Ekalavya Kalari | Kalaripayattu Training In Palakkad | Kerala | Malayalam Vlog

Kalaripayattu is an Indian martial art of Kerala and is known to be in practice for more than five hundred years. It is believed to be the oldest surviving martial art in India. Kalari is the place and Payattu means practice. Kalari is a temple like place where the training takes place on day to day basis. There are four types of Kalari Anga Kalari, Kuzhi Kalari, Taravattu Kalari and Pratistha Kalari.
In this video we are visiting a Kalari in Kunisseri Palakkad called Ekalavya Kalari running by famous Kalaripayattu Gurukkal Sumesh Subramanian. There are around 120 students are getting trained under him. There are multiple national level winners from Ekalavya Kalari trained under the guidance of Sumesh Gurukkal. This Kalari is a traditional Kuzhi Kalari. There are four levels of training Meithari, Kolthari, Angathari and Verumkai. Kalaripayattu differs from many other martial arts systems in the world in that weapon based techniques are taught first, and barehanded techniques are taught last. Kalari Marma Chikilsa is the another unique feature of Kalaripayattu. a Kalari Gurukkal is well-known as a vaidya or physician. Kalari Marma Chikilsa or treatment focuses on the ailments related to nerves, muscles, bones and marmas.
The main aim of this video is to show the importance of Kalaripayattu and the training features of Ekalavya Kalari.

A fascinating video introducing us to the ancient martial art of " kallari payattu"
As you rightly mentioned, this art is a vital part of our cultural heritage. Through your video you have sincerely attempted to raise the general awareness of all Malayalees to the significance of this ancient martial art.
The training given not only hones the body but disciplines the mind to an extraordinary level.
While this martial art is sanctified in countries like Japan, it is almost forgotten in the land of it's birth.
To preserve this traditional art, Kalari payyatu should be given the respect it deserves and be introduced into the school curriculum as a physical training subject right from the junior classes
The next generation will only thank those concerned , who will give this art the necessary thrust it needs, to implement such a valuable initiative.

I have a question that
Kalaripayattu is safe in hand to hand combat??
Because I think it is mostly based on weapons but today's time weapons are not allowed street fight and if we have weapon and other opponent have no weapon then it will be cheating but in Street fight we freedom ily use our hand and legs
You can see other martial art like Muay Thai karate it is very dangerous and powerful in hand to hand combat so my question is that is kalaripayattu also success in hand to hand combat or not???

Fighting without weapons is the final stage in Kalaripayattu.
Bare hand fights(called Kaithari) are a post-graduate course in Kalaripayat. Here an unarmed combatant fights with and without armed enemy and puts him down. Various activities like OZHIVUKAL [skipping], IRRAKKAM [stepping back], KAYATTAM [stepping forward], THADA [blocking], PIDUTHAM [catching] as well as blows and hits at the VITAL POINTS (or Marmmam) of the body, are the main features to this practice.
But to learn this one have to finish the other three stages called Meithari, Kolthari and Angathari.
