this era of these models was probably the best years of my life. I remember how spooky and exciting it was....and I just LOVED the art work on the boxes. I remembered our local "F.W. Woolworth" store had a large display of models and these were the "featured ones". "Famous Monsters Magazine" even had a building contest. Kids had their models on display in woolworth's display window.....it was just great !!!

Aurora monster kits,Famous Monsters of Filmland, The Outer Limits, Twilight Zone, Batman, Slot Cars,Schwinn StingRays & Krates, Monster Theatre weekend TV moveis, etc. What a great time as a kid in that Era ! Now its smart phone !!! boy have todays young kids missed out of the fun !
I'm a child of the 60's (born 1955) so Aurora monster models and Famous Monsters of Filmland were a BIG part of those years. Unless you were there, You can't imagine what a big thrill it was for 9 year old child to walk into King's Department Store and see those Aurora monster kits on display, stacked almost up to the ceiling! And the prices! .77 cents!!! Even then, it was all I could do to manage to get my Mom to buy ONE for me. But eventually, between allowance money and other ways, I manged to acquire every (and I do mean EVERY) Aurora monster model kit. This included not only the classic figures, but also all the hot rods and the Munsters/Addams Family/Super hero kits. Sadly none of those great kits survived into my adult years. But back in 1985 I bought the Monogram re-issues and built them with a bit more care than I did as a child (you can just imagine what those early efforts turned out like). Today, thanks to Polar Lights and Moebius, I've been able to build up my collection again. And one day soon, I'll be trying out my new airbrush on some of them.
i hope models make a comeback someday. i think it's something kids need to get into, working with their hands, doing something that has tangible results, having pride in workmanship....
great show! You are an awesome modeller! I enjoy the video- feels like Im hanging out in a basement as a kid making models and watching monster movies on tv at the same time. I hope to find an episode you did with monster models with the glow in the dark faces and hands. I think they came out in the late 60s/early 70s when I was about 5 yrs old. A lot of my friends had them-
I'm a real sucker for glow-in-the-dark stuff and if I had a chance to go back and do it all again, I would've built those models WITH the glow in the dark parts. Like alot of people, I too ignored the glow-in-the-dark sections and put them aside and/or lost them because I was too young and didn't get it. Stupid! But now I do but it's too late unfortunately. I think the whole Frightening Lightning Glow-in-the-Dark thing was a really great idea that Aurora had that was misunderstood. Oh well, at least I was smart enough to have kept the box artwork. Great illustrations.
My father passed away recently. I have inherited all of his model kits. He died at 72. Now I have all the original Aurora monster kits not built. Plus all of the remakes from Polar Lights and Amoeba. Multiples of the same kits as well. Some still unopened.
I had all these when I was a kid. About ten years later Aurora started making some of the model pieces glow in the dark. I was too old to play with monsters by then, but still young enough to consider this “glow-in-the-dark” crap to be blasphemous.
@harveydents Dip brush lightly in paint, wipe most paint off on a clean rag and then swizzle the brush LIGHTLY around on your model letting the minute pigments settle on the raised details ONLY.....For in depth view just search "How To" videos here on youtube (Obvious choice, aehh?)!!!

素晴らしいの一言です。自分が小学校の頃、ひとつ650円でした。小遣い貯めて、(貯めるのは当時650円でも大金でした)最初に買ったのがMUMMYでした。凄いインパクトで半世紀以上経った現在、調べたらバマ？と言うパッケージのイラストで造形師はビル·レモンと言う人でした。このムァミーはボリス・カーロフではなく、当時の映画を調べて様々なDVD買い漁りましたら、イラストそっくりのミイラシリーズの何巻かにがありました。でも映画では脚にコブラは巻き付いているシーンはありません。
つまりこれはオーロラ独自の想像力と創造力で世に発表したと思います。
その他、イラスト見ると、当時誰をモデルにして造っていたか?
ウルフマンにしてもイラストとプラモは違います。イラストはロンJRで独特のインパクトある豚っぽい狼。ところが中身は全く違う狼男。ハンチャバックも中身は無声映画時代の有名なノートルダム寺院、及び大聖堂でのロケのロン·チャニーで、箱のイラストはアンソニー·クインとか何種…オペラにしても後方下の監禁された人も映画にはなかったし。何しろオーロラは独自のインパクトで独特な想像力で素晴らしいプラモを造っていましたね。本当に色々ありますね。60年以上経ってオーロラの歴史を検索するのもワクワクします。それだけ子供心に焼き付いた素晴らしいメーカーですね!
