I remember class 31 on MT coal at Hellesdon. Norfolk. That's when we had a Railway ran by Railway men. Now we have a bunch of university They's and Thems who having got a fucking clue and our grossly overpaid twats
Wow, that brings back memories! I worked on the footplate, based at York between 1981 and 1986. I often worked the shift shown as 2:45 class 08 pulling wagons from Rowntrees (Nestle) to Dringhouses then back to Foss Islands with Coal etc. More great memories driving the dual head 20s (mostly P-Way), dual head 37s pulling steel from Tyne Yard and so many 31s, 45s, 47s. I also had the pleasure of driving almost all the Deltics before they were withdrawn. Wow, thanks for memory lane!
Glad you enjoyed it Dave, I know how you feel, I was a Signalman back in the good old days and always had a good relationship with the Loco Crew by having "The Kettle on" !
So many great locos, I loved the 20's and the Peaks in the video. I remember school summer holiday visits to York and how exciting it was to see so many trains there.
Well done, Roy, a great selection as always. How I miss the sound of those big Sulzers and the various EEs from down the years. I can manage without the eardrum-rattling screech of the Paxmans, however. Finally, some lovely footage of the big green kettle to close. Terrific!
York was one of those places that was a very special treat, always a few hours on the station, NRM, and of course the rail riders HQ then a few more hours on the station. Maybe a stop off at Doncaster. Wish I’d kept all my platform tickets and rover cards. Great video
I was a freight guard at Tees Yard in that era and remember the old track layout well, it lost it's character once they removed the main lines through what were platforms 8 and 9. I was having a few beers in York with friends one night when they were electrifying the station, when we came back to the station to get our late night train home to Middlesbrough they were in the process of lifting the main line footbridge in order to get clearance for the electrification wires. I wish I'd had a camera that evening :-(
Yes I still miss seeing this as I return to York Station after a journey. Because it was so vast in size and shape I still find it difficult to believe that it's all gone now.
Been to York a few times spotting in the very late 80's & only went through there a couple of months ago from Aberdeen. God its changed a lot! .......i noticed every diesel was in BR Blue, fantastic. 👍👍
Good to see the old track layout and additional platforms facing Scarborough. Bit like Crewe in that when it got changed in the mid eighties it lost a bit of its intrigue. Great video.
Nice footage of ECML traffic pre electrification days! Also liked the variety in types of coaching stock on these trains, MK1, MK2 a,b,c,d,e,and f were all there (I have to admit, keeping b and c, and e and f apart is difficult without seeing interior and ends properly)
Wonderful footage of all the diesel/electric locos taken 25 years before I first visited York plus museum. Coincidently as I got out of the car at the car park, Tornado reversed into the yard. Lovely city.
Once again, Roy, many thanks for posting this. I'm gradually working my way through all your videos. They bring back many happy memories of trains in the 80s.
Thank you for this video! You talk about the quality but you're wrong - as every moment passed it sharpened my memories of days on York's platforms - and others - in that era. Worth every second and share any more that you have! Thank you!
Great footage 39 years ago ❤️ Great memories also of British Rail Locomotion ❤️Miss the sounds of these classic Diesels to the sound of the Paxman Valenta Sadly nowadays a memory .Great footage of the Union of South Africa puffing through York back in the day ❤️
So glad you found this Roy. I was there regularly trainspotting only a few years prior to this - much was the same but the little differences are interesting. The spotters though hadn't changed at all! Great memories!
One of my earliest memories is of visiting York minster (not long after the fire), the railway museum and having a brief look into York station which in my memory seemed like a surreal and magical place with so many different classes of engine and train, all in rail blue. This video confirms that my memory was accurate.
Wow I had forgotten just how much trackwork and sidings there was at York back then . It’s all rationalised now with no through tracks in the middle, and i think some of the bay platforms have been removed.
A fantastic compilation Steve., Very good quality for the year. I really enjoyed it. in my posession I have the cad side nombers of a 20, 25 and a 45. must av ad em for 20 years now. Might be worth a bit when the kids get to my age' Cold not possibly lift one now.....hell of a weight.
Class 47/7's occasionally turned up on Newcastle Liverpool services, I always assumed they were enroute to/from Crewe as northbound loco's always ex works.
Why would the Guard tell people to change at York for Thirsk or Northallerton, when the Train had come through those places to get to York in the first place...?
The train was heading northwards into York so hadn't come from the Thirsk and Northallerton direction. As the guard asked passengers to change at York it tells you that particular service wouldn't be calling at Thirsk and Northallerton.
York Station was a very busy station in the 1980s until 1990 yor Station had charector in them days. I really miss that York Station has remembered seeing in 1987. Those class 20s were great in that film., sadly they have ruined once my favourite station, a lot of lines have long gone. It would be nice if they could bring two middle lines, and put extra more lines on
Love seeing all the rolling stock especially the BR Eastern regions HSTs in mixed liveries but I wish Hornby would release BR MK3 the carraiges they always bulls up the IC Executive and IC Swallow livery buffets MK3 coaches they bulls up the tooling with the incorrect roofing with the missing roof vents and incorrect underframe with missing battery boxes etc.
SUPERB to see the old Peaks again and the odd Chopper. Class 30's, 33's awesome THESE were the days when it was WORTH trainspotting as there were so omany diesels all different today everything is electric and looks the same all rubbish! All we get now is the odd 37 0r a 47 How i wish we had high definition HDMI cameras in those days !
I've pretty much lost interest in railways now. When I visit York station it is just shiny soulless units which have names that sound like Italian food.
At 5.48, you show an Intercity Executive Saloon. This is the first time I have come across such a vehicle, being WCML. Do you have any further information on this?
Brilliant! What I’d give to go back in time just for one day!
Can I come with you? I'd stay for longer than a day though!
Can I come too . Just for a couple of hours
They were the good old days my friend 👍
I remember class 31 on MT coal at Hellesdon. Norfolk. That's when we had a Railway ran by Railway men. Now we have a bunch of university They's and Thems who having got a fucking clue and our grossly overpaid twats
I so wish! One little day!!!!!

These were the gold old days & I used to go by York by train in the 1980’s this was a Mecca for train enthusiasts 🇬🇧👍
That brings back memories. When you could sit in the station buffet, with your binoculars and not have the signalling centre block your view!
Thank you, most enjoyable brought back many happy memories of my time spotting on York station in the 70s
So many great locos, I loved the 20's and the Peaks in the video. I remember school summer holiday visits to York and how exciting it was to see so many trains there.
top stuff, a couple of rare ones, Scotrail shove duff 47704 on a trans pennine working at 4.00 and the mk3 intercity executive saloon at 5.45.
Well done, Roy, a great selection as always. How I miss the sound of those big Sulzers and the various EEs from down the years. I can manage without the eardrum-rattling screech of the Paxmans, however. Finally, some lovely footage of the big green kettle to close. Terrific!
Really enjoyed watching this Happy memories of when York was busy all day and night with passenger parcels and freight.
Glad you enjoyed it
47704 was a rare sight south of Edinburgh. The Rowntree Express coming through at 2:57!
Fantastic footage. Brings back many happy memories. When the railways were a much more interesting place.
Couldn't agree more!
Another great video Roy. The railways in Britain were so much more interesting and diverse in those days. Your uploads bring back happy memories.
Glad you like them!
Thanks for posting the video Roy a real time capsule perfect to watch and have a brew whilst viewing.
Wow that video captures every thing that was good about York station. Thank you for sharing.

Also nice to hear an actual person with a proper regional accent on the mike at the beginning.
very happy days many thanks for the memories
Thank you too John.
Thanks for sharing this Roy, really interesting. Good passing shot of Dringhouses yard including the hump.
Glad you enjoyed it Dave.
Yes I still miss seeing this as I return to York Station after a journey. Because it was so vast in size and shape I still find it difficult to believe that it's all gone now.
How refreshing. "Ladies and Gentlemen, this is the guard speaking" Brought back some happy memories, thank you. Chris.
Yes Chris, those were the days when we had real Railwaymen working real trains.
@@royharrison4122 Not sure whether todays railworkers would feel insulted by your remarks.

Fantastic memories ❤ not ever forgotten! X
I love the new fast electric trains that are around now. It's the future. But, nothing beats the sound of those traction engines.
Yes, great memories, when the railways had character and comfort to travel in.
Nice great to see the 08 on the Rowntrees express !!
Thanks!
So glad you found this Roy. I was there regularly trainspotting only a few years prior to this - much was the same but the little differences are interesting. The spotters though hadn't changed at all! Great memories!
Glad you enjoyed it John.
happy memories from the 80s at least we had a decent variety of motive power instead of the crapy class 66s and class 70s
Can only echo previous comments. Brilliant step back in time. The 47/7, IC saloon, also noted the two Class 111 DMUs.
When trains were trains, not like the modern things they all look the same
Brilliant to see and hear the 'Peaks'.
Yes great sound
Wow amazing video , I’d love to go back to those times , I love it 🤩🤩🤩🤩

Memories, that's what its all about.
Loved the shots of No.9
I think your recordings are memorable ,especially Devon and Dawlish ,happy days.
Thank you Jeffrey.
Wow I had forgotten just how much trackwork and sidings there was at York back then . It’s all rationalised now with no through tracks in the middle, and i think some of the bay platforms have been removed.
Absolutely fantastic, wish York was like it now.
You and me both!
Great footage. As someone with roots in York and Spalding I really enjoy your films
Spalding? Me too...
Glad you like them!
Wasnt expecting to see Number 9 thats for sure!
Glad you enjoyed it
Some great footage there
Outstanding video compared to today’s locomotives
Thank you.
Thanks for putting this on.
Unlucky not to get a 40 at York, even in 1984.
That's just my luck Jake.

Looks great, shame York isn't as busy as that these days
Happy days, great footage.
Glad you enjoyed it
What took over the Newcastle-Plymouth service as far as York, which used to be a Deltic?
Class 47/7's occasionally turned up on Newcastle Liverpool services, I always assumed they were enroute to/from Crewe as northbound loco's always ex works.
Brilliant film, thank you
Thank You Anthony.
Another great Video -keep up the good work.
Great video... Real trains on a real railway
Thank you very much!

2:52 gosh those 08s were very powerful weren't they
Right. I'm off to my shed to get on with my time machine. Anybody coming?

i had 47451 between leeds and york on the 20th August 1982
Must been luxury those coaches
As a person who was on lines filled with pacers anything is luxury to me
What’s that at 6.52 ? Looks like a ghost of a Victorian car !!!!
totally confused me with some of your higher shots as to where you where standing
Brilliant
Thanks
i gad 47704 between Aberdeen and Glasgow on the 28th September 1985
WAS THAT ELTON JOHN AT THE END ON THE UNION OF SOUTH AFRICA WITH HIS HEAD
OUT OF THE WINDOW? WAS HE SINGING THIS TRAIN DONT STOP HERE ANYMORE
And also Old Oak's 47511 Thames 6:30 🤔
Great video brought back good memories
When the guard started speaking he sounded like Winston Churchill...
Yes ,if only they spoke like that now.
So sad that the Deltics had all been banished by this point in history. Their conspicuous absence is palpable throughout this footage.
Have you seen my Cine Film of the Deltics ? - studio.th-cam.com/users/videoKbv7cSVKX7s/

Sorry Bob, I don't have any gen on that Executive Saloon, Hope someone else will oblige.
That'll probably be 40513, which was one of the prototype HST coaches that was experimentally refurbished as an Executive Saloon in 1983, I think
1984 was the year York Minster was struck by lightning in the July and set on fire.
Yes, I remember that.
I wasn't even alive then but I wish I was
Tragic.
GOOD TO SEE 60009 WAS THAT ELTON JOHN WITH HIS HEAD OUT OF THE WINDOW WHEN IT WAS HEADING TOWARDS THE SCARBOROUGH BRIDGE?
Could well have been Christopher!
Britain's a crap hole today. Oh to go back in time.
Rot Diezel trein 🚆😠
Choo choo
Proper trains. No Japanese/spanish nonsense
I`ve cabbed Union of South Africa!!
