@@canadianboi326 I don't think they were saying that either. My point was just that Beyoncé and Jay-Z are household names around the world, and watching this video was my first time seeing any of those kids. @@aj_makesmovies I think the case is that they're feeling extremely popular, but they fail to understand that TikToks and Shorts doesn't leave a lasting impact on the viewers. They believe their followers or viewers care about their lives, while it couldn't be further from the truth. They are simply a 15 second glimpse in the hours of media consumption on any given day for people. Comparing that to someone like Jay-Z, who's laid out his own story, personality, trials, victories, and advice throughout years of a successful career is insanity. And that's what this kind of fast-food fame will drive you to: insanity; a disconnect between fantasy and reality.
This is a very interesting comment, thanks! I would like to add to it as it led me to consider the following thought: Is a TikToker with millions of views for sponsored content really different from the typical actor who dreamt big, but didn't make it in the long-run? On the short career path of the actor, there might have been role in an advertisement for teeth whitening or tooth paste, that was shown to millions of people on the tv, but nothing more ever came of the career. I feel that the traceability of view numbers might result in a false perception of reality. I don't remember the names and faces of all the tooth paste advertisement actors, just as I won't remember the TikTokers I just saw in this video by the end of this week. @@mrdavidsteen

"The transitory nature of a human billboard." THANK YOU!! This is EXACTLY, almost word for word what I have said for a long time now. I love to dress up. I love to do my makeup and put on pretty clothes. I have been told by MANY people that I could be an influencer. I had someone say "There are influencers doing less." and I tell them that "I would rather die. I refuse to be a billboard." I have used the term "human billboard" for a while. I am a musician. I want to be seen as a musician. Not some mannequin. I want to be seen as a living, breathing human being with value outside of the way I look, and the way I dress. I actually was told I should work on boosting my socials before I release music, and I made an honest effort. I tried to stay true to myself and keep up. It just wasn't going to happen. It made me stressed so quickly because it isn't who I am. It was a betrayal to my own boundaries and values, even though I wasn't putting anything up that from an outsiders perspective, would go against who I am. It was all stuff I would have in my phones gallery, so why not? Because those moments aren't meant to represent me. The way I dress is a form of art. I love it! but I refuse to be "The girl who dresses up, oh and she makes music." Once I release music and have something out there that DOES represent me, it may change a tiny bit... But I could never do what these kids are doing. I am glad they are making a living and enjoying themself, but I wouldn't want that for myself.
I can't blame the kids for going this route because they are in their young and attractive years and can make a ton of money. College does not always equate success and I know blue collar guys who made good money and bought houses in their 30s. My problem is how a market like this even exists. The fact that so many people sit around all day and watch pointless TikTok videos that it generates this amount of ad revenue is more disturbing.
Just look at the replies on some of the top comments. Rambling messes of broken english and niche slang that basically all boil down to either "we like it so deal with it", or the classic, "you just don't get it." @@Alexander-wq7qo I have no personal experience with any private educational institution and was merely criticising a service I help pay for and expect to be held to a higher standard.
Q. Why does a market for this exist? A. Tik Tok and youtube rely on engagement metrics to guide people to content that will keep them engaged. The end goal is to put the viewer into a zombie-like scrolling state where they see ads (and ads get the platforms money). Short format is more effective in creating zombie mode than traditional youtube because youtube has a recommended video list where you actually have to think for a split second between videos. In short format, you just have to scroll down one. This is electronic heroin where the incentives for viewers and content creators have been carefully crafted by data scientists. Similar forms of control are being implemented in modern microtransaction hell videogames, only you are being subtly trained to give the videogame companies real world money. --- As for content creation as a career, it's slightly better than being in an MLM scheme, but you have to move so many views to make money that only the top 1% break even.

Times have changed and money making opportunities have shifted over time. The internet has by far been one of the biggest drivers for this. Millenials benefited from it and gen z is benefitting most of all from it from an opportunity standpoint and financial one. Gen z has the best advantage, being able to have such a large selection with a given starting point in the job market in todays current economy. Unfortunately the things these kids don’t learn are skills like critical thinking. A part of me admires their desire, sometimes talent, and drive but a lot of it seems very juvenile and immature. It’s bad enough during these times we’re dealing with so many adults who are ignorant uneducated with no critical thinking skills. Essentially, these kids are the bottom-line "employees" for marketing agencies and "social media managers". It seems like a brand new business model, but it's really just a new flavor of the same corporate structure. You have the influencers (bottom-line) that are managed by managers, the managers are at the beck and call of marketing directors and VPs at multinational megacorporations, who are at the beck and call of their own supervisors and c-suite executives. If these kids want a stable career that is likely to last longer than their fifteen minutes of fame, they'll have to become managers. And guess what? I'm gonna be honest, I think this is the worst possible decision a young adult could make. You are placing your livelihood, your basic needs, in the hands of an uncontrollable algorithm. You may argue, "Well, TH-camrs do basically the same thing, how is that any different?" With TH-cam being longform content, creators cultivate and nurture a community that flocks to them for their specific niche. If TH-cam somehow crashes or shuts down or changes, these creators can very well move to another platform while maintaining the same audience base. With this type of "content", you are making nothing of your own. None of your own dances, songs, even showing off your personality. No community is created around who you are besides maybe your looks, which will fade with time. What are these kids going to do when they're 27 and start to get wrinkles? Or aren't the next newest, youngest, prettiest thing? What are they going to do when the advertisers at TikTok and their marketing teams refresh the platform, and change the algorithm to suit longform content, or original creation? This lacks foresight entirely, and is a decision that could only be made by those who are doomed to never fully mature. The people who are really smart, who really SHOULD be doing this, are those in the documentary who are using TikTok as supplemental income, actually creating original content of notability, or as launch boards for secondary careers. edit: if you're about to comment "who gets wrinkles at 27": www.realsimple.com/beauty-fashion/skincare/types-of-wrinkles
Agree, most of the well known creators also diversify their streams on different things. If they work soly on content creation, there are also Patreon or other streaming service like Nebula. Plus being TH-camr means you also have more chance to be sponsored because the sponsor know and understand what type of niche or content you produce.
From what I see on the video they are aware of the possible downfall of Tiktok. Some of them have real jobs such as real estate and web developing. The thing that makes them stay on this platform is three things. 1-There gonna post online anyways so go all in with the benefits. 2- You post internationally which means multi-million advertising for free on your terms. 3-They get paid for the promotions and are sought after. These three things are what companies pay millions in research for to make billions, and these kids just stumble on it like buried treasure.

Not to burst your bubble, but as you get older you wouldn't care as much. Like the interviewer said, what wouldn't he give for a 10k. Granted some lines are drawn, like sacrificing your loved ones for the money is usually still a no go, but believe me a lot of adults will do things they say they wouldn't do on their younger days. The pressing bills, the want to give better life for your kids, the fact that most jobs don't provide for you as much as you needed, bankruptcy, etc will push you out of your comfort zone so much beyond you initially thought. As somebody who is 21 years old (who lives in the USA and is of a similar age to these people) it is frustrating to realize that many in my generation are selling their individual personalities, interests, and any sense of morality for the so-called "success" of being famous on TikTok. And also remember that Tik Tok is a social media company that promotes "trends" that have injured some people, or are simply meaningless to everyday life.
Just entrenches privilege. Usually only wealthy or attractive people do well. Nothing changes there, more wealthy and attractive people never having to work a hard day in their life.
As a Gen Xer, you seem to feel the same way I felt about the gangster rap artists of the '80s and '90s that promoted gangs, violence, drugs, and the degradation of women. You can still see their negative influence on music, trends, and the culture of the youth even today. Until reading this though, I never really looked at TikTok content creators as being on the same level as gangster rap artists from my era. (And in a lot of ways, I still don't.) Of course, that could have something to do with the fact that I'm rarely ever on TikTok. From content I have seen though, they appeared mostly harmless and annoying individuals just seeking attention. But, I see your point. That saying about history repeating itself now comes to mind.
Definitely a short term plan. They'll make a ton of cash when they're young, but like all child stars, they'll likely fall into irrelevance. And from there, they'll either find a new purpose or spiral into depression.
please remember that they are only a small portion of our generation 😔 it's not hard to see us kids still stressing about college and struggling with our jobs, just go out and you'll see that we're everywhere 😔
They are just embarrasing us, making parents more strict on us and making us have even less political power, by existing And people pay them to do that, to erase their parents’ progress while raising them. And they think they are cool!
Yes. The real problem is the other 97% of our generation who consumes this mindless feed of spam and porn and filth. You don't have tiktok, do you? I don't. It's a known virus.
As an older millennial, if I can go back in time to my late teens and early 20s and give myself advice it would be live your life for you. Don’t feel you have to be validated or liked by others because you’ll start to put others perception of you before yourself. If you don’t fit in anywhere, that’s okay. As long as you’re happy with who you are and comfortable with yourself without seeking others approval. Even if that means being alone, doesn’t mean being lonely. This Tik tok era mentality of these kids seems so unauthentic and unfulfilling.
I would also give the same advice to my younger self, except it was harder because my former job relied a lot on social media (I was a freelance illustrator/artist). If you're like me, I think it's okay to admit that you do want fame, but it's important to note that nothing should be put higher than your own health-both physical and mental, which sadly a lot of young people/content creators tend to forget
Damn, I really needed to hear that. I’m 27 and never really been into social media, but I’ve definitely been having a hard time finding where I belong. A lot of my friends want to do nothing but go out and party till 4am. I’ve never really been into that and just started going back to college to try and better my life. I worry that if I don’t party with them, or try and pretend to be into the things they are, I’ll end up being lonely. Even tho I’ve been spending more time by myself, I’ve felt a lot happier. Although, I keep holding onto this idea that once I get a good job and move out of my parents house, I’ll finally be happy.
Same here bro, they may make it look easy and "fun" but its nothing compared to the challenge of college where the fruits of our labors are more bountiful than dancing on a screen over a cringy song looking like a clown
What is college like now and days? Undergrad for me was at the cusp of social media. Facebook was barely becoming something beyond a college networking site (had to register with my edu email)

I don't blame these influencers. I blame the society that made this possible. All we did was create another avenue for people to become rich and famous. Tbh, they're no different than Hollywood elites but they have the ability to reach out to our youth and influence their career paths. For the ones that use it and rely on the formula will hopefully have invested enough to last after they're too old. For the others that use it as a springboard into actual career fields like marketing, videography, etc. or use it to network I give props.
The thing that sets these influencers apart from actual celebrities is that their career is much more fragile. The algorithm could suddenly stop recommending their videos and they'd immediately lose everything. It's a soul-sucking, stressful, and above all, an extremely risky industry that very few actually succeed in. Even then, you don't know how long that success will last.
Very fragile. I feel for them. Hopefully they can take whatever success they get and pivot to something healthier. Shed themselves of the social p0rn persona.
So many people on here like you that just have NO idea how the code in these apps works and trying to act like you're feeling bad for them when really you're just blown that you weren't making 6 figures in your 20s. Not everything about their lifestyle is okay, but the fact that they even had a short spurt of time making that kind of money and the opportunity to spend it wisely is commendable. Whether they end up doing that or not is to be seen, but it sounds like a handful of the ones in this video have some common sense and are just using this as a means to an end, with the end being achieving their goal of generating start-up capital for a business or a career in another field.
I can already see the affects of this on the younger generation I work at a small private school and although some kids are restricted from social media by their parents and are behaving like kids, others seem to have access to it and would already be behaving like "influencers" There's this girl who has a toy cellphone and would pretend to be an influencer and "film" herself dancing with her friends. Its actually very cute to see but knowing how much of an impact TikTok/Instagram has on kids is scary. Especially since kids under 13 seem to have access to it when we all know they're not supposed to There's this girl who is 11 years old and is constantly on TikTok (as a viewer, not creator) even stays up late to watch it which results her in coming late to school She is very rude, does not really respect authorities and will talk to the adults casually like we’re her bff. She misses a lot of days of school and never complets her homework. Her jokes are also pretty inappropriate Worst thing is, she actually been recently diagnosed with ADHD and my GOD she been so...happy abt it and bragging she has it and would always use that as an excuse as to why she can't do her work or help out with anything "Hey can you help me carry this?" "Can't, I have ADHD" "Why didn't you finish the assignment?" "I have ADHD" 😵💫
The 11 year old girl sounds like a normal tween with parents who don't know how to deal. Kids push boundaries as is normal. As teachers you can only set limits so far, the rest of the limits are set by parents and parents let her stay up as long as she wants.
As a person with ADHD... Man she isnt gonna love it for very long Lets just say she is gonna have some tough school years At least she got diagnosed before adulthood... Medication will be able to help her a little with is a privilage i did not have until after my school years

I laughed when they said some managers take a 50% cut. I'd rather work at FedEx than have someone take 50% of my earnings. This is why getting some sort of education is important.
As for the TikTok Creator Fund, you can earn between 2 and 4 cents for every 1,000 views. This means you might expect $20 to $40 after reaching a million views.
Their lack of business skills has way more to do with maturity than education. Young talents (or those with this kind of attention) have forever gotten f'd over by "managers" "agents" and contracts. This is nothing new. It's especially prominent in the music and entertainment industries.
As a first year college student,(Same age as the youngest in the house), I don’t see anyone younger or a bit older than me wanting to be an influencer. If anything they don’t think it couldn’t be successful or is “cringey.” I don’t blame the kids that want to do TikTok or are doing it as full-time either. It’s hard out here. Everything is getting so much more expensive when wages don’t rise fast enough. Also many are expected to go to college, it’s time and money. It’s so hard to buy a house too. Many lower class middle and so forth see our parents work tirelessly. It took 20+ years for us to buy a house since immigrating. We waited, so we could find the right priced house and save some extra money for stability. I don’t blame them for tying to find social media as an option.
Thank you for not blaming because it really isn't their fault. The blame falls on our government from not protecting us from this bullshit, and from our capitalist culture.
Blame in the proper order: 1) Their parents for failing 2) the idiots for watching their garbage 3) the greedy investors for propping up this garbage app
As someone who's been on social media since high school, giving it up was probably one of the better choices I made in life. It's all people chasing validation.
same bro. i'm only on youtube because of my college degree and math is hard so I search up math tutorials. i even let go of the phone itself. boredom is how we perfect ourselves. after all, a human is only as good as the shell of its being. boredom breaks it, and regenerates it. where boredom makes us reflect and do things, re-innovating ourselves and the world.
i just dont get what they have to offer and to whom? other kids? that's not saying much. at some point they have to grow up, if they grow up. managing money is as hard as making it, and keeping it. influencers seem like social outcasts. the only people in real life that they draw close is those that want their money. there is no real interest otherwise. they clearly dont offer any intellect or are educated. they take pretty pictures and videos, for other kids to mimic, then get exploited by companies to hawk their brands. it's quite sad. i made very good friends in college, and those friends helped me network and find very well paying jobs throughout my life. who will help these influencers move up when there's nothing to move up to? at some point, middle age will creep up, their looks will go, and their cuteness will be gone, as well as their sponsors.

Being a TikToker doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t get an education. There are a lot of TH-camrs and TikTokers who go to college and still do what they love. Honestly, I’ll be happy for these people if they will never have to look for a job and will be able to live off of TikTok. But what I’ve learned is, you always need another plan to rely on. And getting an education, doesn’t only mean becoming an adult, but it means so much more, experiencing and learning what the world has to offer. It means being given the tools to create and shape our future as individuals who will one day be the future of the world. It means having the opportunity to do something big one day, and no one says you can’t be a TikToker at the same time. Not everyone has this opportunity, unfortunately, which is unfair. And I’ve realized it actually going back to college. Honestly, to me this isn’t any good way to influence people. You can be an influencer and be a CEO, a firefighter, a doctor, a lawyer, an engineer, a scientist, an astronaut, an artist, a director, an ambassador, a famous stylist, even the President of a nation. This is what the future holds for our generation. The world needs these people, it doesn’t need millions of likes on TikTok.
i get where you’re coming from, but be realistic. anyone would rather earn millions from filming dumb tiktoks rather than getting into debt from a useless degree
@@exoticeditz8863 Yeah, except it doesn’t work for everyone. I said I wish those people would never have to look for a job, so that they can live off of TikTok and live their dream life, I just said that you need to have another plan to rely upon. Having a degree can at least help with finding a decent job. But without that? You can go homeless pretty quickly. It’s hard to find a job without a proper education. What if TikTok doesn’t work for you? Would you like it better to live a comfortable life with a degree that allows you to find a good paid job or would you like it better to have to do a job that you hate, miserable pay, no time for yourself and maybe fall in debt? Because that’s what happens if your ‘ Tiktok ‘ idea doesn’t turn out to be successful. I’m being realistic. I would love to earn millions on TikTok or Instagram, but a smart billionaire always has a backup plan.
Imagine trying to set up a market stall where you sell videos of your life, just, wtf. Or imagine taking pictures of yourself and showing people in the 90s, they'd think you're a narcissistic sociopath.
A friend of mine who is a high school economics teacher makes his students do a job project, where he picks at random from a pool of jobs for them. All these jobs do not require a bachelors and all of them can get them paid 6 digit salaries. He has gotten kids that weren't college oriented to become commercial divers and heavy machine operators. They don't even know these things were options if not for him.
Commercial diving pays a lot cause it’s very dangerous. Went to a trade school where 75% of the people who did it were forced out due to serious injury
alot of influencers alrady made many millions and never have to work another day in their lives if they didnt want to, they know its temporary, theyre not chasing a career theyre chasing money and its worked already, its the same thing with a job, they have more hands on experience in marketing and buisness than the average buisnes school that is 100,00 dollars into debt
This reminds me of the very reason why I’ve never once used tiktok. Glorification of the idiocracy that keeps regressing our society to the level of stupidity we’re at now
What will you do then? Get to college, caught in 500k debt trap, can't get a proper job, be a corporate dogs to pay off your debts, renting your apartment. From their perspective, it;s better to earn some bucks from tiktok. But whether how they'll use that money is the real question.
I love this. This will increase job security for people with a brain, and will reduce the stress of younger generations taking jobs from older individuals
the number of people who make good money on tiktok isnt a lot. This isnt going to affect job security. It wont affect anything other than some kids having nicer lifestyles than they would otherwise.
You fail to realize this will set america back a generation as these young people will grow up and realize they have no attention span, no skills that are useful to earn income, and an inability to think critically. We are going to end up like japans lost generation.
You guys are acting like college wouldn't just put them in debt for the rest of their lives. I bet you even if Tiktok doesn't work out, they'll be better off for wasting their time on what is essentially a small business with zero overhead.
I know it sounds very "get off my lawn" of me to say this, but I truly feel like social media is destroying a generation of our youth. I'm thankful that it didn't exist for most of my childhood. It encouraged me to do important things like reading instead of incessantly scrolling TikTok. That algorithm is strong and gets me sometimes as an adult. I am fearful for what that is going to do to the development of Gen Z.
It’s frustrating that this is now the norm. I understand that this is appealing to some but what about people who don’t want to sell themselves? Not everyone wants their face out there or wants to follow trends. Tiktok has changed all social media. You can’t just show something you created, you have to perform and feed the algorithm. Also, managers taking 50%! That’s crazy.
Wait until some more of them start getting taken out by crazy stalkers or have nervous breakdowns obessing over people's comments. Then they might see the benefit of having an once of privacy.
@@NomNomGirl1 Um I do! I’m just saying that it has become harder for artists to reach as many people because all social media is geared towards TikTok influencers. @@aj_makesmovies I think the case is that they're feeling extremely popular, but they fail to understand that TikToks and Shorts doesn't leave a lasting impact on the viewers.
I refuse to be a billboard."
I have used the term "human billboard" for a while.
Rambling messes of broken english and niche slang that basically all boil down to either "we like it so deal with it", or the classic, "you just don't get it." The public education system completely devalued introspection and critical thinking skills in a vain attempt to make people more obedient and now we get this brainrot.
@@XSpamDragonXand private education teaches this?
@@Alexander-wq7qo I have no personal experience with any private educational institution and was merely criticising a service I help pay for and expect to be held to a higher standard.

As for content creation as a career, it's slightly better than being in an MLM scheme, but you have to move so many views to make money that only the top 1% break even.

Times have changed and money making opportunities have shifted over time. The internet has by far been one of the biggest drivers for this. I’m not saying all these kids have this problem but it does seem to be fertile ground for mindless materialism. All they seem to care about is making money and being famous. The word "influencer" exists because these people cannot pinpoint their skill or contribution to society. This is true, but the value of her college education is probably overstated. If she went to business school, let's be honest, she didn't learn anything of value there. Most business schools are endless brainrot and busywork. It might have helped her critical thinking, but that's really it. You don't need a degree in marketing to understand marketing, since it's a concept anyone can learn over the weekend from a textbook.
The word 'influencer' is a desperate effort to artificially label a not so notable person as significant.
Exactly literally on point
what do you want them to call themselves
Couldn't agree with you more!
By that time the Chinese government would have all you information.

Me abd my siblings are between late 40s and early 30s and between the 5 of us, istg we only use TH-cam, WhatsApp and telegram for entertainment and communication, and we use normal email for other communication and search engines to research for normal work or day to day stuff. Personally, I'm online for less than 3.5 hours in a day which is usually a collection of minutes here and there during the day when answering messages and then an hour or two watching stuff on youtube before bed. I can say the same applies to most other people around me.

I'm not gonna lie, as a grad who felt like I had to be fully educated to the max only at a young age or I was worthless... I only now realised, education is a lifelong thing. You can always pick up studies, they will not run away from you.
What does run away from you is your youth. If they can have this pit stop in their life where they can make a loads of money, academic opportunities will always welcome them at any point they want to resume.
Kind of disagree with that. Went back to school in late 30's and wasn't easy. Had more responsibilities. You can do it but is just easier when not much other responsibility. Plus companies prefer hiring new grads in 20s than older grads.

You can still see their negative influence on music, trends, and the culture of the youth even today. Until reading this though, I never really looked at TikTok content creators as being on the same level as gangster rap artists from my era. (And in a lot of ways, I still don't.) The thing that sets these influencers apart from actual celebrities is that their career is much more fragile. It's a soul-sucking, stressful, and above all, an extremely risky industry that very few actually succeed in. Even then, you don't know how long that success will last.
