On a US submarine, these luxurious accommodations would take 10 years to work up to, for enlisted. My first bunk was in the torpedo room, in the lower torpedo rack with a bedsheet strung up with twine for privacy from the walkway. :)
@Dtronic2 Wow, that must have been an experience! So if a torpedo was fired from the lower rack, it would whistle out past your ear?

Crew cabins - can be a nightmare or a blessing, that's why I love to work on Abeking & Rasmussens haha! Massive crew cabins, yay!

Call me weird but I've always been fascinated by crew members and the quarters they stay in for Yachts 🛥️ and cruise ships 🚢 because Everyone ALWAYS wants to see the ships and fun parts of the boats but I like seeing where the people who run things sleep/eat because without them, it's just a big boat incapable of going anywhere unless it has the crew! Thank you for sharing I'm going to subscribe now.

I love watching these videos as it gives me a look at a different world. So thank you for posting these. And I think I could live in a tiny space but sharing with another person? Nope.
Note your bathroom mirror suits you just fine. Common problem for females like myself who is 5'2" is that yacht bathroom mirrors are positioned for men (or those who are over 5'10" tall. So my tip for the ladies would be to bring along a a personal mirror with a suction cup which you can position yourself.
This isn't something that I've ever even considered! Just shows how important it is to hear things from somebody else's perspective. Thank you so much for sharing your experience.

At a similar time as this video was published I was in similar cabin, on a little bit older yacht, 50 m.
Quite similar cabin, I slept like a baby on the top bunk, especially when we were outside the port..

Having someone stepping on you at 5:00 AM every morning is the best reason of all to grab the top bunk whenever possible. For some reason the bottom bunk seems to catch every single grain of sand brought onboard.

Hello Robert. It is my pleasure to welcome you to the channel. I'm currently doing a radar course with an instructor who served for 28 years in the Royal Navy. He has mentioned on more than one occasion that submariners are the true masters of radar. In what capacity did you serve?

Hi Gopesh. The changes to yachting from COVID-19 are still evolving. For now it is much the same as in other industries, with safety measures to protect crew and guests from contracting the virus, and contingency plans in case somebody on board has (or is suspected to have) it. In addition, there are more stringent checks by some port authorities to ensure that ships entering are healthy. We cannot yet know when things will return to normal (or at least the new normal). Only time will tell!

1) Do you regularly interact with the passengers or only occasionally ? Has it ever happened that you became friendly with a passenger and had a drink with that person, on the yacht ?
2) Depending on your rank as a deck officer, how much time do you have to go ashore when in port ?
3) If you anchor somewhere for the passengers to have a swim could you also go in the water ?
Hello Navigator.
1) This really depends on the owner or guests. Some don't wish to interact with the crew at all; however, some really enjoy getting to know the crew. In this case, they may take the crew out to dinner, or celebrate special occasions with them by throwing a party on board. It will more likely be as a whole crew, rather than just an individual crew member socialising with an individual guest. Whatever the case, crew must always remember that they are employees, and should be careful not to cross this boundary.
2) If the yacht is in port and there are no guests on board, all crew (except for those on watch) will generally be free to come and go from the yacht outside of work hours.
3) This depends on how busy the crew are, and if the guests would be happy for them to join in. Some of the deck crew would be in and around the water anyway whilst supervising the guests.
I worked on one yacht where we spent the majority of our time at anchor. Crew were able to swim around the yacht in the morning before the guests were awake, and before they were due to start work.

@@WorkonaSuperyacht Thanks man. I was actually heading to Antibes this year, but with the pandemic, i needed to change my plans. Now im waiting for the next season to finally go to Antibes. I work as a bartender for 6 years at MSC Cruises, and i also hold a comercial airplane pilot license. Hope that this give me some points for my first job, since im also already 37 years old, but i love the life onboard. Anyway, you videos always help me with a lot of information
@Caio De Biase Then you're more than qualified for the role of deckhand! The pandemic has had a big impact on the industry, but I hope things will return to a point where you'll get your chance next year. I'm pleased that these videos are of use to you in the meantime.

Cabin inspection? I worked as a helicopter instructor pilot aboard a 50 meter and was berthed in a (huge) guest cabin. But NO one onboard ever said anything about cabin inspections.
That sounds like a fantastic job! Cabin inspections are done to ensure that crew are keeping them clean and tidy, and to make sure there are no defects such as lights or aircon not working. If you were staying in a guest cabin, it is likely that the stews were keeping on top of the cleaning. In addition, they would have noticed if anything wasn't working and needed fixing.

Haha, the last submariner I heard from said that he slept next to the torpedoes! The loudest we get up in the bow is the sound of the anchor and bow thruster, which I'm sure is nothing by comparison!
@@WorkonaSuperyacht Part threes, trainees, sleep with the Torpedos. On one Boat the Foreplanes ram was 2 ft from my head by my bunk, noisy but you got used to it. Really enjoy the vids. Stay safe.

What if the crew members are or opposide sex, would you still share cabins?
Hello Folkert. It depends on the yacht. Some yachts won't allow members of the opposite sex to share a cabin (unless they're already a couple); however, I've shared with a female before, and I know of friends who have done the same on other yachts.

Hello Stelian. My last captain was over 2 metres tall, and he started out as a deckhand before working his way up. Larger yachts over 50 metres in length would be more comfortable for you.

Hello Sam and welcome to the channel. Yes, the Maritime Labour Convention requires that all crew areas are checked for standards of cleanliness and to ensure everything is being maintained in good order. This includes the repair of things like air-conditioning and lighting where necessary. The inspections can sometimes feel like a bit of a nuisance but they are in fact there for the welfare of all crew members.

Thanks Miami Eyes ME! Some banks still don't allow you to deposit cheques using a camera, but I very rarely receive them so it's not too much of an issue.

Are you two comfortable going in the restroom to shave or brush teeth when the other one is showering or no? With most of your past roommates is nudity a problem or not?
In this particular shower room, I don't think you could get two people in at the same time! I remember doing my STCW courses with a group of marines, and I think 6 of us were sharing a dorm room. In the morning, there was one in the shower, one on the toilet, and one brushing their teeth! But I haven't experienced this on any yacht. Personally, I'd rather have the shower room to myself!
As for nudity when getting dressed etc, I haven't ever found it to be a problem. I guess your cabin mate will soon tell you if it is!
