area, it has faded once the PRCs came out. 80% of rifles on the shelves in my area are either 6.5 PRC or 7 PRC.....sadly.

    • @huntsimple9527

      I think so. I am not sure there are any bolt actions in production, but I do think they are still made in the BLR. Probably be a special order from Browning. It would be a cool rifle for the 358! I have a Win Model 88 in 308, and those were also chambered in 358 back in the day. I would love to have one!

    😃 No Need For Regrets...The New 338 Federal Will Be The 338 Back Country and Have More Power Than The 338 Winchester Magnum, From a 308 Case (Great Timber Elk Cartridge)! You Will Probably Be Able To Get It in a AR-15 Platform For Hog Hunting and Self Defense Too? 🤑

  • @EricChmelarsky
    @EricChmelarsky 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Winchester doomed this cartridge,
    Introduced it in model 88. Savage did also, model 99. Ammo , two choices maybe. Folks aren't interested the medium range cartridges. 338 Fed, 358 Winny, 35 Whelan, 338 Win. Mag. However, 45-70 powers on in the 1895 Marlin. Nostalgia I suppose.

    • @huntsimple9527
      @huntsimple9527  7 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I think when this cartridge was introduced the way people hunted was so much different than today. Lever actions probably made sense to a greater degree. The way I grew up hunting in NW Montana for whitetails our average shot was easily under 100 yards. But I agree, today nobody cares about these medium range cartridges. Very little interest in them. I do think with the right loads the 338 Win Mag can be quite the cartridge and I ran it for a few years and loved it. Ran everything from 160s to 300s and it was super fun.

    • @EricChmelarsky

      @huntsimple9527 My favorite cartridge is the 338 Win. Mag. Bought one new, at 16 years old. Wouldn't feel underguned anywhere except Africa. I haven't a need/want for 300+shooting. I managed to get a 338 Federal ,Savage 110 Hoghunter before discontinued. Rechambered a model 7600, 35 Rem to 358 Winny. I believe that to be the perfect woods combo.
