  • Mayurakshi Ghosal, a sophomore at DAA, explains to her fellow high school students the significance of building deep and meaningful relationships, characterized by a sense of trust, understanding and connection. She helps her audience recognize a fake relationship, that is often built due to the over dependence on social media apps like Snapchat and Instagram, and lists simple and easy-to-follow steps to turn those fake relationships into meaningful ones. Find friends outside of social media. Someone who was with you in a hard time doesn’t forget. Keep talking to them.

I think the Snap streak is definitely more of a Gen Z teen thing, but liking on IG and FB are kind of the equivalent. I've had people call me out for not liking something and it's like uhh, I have a life and don't spend all day scrolling this stuff...

I lost so many friends I made at school since the 4th grade just recently because of political views on Facebook . The most stupidest way to end a friendship is through social media talking about opinions. Sometimes I feel like something drives that ability to forget who your actually talking to and become a totally different person through the screen. Almost like it possesses you. Cause I swear it made no sense to argue after everything we’ve been through to end a friendship not even talking physically with each other about it. People used to discuss topics in person if it was that serious at family gatherings or on trips or whatever now people stay quiet in person, are on their phones most of the time and talk a storm up on social media as if that’s the real world. It’s bizarre.

I was in a relationship with a girl who was heavily addicted to texting and social media, and a ton of other apps.
In the end she chose her phone over me.
I lost out to a square piece of plastic. She was ever fully present when we were alone.
It was all about her phone. Was like having a 3rd person with us at all times.

Perhaps the rate at which ideas and knowledge are exchanged now - as opposed to just 20 or 30 years ago - has something to do with it. Sometimes I think taking a break from social media is a good thing.

Great job! This topic is one I've really agreed should be covered. It's so good to you as a student share it to your peers. Your perspective was insightful and very important to have come from you, about you and your peers. I've always believed this can be applied to adults and romantic relationships. Thank you very much & keep up the good talks!

Fake friends and real friends are a part of life, everybody goes through it of all generations, people are going to be who they're, and some people being value the same things, in the same way that you do, it sucks especially when you attract those kinds of people and you realize that you need to weed those people out and work on yourself. But people who based their friendships of social media clout, social status and everyday text messages to validate your friendship with someone is very unhealthy.

Social media is so addictive 😩, I wish people can go back to talking face to face and living a better life instead of scrolling a screen everyday and become more addicted looking at who has a better life etc Social media doesn't show us what's really behind so screen, u don't see the pain u only see the happiness in photos and videos.

I guess I’m a boomer. 😂 me and my buddy have helped each other move every time a family member needed it. Moving sucks, I know it, so I’ll do it with my buddy any time he needs it. Cause he does it for me. I’m not a yes man unless I know the investment is there. And it never has to be equal to mine. It’s about willingness.

I once had a 450 day streak with a friend. We both started working at Disney at the same time, and we had met in a Facebook group and requested to live together, which didn’t happen, but when I left Disney, we kept the snap streak going. I know I wasn’t using the snap streak to meaningfully communicate with her, it was my more competitive side that wanted to see how long I could do it, especially since I have ADHD and I have trouble doing certain things on the daily because I forget or get distracted. When the streak broke it was bittersweet because it was a task that I had managed to do everyday for over a year, but also a little bit of a relief because I didn’t have to do it everyday anymore. I’m still friends with this person, but I don’t really use Snapchat anymore. All that being said, the streak was the main reason I started using Snapchat regularly.
