7mm-08 Rem vs 308 Win. Is one dominant?
Now that we have some real world data on the 7mm-08, we compare it to data on the 308 to see if one is dominant over the other.

About 3 weeks ago I shot this video, and just hadn't posted it yet. Not sure when I will keep working on the 300 PRC, but wanted to share what we have so far. Looking forward to it. I like learning new cartridges.
Project Little 7 Episode 10. Are we done with 160s? It is up to you guys....
มุมมอง 1.2K8 วันที่ผ่านมา
We worked to prove out the 160 Ballistic Tip load. We are exceeding one goal (velocity) but 0.05" short of meeting our accuracy goal. Should I keep going with 160s or move to 140s?

มุมมอง 1.1K12 วันที่ผ่านมา
With the success of the 175s behind us, we need to get a 160 to fly true! A change of powder (old school powder!) and different bullet brand might have just done it!

Project Little 7 Episode 1
มุมมอง 930หลายเดือนก่อน
Well let's officially kick off Project Little 7 (7mm-08)! We plan to take this in 3 chunks - heavy, medium, and light. I think it will be fun and I am looking forward to learning a new cartridge!
139 grain interlock btsp for 7mm-08 is devastating for whitetail
I’ll be testing those!
@huntsimple9527 and they pretty darn accurate. My 13 year old shot a bobcat at 180 yards last weekend with those
What would be the difference between 1.10 and the 1.11 in the 308 win would the 1.11 be more accurate.
I think twist rate is tied more to the ability of the rifle to potentially stabilize certain bullet weights. Generally, the 1:10 will be better at stabilizing the heavier bullet making them potentially more accurate. But, it is so rifle specific. I do think a 1:10 twist is ideal for the 308 generally speaking. Twist rate is tied to accuracy in terms of bullet weights, but not necessarily the accuracy of the rifle over all. Hope that helped out! Thanks for watching!
@huntsimple9527 thank you for your reply and makes sense I look forward to more content.
I thought about rebarreling my 30-06 to 280ai like all the cool kids, but when you look at the data on paper the difference is so small it doesn’t really make sense unless you need a new barrel anyways. The difference is a little bigger than 7-08 to 308 based on your findings but IIRC it only amounted to a few inches of drift and drop at 500 yards and a negligible amount of velocity/energy difference at distance.
Agreed. I have found that without a significant difference in muzzle velocity, things don't change much given similar bullet weights and diameters.
Great video! I like both, the 7mm-08 is like the 308 to you. You’re familiar with it and have used it extensively. It’s been my go to for a little over 25 years!!
Don't be late on the first day of your new job! Thanks for the vid!
I made it to work on time! Had a great first day. At this point in my career, I am hopeful that I found my final career scenario!
@huntsimple9527 even if you retire from this new job some day, you will then become a full-time you tuber. Or a pastor. 😃
Great comparison, the 7mm08 and the 308 are almost ballistic twins. What is your Varget load that gets you to 2700+ muzzle velocity? I hope you don't mind me asking. May you be Greatly Blessed in your new job!
Thank you! I am optimistic my career change will be great for me and my family! I do feel blessed and free! I am always hesitant to share charges on loads......I am using "around" 45 grains of Varget with the 165s. Depending on the bullet I get from 2740 to 2760 with this charge of Varget. In the rifles I have tested it in, I have not had pressure issues but I can tell it is on the upper end of the range of what I would pursue.
@@huntsimple9527thank you! I realise that 45gr of varget would take me close to the "danger zone". According to Quick Load, I would only attain a velocity just below 2600 fps using varget in my 22" barrel, using 165gr Sierra Game King bullets, at max. I can't remember the exact load, but will go and ckeck it tonight. Keep safe!
Best of luck with the new job!
Thank you!
Interesting comparison. I personally think it would be a little fairer if you compared the 140 grain Nosler BT in the 7mm-08 to the 165 grain Nosler BT in the 308. Both have about the same BC and same sectional density. The 160 7mm is actually comparable to the 180 in the 308. When you compare recoils with these you will notice a difference between the two calibers. You will also see a difference in ballistics. I am surprised the 160 grain in 7mm-08 was so close to the 165 in the 308 because the 308 has a bigger surface area at the base and should have been able to get more velocity even if it was 5 grains heavier. I can't wait to see what you get with the lighter bullets in 7mm-08. That's where you start getting enough velocity for the monolithic bullets to perform adequately at longer ranges. I personally feel that with modern bullets, there isn't much difference between the two except availability. Nothing beats the 308 but I still prefer the 7mm-08.
Thats how i feel, 160 in the 7 seems a bit heavy for the case, except in a long barrel maybe
Interesting and cool comparative analysis 🧐. I don’t have either one, but might eventually pick up a left hand 308 since the ammo is the least expensive outside of maybe 223 and 22 LR, tons of ammo available and has great sub 400 yard performance. Plus reloading components are quite available and it would be fun to reload. Congrats on your new job too by the way
Thank you! Agreed, the 308 gives more ammo and component availability and generally a bit cheaper too.
@ you are welcome 🙏 and yes indeed it is. I will find the right rifle for the cartridge in left hand eventually
Really good side by side data. Wind drift is likely better in the 7-08, but the drop numbers are amazing. I personally like 150 class bullets in the 308, and I'm looking forward to seeing the data when you shoot that weight in the 7-08. Good luck with the new job.
Thank you! New job I think is going to be great! Agreed, the better BC of the 7mm diameter would be better in a cross wind.
Do you still have your kimber 308? I've been looking for one since you did a video on yours and i havent come across one! What a sweet mountain rifle that is!
It was a sweet mountain rifle! I sold it about 2 years ago! There is some regret because that rifle was 1/2" with a specific 150 grain load.
OMG...didn't think you'd sell that one! Especially cuz it was in 308. That is the exact rifle I'm looking for but haven't come across one over the last 4 years! Not sure how many kimber is still making. Atleast they haven't been available in the northeast
Missed your live, hopefully many more to come
Great stuff. Many thanks. Good data. Congratulations on the new job. Enjoy. Stay safe out there.
130 gr TTSX from .308 Win is a thing of beauty. I get 3150 fps from my 22” Tikka.
I’m sold with ttsx 130 in 308. Ramshot TAC.
Hopeful ballistics is getting over 3300 fps (and under 1/2 MOA) with his. It's honestly making me consider a 308 instead of the 7mm-08 or 280 ackley I had planned
The 130 ttsx with varget getting 3150fps .750 moa all day.
Yep. I get close to 3200 with a 125 Accubond in my 22” 308. In the early 90s I ran 125 Ballistic Tips in my 308 and they were not a great match for the velocity (in terms of on game performance) so I was excited when the Accubond came out. I’m getting big hole groups in my Tikka T3 with the 125.
@@huntsimple9527 nice. I put up a picture on my community tab with my wrap-up on my Tikka.
I have both. I bought a 308 during COVID because I couldn't get any ammo for my 7mm08. I really haven't gone back to the 7mm08. If i were a reloader maybe things would be different.
308 is hard to beat for ammo availability for sure!
You really need a copper comparison.
I have never run copper in the 308. I don't feel the muzzle velocities it generates are a great fit for the solid copper bullets. Maybe in the 150 class, but I would not use them in the heavier bullets. I am going to run some copper in the Project Little 7 which should be fun. Hopefully this spring we can do some expansion testing too.
Two very underrated cartridges. Excited to see this comparison
308 win underrated?
In today's market, yes.
Close ballistics, however the 308 Winchester has more bullet options by manufacturers. It is more available on the retailer shelves. It has never failed me…….
I think you will like the video!
I’ve got two SWFA 6x Milquad scopes and a Swfa 3-9. I really like the 6x for hunting. I was skeptical as I’ve always had variable. It seems the trend is to add more magnification these days rather than a simple and reliable system. I look forward to the gen 2 swfa 6x in the next few months
I love fixed power. I have lots of variables too, but the simplicity of fixed is great. As I said in this video, for newer shooters, the sight picture being the same every single time on a fixed scope can be very helpful. I ran a straight 6 this fall on my elk rifle and a 250 yard shot on an elk with 6X was a cake walk.
I was pretty impressed with the 165 CX this year. Might be a good light bullet option. I posted a video reviewing it about a week ago. I think I tagged you. Anyways, check it out if you don’t mind and have a couple minutes. I was very impressed. Look forward to the rest of these projects.
Thanks for sharing this! I will look at the CX for sure. Whatever weight I go with (165, 168, 180) I am for sure going to be looking at a bonded or solid copper bullet. Accubond, Barnes, etc. I am looking forward to learning about the PRC more!
Seems these prc cartridges are just way easier to get to shoot than some older cartridges. I would never argue against the effectiveness of an older classic but this is just what i notice. I have a 6.5 prc and seems like just about everyone has a different load that works great for them
As you know, I am old school, but I am also a realist. I agree. The design of these cartridges provides more opportunity for repeatability. It is just that simple. I am looking forward to learning more about the PRC!
SWFA Make 6 Power Heavy Build Scope Thank YOU SIR
Thanks for sharing that!
Nice rifle, you make a good choice. Really nice results which likely will improve as the barrel settles in. Are you going to clean before the next range session?
Thank you. I am hopeful for this rifle so far! Yes, I have already cleaned it. Normally I clean a new rifle after the first two or maybe three range sessions, then I will run it for maybe 50-75 rounds with out cleaning.
I agree with that strategy. Looking forward to seeing results.
Very encouraging start! My reloading process is very similar to yours with the exception that I use a neck tension mandrel to achieve consistent seating tension. Great to hunt/load/shoot with your son!
Thank you!
Shot my new Bergara Sierra Wilderness today ust like yours but in 7PRC. I took a scope off another rifle (one pic rail to another) but forgot I put a 20 MOA rail on the Bergara. I forgot my tools so couldn't adjust it and didn't even hit paper at 50 so I stopped. I did go ahead and clock the factory Hornady ELDX ammo and it was in the 2700s. Felt like shooting a BB gun with that brake on it.
How much is your 300 PRC total weight with scope? Nine, ten pounds?
I had never weight it, so I just did. 8 lbs and 15 oz. If I were going to hunt with it, I could shave off several ounces with a different scope and mount system if needed. The overall feel and balance is pretty nice as it is set up.
Why not a 300 win lot cheaper
I love 300 Win Mag! I have had several over the years. Just wanted something different to play with and learn. I did look at a few 300 WMs and did a little research and at least right now, brass for the 300 Win is sort of in short supply and 300 PRC is prevalent - another factor in my selection.
Pretty good shooting and I like the idea of running this congruent with the Little 7. I have wanted the Bergara B14 Sierra Wilderness in a left hand model chambered in 7 PRC since it was announced at Shot Show last year.
Kinda unrelated comment. If you got your hands on h1000 I'd like to see what you can get with the 270 with that. My x-bolt seems to like it with a pretty full case and speer 150s. Don't remember off hand what charge I worked up but well sub moa, and around 2850.
Magnum primers, slower burn, big charge, takes more to light.
@@dhuber4951 I have several pounds of H1000 on hand. I will for sure look into this when we get back to Project 270. Thank you.
Not a bad looking gun. Not a bad group. Now you've got me thinking. I'm still looking for a suitable rifle to put my 34mm tube Arken scope on that I've had for a few years. 😅
I am glad to know I am not the only one who has to buy a rifle because I have a scope sitting around! LOL!
I picked up a VX3i 30mm with B&C reticle some yrs back, and I kind of wish I would of went another way with my choice. I'm not remembering the zoom, but maybe a 4.5x on the low end. Almost went CDS version, and probably should of, but also was looking at just regular duplex at the time too.
I have multiple 3 vx hd 4.5 - 14 power scopes with the Boone and Crocket Reticle. Sight in at 200 yards, go out to 400 yards set power setting ring where the rifle throws the bullet to 400 yard bullseye, mark it and you are good to go out to 500 yards. No dialing, I have found on some of my CDS scopes my 1st shot after dialing is not 100 percent accurate, the tracking is not exact. Love my Boone and Crocket Reticles…..
@williamfeldner9356 Thanks for sharing that, I've not spent much time with it, and was thinking it might be better to put on a 30/7 cal magnum, than what i got it on. I dont intend on getting rid of it, or anything.
The CVA and Bergara rifles, are supposed to be pretty accurate. I was looking at the Bergara B14 hunter as a possibility to try in future.
I have seen mixed results from Bergara based on some of my friends. So far, this one and the one my son has are showing great potential.
I don’t shoot without a break. Noise, I’ve never noticed a difference with protection on. That gun is showing some promise!
I am learning to like brakes! This gun does have me optimistic!
Yea that's a shooter for sure sweet rifle and great video..
Is the 277 Furry based off a 308 case?
Not sure? I need to research that.
Be neat to have one, I like the 35 Whelen too. Don't see them much. Even 338 Fed is hard to find. I know Ruger and maybe Savage did some limited runs, aimed at Michigan/northern hunters as exclusives.
Maybe accuracy goals were not quite obtained but .8 is hard to complain about.
I agree. Here is how I am looking at it.....winter conditions, a sporter rifle that is totally stock out of the box, a 55 year old guy, an old school 9X scope.....0.8 is not too shabby.
Time to move on to 140. That's plenty good enough grouping
I feel the same way. Under the winter conditions and considering all things, I am good with 0.80 and ready to move one as well. Honestly, if I picked between the 175 and 160, I would take the 175 anyway. This particular rifle quickly was sub 0.75 MOA with 175s.
@huntsimple9527 can't go wrong with either of them. The elk wouldn't know the difference
@@jasonacosta3860 Truth!
Winchester doomed this cartridge, Introduced it in model 88. Savage did also, model 99. Ammo , two choices maybe. Folks aren't interested the medium range cartridges. 338 Fed, 358 Winny, 35 Whelan, 338 Win. Mag. However, 45-70 powers on in the 1895 Marlin. Nostalgia I suppose.
I think when this cartridge was introduced the way people hunted was so much different than today. Lever actions probably made sense to a greater degree. The way I grew up hunting in NW Montana for whitetails our average shot was easily under 100 yards. But I agree, today nobody cares about these medium range cartridges. Very little interest in them. I do think with the right loads the 338 Win Mag can be quite the cartridge and I ran it for a few years and loved it. Ran everything from 160s to 300s and it was super fun.
@huntsimple9527 My favorite cartridge is the 338 Win. Mag. Bought one new, at 16 years old. Wouldn't feel underguned anywhere except Africa. I haven't a need/want for 300+shooting. I managed to get a 338 Federal ,Savage 110 Hoghunter before discontinued. Rechambered a model 7600, 35 Rem to 358 Winny. I believe that to be the perfect woods combo.
Good job on the heavies. Now time to move on to the 140’s. I think the mid range is where this cartridge shines.
I’m watching either way run it like you want boss.
Something's wrong, your Tikka's should be shooting sub 3/4 moa for 5 shots. That's being generous. I have some that do much better than that. It's a Tikka, I'd up my standards and expectations a little, if I were you. Looks like those loads need a lot of tweaking to me.
Im excited to see the 140s i feel that the cartridge will really light up with that weight! Beautiful spot!
I get my 160 tipstrike bullets from raven rocks precision
Thank you for the info!
Being so close to the 3/4 it begs to try to close the gap. Or to prove was it you, rhe gun , or the load on that average. As a non reloader this does facinate me on what you can achieve with a little time and tinkering.
There is a good chance it is me. I have not felt great about my shots for the past 2 weeks or so. Just one of those things. In reality 0.80" for a sporter weight production rifle off kind of a crappy rest for a 55 year old guy in 25 degrees is pretty good! I have high standards, but sometimes I catch myself going "This is not too bad!"
You've had good success with a 160s and 170s load. Log it into records and move onto the 140s/150s!
That recommendation is by far the majority so far!
I would be thrilled with this if it was me. I missed the powder here you all. What is it? Is it the IMR4350? Thank you
IMR 4350. The charge is much higher than any recent manual shows. I got the charge from Speer Manual #11. I am under max, getting 2710 from a 22 barrel, and almost zero pressure signs. I am thrilled with it, and thank you. I think it is pretty easy from some guys to kind of take for granted what is happening here. I am getting 0.8" groups out of a sporter weight rifle on kind of an old crappy rest, I'm 55 years old, using a 9X scope. Like you said, I am thrilled and for my hunting style, this is lights out all that is needed.
I’m coming along for the ride no matter what direction you go! However, I did like the idea of the light, fast load in the 308 with a tougher bullet. A 140gr AB out of the 7-08 might perform similar to the 125gr AB out of your 308.
@@pbisceglie1 I am anxious to try 120 grainers from this 7-08!
Or 150gn partition see if it likes it
I hope to run some 150s for sure. I have a few.
Try a 150 gn accubond LR
Group like that can be the shooter as much as the rifle keep going
