I was just thinking about "nobody here" and hadn't seen you in ages and then did a search on the visconti sforza (I just got a beautiful gigantic deck and am loving watching other people talk about theirs) and there you are!!! I started filming in a similar style to yours, mainly just my ha ds and the cards... of course I'm new and so my quality isnt yet the best. I'm still figuring out how to record and upload without losing my video! It's frustrating sometimes. .y best videos never upload only my clumsy ones...
Hello :) I have been moving away from tarot gradually actually :) So although I am still uploading, I think TH-cam algorithm has decided that I am not to be suggested to tarot people anymore LOL How have you been? I have stopped watching Tarot Tube for the most parts but love to remain connected to the friends I made here :) Will subscribe to you now :)
They are aren’t they. Now if only OTO who owns these images can just publish the remastered edition in English..... even this one is now a mission to search....
This is the beautiful and thoughtful rendition this deck deserves. After watching your video, I managed to score a copy from AGM by using the exact ISBN#. I only wish it came in a deluxe size. Until then I'll read it with my video magnifier!
Thank you very much for this video. I am looking for this deck for some time already. I saw it before and liked it very much, but didn't knew the publisher. It is not so saturated and bright as US games' one, but it is much more detailed and have more mm... quite and serene nature so to say... just a note. Unicursal Hexagram is not Crowley's personal sigil. He developed it as a replacement for a regular hexagram in ritual practice. Later it became one of the symbols of Thelema and O.T.O. Crowley's personal sigil however can be seen on the chest of the Prince of Wands and on Ace of Pentacles cards in Thoth deck.
This is my favorite Thoth version; I've even grown to not mind the borders. ;-)(It helps that the backs have no white borders!)I love how you can really tell that it's been painted with watercolours.I've recently edged it in gold, using a Posca Uni paint pen, making it even more sumptuous. It's interesting to compare it to the US Games one; apart from the over-saturated and over-contrasted colours on US Games compared to this one (the US Games one wasn't *that* bad in the 80s; they just seem to be pushing the colours a bit more each time they do a reprint), the shapes are different.Things that are perfect circles here in this German edition, like the moon in the Moon card, are oval in the US Games edition.
Etto Liram Sounds like USG has stretched their images a bit then. I think that and the colour saturation being more and more garish each year is a function of cost cutting in production. A running theme with them. At least with regards to reproductions of RWS and the Crowley’s Thoth. I just find it tragic that OTO can’t publish its own images in English. So bizarre. So insane. The law and capitalism.
They were sold at AGM-Urania’s website. But the last time I heard, US Games gave them a hard time since they present better products to compete with theirs. Even though the images of the Thoth tarot belongs to OTO, and not US Games, for example, OTO was not able to publish in English this newly digitised images from 2008. Which is why this is in German. It is sad considering Crowley and Harris were English speakers and the original Thoth tarot was in English.
@@NobodyHere I empathize with your frustration. I suddenly had an interest with Thoth and AGM Urania decks because of your channel! Putting this one in my wishlist.
I have just watched a video on youtube about Crowley,s old house cannon cottage and on floor was that same pattern with bowls painted white with names on them obviously it must of been some sort of ritual taken place there but the explorers didant have a clue what it was all about have you seen that pattern before ? it,s a bloody shame there,s no English i really enjoyed your vid though thanxs.
I wouldn't have a clue so sorry. But about the English version of this, OTO, the actual owner of these images may be the organisation to contact, to see about what we can do, to help the English version of this amazing remastered version to be available to the world. US Games is manipulating a legal loophole they have with OTO's distributor. I will check if I have linked some info about this in the description section, if not I will add those now.
Folks have been finding it difficult to locate this one. I am not sure if they have been clamped down even when publishing in German, which would be outrageous. But do look around ebay and Euro based sellers. Good luck!
Interesting, and great to see their reproduction true to the original. I have the same USG deck you mentioned, not for use, more for studying. If I were to use this deck I'd definitely love this reproduction in English. Love that OTO is involved in this, as I'm sure they would have paid utmost attention to detail. Such a shame they can't print English. I really love the box presentation they come in, its simplicity and the solid colors of purple and gold, seems very reminiscent of the western traditions feel, Golden Dawn'ish. Funny what you mentioned about the borders sometimes becoming distracting, I feel the same often, and it's something I was thinking about the other day commenting about the Tarot de Paris borders, not that they seem distracting, but it just reminded me of that issue. I'm very visually oriented I think, so it's something I find interesting/important to consider. I could never cut/slice cards though lol. I'm far too precious about decks! Thank you for this run through too, really appreciated!
Ah! Interestingly, with Tarot de Paris I didn't even think of the borders! Perhaps in the case of Thoth for me is all the qabalah and astrological signs as well as the keywords on top of the titles. There are four things going on just on the titles! But the art work repro here is truly lovely. They seem more lighter in colour and not as saturated, but more crisp, and detailed. I love it. Now if I can just figure out what the "Golden Edition" is. I don't need any more gold LOL but I would not mind larger! :D
Weird that these publishers/stores are ambiguous about deck version details. I mean it seems pretty basic to me -to list size details, and 'Edition' particulars to customers.
I think partially because they are all in German. And also, because now they have been blocked by USG from selling their English version to the UK and USA, the English listing have disappeared.
Yeah. History has now moved those originals into the category of historical artefacts in my personal opinion. They are no longer mere tools. I hope she enjoys her time as its custodian. Thanks for watching.
Hello. I am not as active in the tarot circle now, so I am not up to date about where we can buy this. Especially given that US Games tried to block the legitimate sales of this and the printing of an English edition for these remastered images. If you go to a channel called THE TIGER'S ABYSS, he might know more and able to help better. Thanks for watching!
Amazing! Is there a way to get this deck? I know I came late. I searched and did not find. I acquired the pocket size. I would love to have the standard version and some extra copies. Thanks for the video!
US Games might have prevented AGM-Urania from selling these, based on some loop hole in the contract they have as a distributor of OTO's images of the Thoth tarot and agent of its original publisher. I am not sure. OTO owns the images and they digitised the paintings in 2008 with the explicit intention to publish the more crisp and high def images in their original language: English. You might want to contact AGM-Urania through their website to check directly with them? Good luck!
I went to the site you linked and now see that at the bottom of the page is featured the English version deluxe deck and wonder how this differs from your premium edition. Is it just the size and fancy box and language or is the coloring different? Thanks, as usual, for all of your amazing detail, Anne
Sorry Anne I never received notification for your comment here and only saw this now! I hope you found the answer already but this is a special digitally remastered edition :) Writing to AGM directly might be the only way, or check out resellers on ebay :)
Hi and thank you for your lovely informative videos. I have followed the link you shared as I would like to get the digitally remastered copy but I am getting lost! You don't mean the gold edition? as I read a review saying that it was not the digitally remastered one. It's very confusing. I followed the isbn number for the deck but keep being lead back to the older versions of the cards. Maybe the gold box version of the cards you got have been sold out already? Thank you for your help. (PS I got the AGM Urania version of RWS on amazon.de as the ebay one had sold out. Thank you, Kate)
Hello. I am so sorry this video was made almost a year or so ago I think. I am not sure what their stock is like currently. I am also not sure what picture they are using now. So for me best to check their description. The other way is to email someone from the customer service or sales directly and ask them specifically for the 2008 digitally remastered version. www.tarotworld.com/ or www.koenigsfurt-urania.com/shop/tarot-orakel/tarot/aleister-crowley.html It is that one called "Premium" I think, because the box is gold, but I can't be sure since the descriptions are in German. Also I am thinking we can ask OTO directly. So sorry I can't be much help. US Games made sure these are not easy to get. Good luck!
@@NobodyHere Thanks so much for your help! I will do that. I was also enquiring from O.T.O. if the originals would be on exhibition again. They are in the Warburg Institute in London . Imagine seeing the real things!! From what I have seen the images were painted quite large, 20 x 16 inches and 11 x 15 inches. So I imagine that the reduction made some of the details too small to see clearly. If only they could reprint them in a *huge* size so one could meditate on them more easily. I have the urge to copy a few of the paintings myself to try it out! Thanks again. Kate x
For shipping? EUR 25 to ship to decks. Which is how much we have to pay for shipping any decks from the Northern hemisphere for us down here. They ship internationally :)
I must agree! Usually, I prefer stronger colours. But the definition here is so fine, that I don't mind a softer colouring. And if this takes me closer to the original artwork and paintings, it inspire me the more! If not to inspire, what are these images for? Well, that is the question I ask myself :D
I understand from what you said that the borders were intentional, but they are in my opinion awful, awful, awful and take so much away from the artwork. I had a deck tucked away in a drawer since the 80's and found it by accident recently, cut the borders, edged it in black and it's now a favorite. The colors pop, the artwork has been freed and I can now appreciate all the work that went into creating it in the first place.
It was trimmed images of this deck which finally attracted me to investigate the thoth more. So I agree. I have trimmed a copy myself, but it was a cheap US Games current edition which reproduction quality is not as nice in my opinion. I can't find the heart to trim my better copies and left them as is. After working just with the images, I am now back with the original bordered ones and am now able to appreciate the art, even with the borders intact. The titles are helpful when studying the images as they intended. The borders are very typical of the aesthetic of the day. So I do understand that they are not always in line with our modern sensibilities. Thanks for your comment!
The title of this edition has the word “original” in it and the images are direct reproductions of Frieda Harris’ paintings.
