I had the new PHB for about 48 hours now, its the worst art of any book I have purchased (started buying and playing D&D in 1991). I have yet to dig into the book. I was going to buy the new PHB regardless of what I thought about it, my 1st impression is hard pass, I am never using this material, and this could be the last book I do buy from wizards of the cost.

  • @VoidCrawlerAnger

My biggest problem isn't that there is too much physical diversity.
Im most upset by what seems like the lack of tonal diversity.
Newer D&D editions just get lighter and more colorful, everyone is confidently smirking. Which isnt bad, you do need breaks and happier moments to balance things out, but where are the old enigmatic things?
Ruins, dead civs, old evils, forces cryptic and beyond the material plane.
There use to be almost a horror when depicting your adversaries.
Cultists in dark caves with obscure unknown symbols carved in to flesh and stone.
Like that image of Kyuss (the large cloaked figure in the burning town) invokes dread. Old ancient horror.
Hell come to your hold, to devour and despoil. The guard are utterly overwhelmed by his size and the whole scene is a nightmare.
The only time you will know how brilliantly you shined as a hero, is when your measure is tested by the darkest realms.

DIEversity in DnD is exactly like "diversity" and "multiculturalism" everywhere else it's toted. It's a big fat lie. Merely a cudgel to attack everything wholesome, normal, and white. Their art is stupid because all they want to play is gay sims, not DnD. It's bland because they are bitter mental midgets. It's ugly because it is entirely wrapped up not on bringing different people to a war game, but entirely on hating whites.

I just ordered the HC/Digital combo, but I'm waiting till August for the HC (backorder). From what I've absorbed so far, it's very mechanically streamlined and the art and page layouts are nice too. There's even a quality section on Deities, which would be helpful to those without a pre-chosen campaign setting. Shadowdark packs a lot in one book, and does it well. Great stand-alone, and jumping off point for home brewing.
Two thumbs up on Shadowdark imho.

According to my teenage nephew and his gaming group and thier GenX Dad DM, they are sick of wotc and more people by the day are seeing it for the pandering corporate trash that it is. Their group isn't going to play the new edition, they are going back to either real D&D (TSR Built), Shadowdark and Dragonslayer.
It's kind of like trying to convince margarine-eaters that a way better product is out there and has been all along. They don't have to eat turkey-fattener, just give butter a chance.
People are figuring out the connection between corporate ownership, DEI intrusion into thier hobby by Fund Managemnent Corporations with a DEI agenda. I avoid purchasing corporate products, I prefer to buy second hand with cash, and avoid any tribute making its way to Blackrock aka "The Evil Co."
Those too enthralled by corporate D&D to jump ship to the OSR, I liken to Chrysler brand loyalists that still bought Chrysler brand even when the company was bought-out and they're built in a crappy Italian car factory. A big issue is relatability. Gary Gygax stated in the DMG (I’m paraphrasing) that most characters would be human and that no characters should be monsters due to the lack of relatability. Even players who were allowed to play as a monster would eventually lose interest due to this important aspect. Presently, I am trying to work through several different PC options like elves, dwarves, etc. just to present them as vastly different from humans. I think most times players end up playing a human with pointy ears or a drinking problem and that’s the extent of their “elfiness” or “dwarfiness”
With what WotC is doing, I don’t think anyone can truly relate, and I believe this is as much a factor in why campaigns peter out after 6 months as anything else. Relatability. WotC has missed the target as badly as trans story time at your local library.

I backed C&C reforged. No more money to WoTC, especially in their electronic format. I have soooo much older edition stuff I never played right, I want to do that too, either 1E or BECMI. As for the new art, it is so pastel and soft, and boring. I need edges. That’s why the old school black and white drawings from Jeff Dee, Sutherland, D.A.T. and others are so attractive, and the vibrant colors of artists like Erol Otis, David Sutherland, Dave Trampier, and Bill Willingham are so central to pulling me into the fantasy worlds of great writers like Gygax and Arneson, Ward and Carr, Kuntz and others. WoTC is just debasing themselves by crapping on the past.

I'm a fairly new TTRPG player (3 years ish at this point) who grew up on Tolkien, Pre-Disney Star Wars (eventually the Disney stuff too) and Bungie Era Halo. I'm at least willing to "try" the new books (free book pdfs are so easy to come across these days frankly) and I kept up with the playtests for the 24/25 books. I'd say a fair bit of the art I've seen is fine, some bits are questionable and there's a couple pieces I'm just like "Okay what even is this?" I actually got the 50th Anniversary Arts and Arcana book and have been steadily thumbing through it and it's really nice to see some of that older art and history behind the game. Some of the 2e, 3e and 4e designs for monsters feel leagues better than 5e.

That audience over and over says they want all this messaging in their games, comics, movies, t.v., sci-fi, fantasy, horror, etc... BUT they very very rarely support these companies financially when they cave to them.
And it makes sense a lot of these more left-leaning people are anti-capitalist. Why would a group like that support you financially? @@thodan467 Gilgamesh epos was only written in part by the Sumerians (3000-2400 BC), while Akkadians (2400- BC) wrote and complied the rest. Modern genetic analysis shows that the Afro-Asiatic people migrated from the Northern Caucasus region (around 12k BC Europe) to Anatolia. And from there, they spread (8500 BC) with the animal husbandry to the Middle East, Africa and towards India. Or at least their genes for the color of the eyes and skin. Btw. The Middle East and Anatolia was dominated by the R1b Y-DNA Haplogroup that is most common in western europeans, like the Irish.
And where do the Aryans count as Caucasians? Everywhere. Even the WW2 Germans thought of them as their predecessors.
Not only do they count as Caucasians, but they do even further count as Indo-Europeans that descended from the Yamnaya (3300-2600 BC) and Corded Ware (3000-2350 BC) culture and this is as good as being directly from Europe:
      1) The ancestors of the Aryans came from North Eastern Europe (2600 BC) out of the Corded Ware culture over the Ural to Asia and formed the Sintashta culture (2200-1900 BC). From this region they spread to Iran and India as the Aryans.
      2) They have the R1a Y-DNA Haplogroup that is related to the Slavic and Scandinavian R1a Y-DNA.
      3) The genetic analysis of the males of the Sintashta Culture showed that they are mostly related to the Irish (over 40%) and Scandinavians (over 25 %), while the rest is distributed around Norther-, Central- and Eastern Europe.
      4) They speak a language and use symbols that originated from European Corded Ware Culture.
