  • At the cobalt processing center, special robotic arms handle the hot Cobalt-60. You can view the radioactive cobalt, but only through thick glass. This glass wall, two meters thick, is impregnated with lead to block any radioactive leaks.

Cherenkov radiation (blue glow) is pretty cool to see. Normally you only see that around the reactor core.

The window is made of a pane of leaded polycarbonate, 2 panes of leaded glass and lots of iodine substituted mineral oil between them. The reason they make it like this is because the intense radiation would quickly discolor the glass and make it unusable.

Before the hydrogen bomb was first tested, Leo Szilard demonstrated that such an arms race was folly. He pointed out that by casing a thermonuclear device in normal cobalt, the neutron surge from the second stage would turn most of the cobalt casing into Cobalt 60, where it would circulate as part of the mushroom cloud to descend later as fallout. If just 1000 tons of Cobalt-60 was created this way and transported to the stratosphere, it's inevitable dispersion would wipe out all multicellular life on land. That's how bad this stuff is.

@@EnthalpyAndEntropy it's happened in like 4 or 5 different countries. The most 'famous' one was in Brazil. The Goiania incident. Same deal, couple dummies stole a teletherapy machine from a careless clinic that left it behind, they cut it open and Cesium 137 poured out of it. They were so fascinated by the blue glow they thought it was 'fairy dust.' The guy who owned the scrapyard was giving Cesium granules to people including his young daughter and wife. So all these people got infected from it and I believe 4 ended up dying and many others have permanent damage/ shortened life spans. It amazes me how ignorant people could be of radioactive items. It is the competent and responsible who end up paying for the recklessness of the ignorant masses. Some call it externalities. Others, collateral damage. One could point to entropy or inefficiency. If I have a kid and he's even half as smart as me he'll suffer immensely. His knowledge of the how and why would compound it. While the ignorant suffer it's mitigated by the justice of it and their ignorance.
