Yeah you were definitely going in with the knowledge. Happy to have found your channel! I enjoy discussions of the history and the craft and machinations of perfumery as well as the actual perfumes themselves
I LOVE this house. One of my favourite houses ever, and so underrated and forgotten lately. I find their creations so elegant, so well balanced, so carefully crafted, so well thought.... You can sense that elegant and contained dark gothic soul. As you say, this si true niche to me, not all those newer brands that copy classics and crowd pleasers and stick a 500 euros price tag to their tacky bottles....
Hi, can you please put a time stamp on your description so people know when you actually review each of the fragrances? Some people don’t want to wait or don’t have 20 minutes to hear about packaging, or like me they have to keep fast forwarding. Just a suggestion. Thanks ☺️
Vitriol d‘oiellet, I can’t believe it! ❤ It is beautiful, gothic, unique and absolutey underrated. The drydown is divine. Was my signature for a long time.
Maria I love your content so much that I never watch more than one video. This video feels like a class at the university. You communicate so well that it is impossible for me to not be super interested and absorb all the knowledge and the articulate and delightful descriptions you give. I can't play your videos in the background to do other things like I do with most youtubers. With your content, I need to sit down with a cup of coffee, and I truly enjoy them. I'm leaving this video very grateful and about to investigate more about this house ❤
Thank you for educating those who do not know WHO he really is and WHERE he came from. I've followed him for over 30 years and have 30+ Les Salons Du Palais Royal Shiseido vintage bell-bottle falcons of which in my opinion is their best packaging. AND I have many many more. While his Feminite du Bois/resin/fruit range put him on the map in the fragrance world his white florals are the crème de la crème IMO, and not many reach that level with exception to FM Carnal Flower. Fils de Joie is a projection bomb lol, one spray fills a room and I love it! SL, FM, OJ and LAP are the core of my collection. Niche is my jam! Carnation = Lorenzo Villoresi Garofano, amazing! Nice review, you have a new sub.
Well. I'm a dude, and most of these are understandably feminine florals. But I have a few of them. Earlier today I wore Gris Clair. Fantastic lavender. One of my favorites. And tonight I am wearing Santal Majuscule from my latest new Serge Lutens bottle. My new favorite sandalwood fragrance, displacing D.S Durga Radio Bombay. Majuscule is a very buttery sandalwood, with very subdued rose and cacao notes to sweeten it. Not too sweet to me but I can understand it might be for some people. Keeping in mind I'm a dude, here is my Serge Lutens collection: Gris Clair 5 O'Clock Eau Gingembre Arabie Chergui Ambre Sultan Santal Majuscule Fille en Aiguilles (decant) Vetiver Oriental (decant) Feminite du Bois (decant) My introduction to Serge Lutens was through the hype of Chergui.
Love this overview on one of my favorite houses ❤ to me fleur d’oranger is the real smell in the air in spring time next to orange trees fields which is actually pretty different from the classical orange blossom cologne most brands proposed (mostly along the lines of what one can find in Molinard or Le Couvent) and I love it for being so realistic 😊
Hi from Australia. A fantastic video, thank you so much! I love that you gave some history, the back story, explained about the packaging and your explanation of the fragrances. I have 3 SL so far. Filles en Aiguilles, De Profundis and Feminite du bois. I love the black, architectural feel of the bottles of the first two. And I love the fragrances as well. New subscriber 🙂. And, I love love almond/amaretto. I also am searching for this.
Hello Maria, I appreciated your review of Serge Lutens. It's a great house and underrated which means wearing them will make you smell different than other people, but the fragrances are still very wearable and most apart from the bell jars and black bottles are reasonably priced. It was my first step into niche and I am still adding them to my collection. I discovered many of my favourite content creators by looking up reviews on this brand. Great video! I like your new thumbnail the pink is energizing and eye catching. - Jenn
Yep they choose you! Like fils de joie did. If you ask me I do prefer Fleur d’oranger but now if I had to choose which one to keep with me I would go for fils de joie. Magical juice ❤
Great intro and very informative video, love listening to your content, the way you describe things ! You definitely got me curious about some Lutens I haven't tried yet ! 😄 I remember a few were in the first order of samples I bought when I started getting interested into fragrances... Santal Majuscule, Chergui and Jeu de Peau. After that I blind bought a few when I found good opportunities. I'd say it is rarely a love at first 'snif'... but the fragrances of this house have something special that intrigues me, therefore I keep revisiting them. Sometimes they end up growing on me and become a favorite of mine (Fille en Aiguilles so far, but others might follow ! ). I do not know if you knew this, but 'Dent de lait' means "milk tooth" in French, never smelled that one but your description of it makes total sense given the name. 😁
New sub here: enjoyed this presentation and your take on SL. I have probably 5-6 full bottles and then another 5-6 decants. Some are loves, some are confusing. 🤷🏼♀️ It’s all part of the fun. Looking forward to perusing your old content and learning more about your collection. Thanks!
Fascinating and in depth review! Serge Lutens was my gateway drug into the fragrance world. The Sheldrake signature ‘fruit and woody’ blanket was genius. To me, it was almost as if he was trying to recreate an Oud note without oud before others came around to the idea. I do find that the packaging differences can indicate different strengths (export vs bell jars) and sometimes, reformulations.
oh thank you! Reformulations are always a topic of interest. While they can bring new dimensions to a scent, they sometimes alter the original composition, and sure enough it is never explicitly disclosed. It's a delicate balance that fragrance brands must navigate, often driven by changes in ingredient availability or regulatory guidelines. I suspect the superstitious views on repackaging are born from that fear. Thank you again for sharing your insights! It's always a pleasure to engage with fellow fragrance enthusiasts who appreciate the intricate art of perfumery 😘🌺❤
@@MariaMeliora Yes I agree… it is not the fault of the perfumer nor the brand when reformulations occur. There are restrictions that they must adhere to. However, reformulations have very real impacts. At one point, I had a full collection of the different packaging for Chergui (Palais black, SL white, SL black, in export bottles vs Paris bell jars, green juice, brown juice, purple juice). Each revised packaging was a unique version of Chergui, however, each same packaging was identical to others with same packaging. However some scents smell exactly the same throughout the packaging changes (ie Daim Blond). That’s one of the beautiful things about Serge Lutens: the mystery. The ingredients are always top quality, similar to the old Chanel formulas. None of my old ‘Palais’ bottles have turned. They are as strong and dense as they were on the very first day.
To begin with hv to appracite u doing a video on Serge! it's indeed one of the OG niche brands that put uniqueness in literal terms to the fragrance market. Nbody talks about them anymnore what a shame. i guess their creations are too artistic or an acquired taste atp that most new gen fragheads don't understand the DNAs...Also i loved how entertaining and patient you are in this video, didn't rush and really good humour! You have a large selection here from this house as i can see. i only have three. Ambre sultan, vetiver oriental and serge noir and i love all three! Sadly many got discontinued over the years and even got pricier in their weirdly long black bottles lol...
I adore Serge Lutens. I discovered the fragrances thru a perfume subscription. My first taste of Serge Lutens was Feminite Du Bois. I also really enjoy Un Bois Vanille. I want to try some more and some you spoke about.
Thank you for this. This primer was precisely what I needed to understand Serge Lutens. I wonder if you would go into depth about the product design aesthetic. The font and bottle architecture speak directly to me. I ask you this because from the instant you started speaking I fell in love with your presentation and visage.Visage. In particular 'At Home.'
I have one bottle from this house and I just ordered another 1. The first one I very much enjoy( Chergui ) Hopefully, I spelled it right. I love trying out interesting houses.
It sounds like you're building quite the collection! Chergui is definitely a beautifully unique scent, and you spelled it perfectly. I hope your second bottle is just as enjoyable. Exploring different fragrance houses is such a fun journey-there’s always something new and surprising to discover!
I love serge lutens! And you’re so right: the scents choose you. I tried l orpheline not expecting much and then i was hit with a mix of emotions and I literally teared up. I belong to this scent and the images it conjures. Also, do you think Dans le bleu qui petille sweetens over time on skin? I m a bit confused because on me it feels like it gets vanilla-ambery while sustaining the marine accord?
The first one - lovely just lovely pine needles and jammy rose, but since I have the portrait of a lady and amouage epic I decided it is not worth the splurge
None of them are niche anymore. One is owned by Shiseido, the other by Estee Lauder. Lutens has some masterpieces, although some were reformulated, Malle’s perfumes are garbage.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! It's true that the fragrance world has changed a lot with big companies acquiring niche brands. While some people find reformulations disappointing, others still enjoy the artistry behind many of these perfumes. I guess beauty really is in the nose of the beholder!
Serge Lutens Is the most amazing brands out of the hype that destroy so many Fragrance, every year i wish to smell the same Beautyfull formula as they where created, Wishing he never but ever change or reformulate nothing. Serge Lutens Is all over the Niche and some Niche are wothless
Just had to mention when everything else is perfect; there's a lot of background white noise that you're mic is picking up (due to too high settings on it)
Unfortunately I really I can't appreciate new releases from Serge Lutens. I have several old palais royal. My favorite: Douce amere, À la nuit, Iris silver mist, Chêne, Miel de bois. Vitriol is a beautiful carnation, but I also recommend "Garofano" Lorenzo Villoresi.
I used to wear 2 beautiful fragrances from Lutens : un bois vanille which is a marshmallow woody coco vanilla loved it but I guess it has been reformulated it is less « thick » now. And the beautiful Rahat Loukoum a true Gourmand it has cherry rose honey bitter almond Tonka vanilla, delicious ! It is sweet but not cloying. It came in the black refilable 30ml bottles some times ago but not anymore its a shame. We only can find it in those rounded crystal bell bottles now. Cheers from Paris ❤
Serge is the house where I can wear a fragrance and not be reminded of another. Truly unique masterpieces
Idk why but my local SL sales said i should get L’Orpheline & Nuit De Cellophane if im looking for scents that’ll never be found in other fragrances
Yeah you were definitely going in with the knowledge. Happy to have found your channel! I enjoy discussions of the history and the craft and machinations of perfumery as well as the actual perfumes themselves

Yet to try their Toison d'Or re-releases. "Plant juice" listed on Parfumo as a note in the new Chergui?? Yyyyyyikeeeepoo. 😬 Loved the vid Maria.
Lol, I noticed ‘plant juice’ as a new listed ingredient too. I don’t know how I feel about that.

I really like your makeup here. Could you share what you used in the terms of complexion products and eyeshadow?
it has been a long while :)) to my memory nothing special, tarte concealer, some powder. the way skin looks in video is mostly about lighting :)
Amazing video. Thank you.
