A sometimes over looked asset to an individual grunt is the ability to warm up food and liquid. After hours or even days on end of exhaustive continuous combat operations, a hot meal to increase moral or heating up a nice cup of joe to increase your vigilance can go a long way in helping increase combat effectiveness. In this video were going to take a look at a few options Infantryman have as far as individual stoves for use in the field. We will primarily be looking at the Fire Dragon stove made by BCB International, but well also take a short look at the standard U.S. issued heater, MRE heater & pocket East German Esbit stove.

IF this hasn´t been mentioned yet:
    1. fill the canteen with about 400ml water
    2. place the can of food inside the water and remove the lid
    3. heat the water untill it starts boiling, let it boil. The hot water will heat up the food inside the can
    4. stir the food inside the can occasionally
    5. once food is warm - eat it right out of the can
    6. use the hot water left in the canteen to make yourself a cup of coffee
bonus: no dishes to wash !

Heating and eating out of a can is a last resort. The chemical preservative in the aluminum will leach into the food, it's not the same preservative that would be in the food. The can is not meant to be cooked.

    • @s4ss
      @s4ss 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

@@StevenTheAristolianNerd canned food is already cooked in cans when produced. That´s how you get the crazy long shelf-life. Any bacteria that gets inside the can becomes part of the meal.
Example -> th-cam.com/video/p40gaCou2Qs/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=ScienceChannel . I also don´t think that these cans are aluminum, usually they are steel.

I was a Sgt 1976-82. Did tabs for decades in the field ever since. Did an alcohol cat stove for temps 30f and below. The tabs or alcohol are great because you can light it and do something else, you don’t need to baby sit it. I’ve since switched to the Swiss M71 gelled alcohol can stove as my primary, with tabs as back up. It can be refueled with chaffing dish or sterno. The detachable pot stand can often sit on a back up can of your favorite fuel. C4 burns well, just don’t stomp it out. Hard to come by. If you want to get the most out of your fuel I suggest the following: Turn the cup opposite the stove so the flame goes up the side of the cup, not just the bottom. Paint your thin steel G.I. cup flat black to absorb more heat. Buy or place a thin flat piece of metal for a lid to trap the heat. You can get a rolling boil in about 20-30 minutes based on how cold it is. I took a spare canteen, measured up 4 inches from the bottom, and cut across the cup with a hack saw. Trimmed and sanded the lip of the plastic canteen. Now I have a plastic 2 cup container to drink out of. It with a small bag of instant drink , soup etc, all fit in a quart canteen pouch. Love the comment, feel like re-enlisting, lol. Great vid as usual.

I know this video is a little bit on the older side but I was just watching it and when you spoke about it being a lightweight option a little trick I got taught was if you get three long nails and put them in a triangle you can use that to hold up a metal canteen cup or mess tins and just put the fuel capsule underneath it and light it and it will do the same job if you’re really concerned about weight 👍

Tip: Bring along a piece of tinfoil to use as wind shield and to cover over the top of your cup when heating your water/food. on a windy day it can make a huge diffirence. To avoid the tinfoil to compromise your position, you can cover the one side that is facing Up/outward) with OD or black duct tape or similar. Two pieces of tinfoil doesn't take up much space and weight and can fit in anywhere in your gear.

I always enjoyed eating in British mess halls, but the first time I did so was in Umm Qasr in May 2003 coming out of Iraq, and I made the mistake of looking at the instant coffee and asking where the real stuff was. "Sir, this IS the real stuff," replied my British Army host. Point taken.

I appreciate it man! I gotta say though this is one piece of gear I got for free though. I had to edit out the story on how I got this stove because it was just making the video too long lol. In short, the story was I actually wrote BCB to tell them about the mirror falling out of their camo compact during training/use. I love their face paint but both Bruce and I's mirror both fell out of our compact during our training at 1 Shepherd. I wanted to find out if they designed it that way and if they did.... I wanted to tell them that was a crappy feature. My story was longer and more in-depth obviously but long story short the compact wasn't in fact supposed to do that, and after I got done throwing in my two cents about it they wanted to know if I wanted to check out their field stove since the British military uses it. Given my recent experience with Bruce at 1S using his alcohol stove, I thought the odds of this coming up were crazy.

    • @docholliday2364
      @docholliday2364 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Awesome odds on that one Brent but funny non the less. I am ex Brit military myself mate and my son is still serving so we have seen first hand how crazy some of our kit is, but brother we would get the job done Airborne Style. Keep up the great content you put on Gunny Utrinque Paratus SF.

I'm more of a Tasters Choice guy. My dad - who was USASF - had a whole pallet of the old C-rat cases. So when they needed to get used up when I was in Boy Scouts, I'd pack that. Those C-rats always came with the Tasters Choice. When I was an MP, I *REALLY* appreciated having extra MRE coffee packets, also Tasters Choice. YUM

I bought this canteen cup (with a lid) a few weeks ago and it works great on my real stove at home. I got it because I already have Nalgenes, which nest inside it, and apparently finding canteen cups with lids is hard for some reason. I got Brent's recommended stove in the mail today and I can't wait to try it this weekend, but I really like this cup. I also got a Nalgene pouch with an outer pouch more than big enough to hold the stove and the KABAR camp spork, so now I have a little cooking kit and water all in one place on my bag.

Great video, really good that you’re keeping your skills alive, and sharing them with all of. Even better is that you’re doing an excellent job of looking at options and alternatives. Governments seldom do that, at all, efforts such as yours may help soldiers in the future.
I had a former Ranger who worked me sell me what he used - it wasn’t cheap, but they are getting a bit cheaper, the Vargo Titanium Stove, a folding stove. With some inserts he had built, he was able to use an alcohol stove, Esbit fuel. the fuel tabs, and wood he found laying around. I’ve used it camping and it works pretty well. It folds into a pretty small package and being Titanium, it’s light. One interesting thing, it cools down really quickly after the heat is extinguished. It might be n interesting item to look at.
One thing about almost all stoves, the closer to the heat source the better the heating goes, which is why he had built the inserts.
    Very much enjoy your channel.

Looks like a good piece of gear. I like the gelled fuel and think it would hold up better in the field. I have two stoves that are like the esbit but bigger than the BCB. They are made of steel instead of Al. I've never seen another one like it anywhere. I bought them in the early 90s from a Ranger who said these were Special Forces stoves. Now I have to go out back and cook me up some nescafe in my canteen cup. Thank you for another good video.

Brent, I had an Esbit stove in my Amazon cart when you uploaded this video. I'd ordered a canteen cup for my Nalgene a couple days prior, and I was trying to pick a MOLLE pouch when I got the upload notification on my phone. Your endorsement and the wind shield were enough for my to delete the Esbit stove and order this from a seller in Michigan, and it arrived today. Either you can't comment a picture or I can't figure it out, but I love my new field stove and I'm very grateful for your recommendation.

Cool video. I had carried so far only on field training a WW2 german ESBIT folding stove with dry fuel tablets. Had always worked for me as far there is messtin or canteen cup, which for me is soviet army airborne combined. But more or less our guys have been switching over to jet boil. About which i completely agree with Brent0331 about space requirements. Anyway not to forget- i serve in National Guard and we typically dont have field training longer than 3 days. So the standarts and requirements are relaxed. Some guys manage to even forget taking canteens and messtins with them or either they consider them heavy :D and you have to share. Thanks for video.

Others here have mentioned tin foil, good advice. A lid makes a huge difference.
If you are putting a canteen cup on the fire dragon stove orient your cup so the handles sit on the same side as the little windshield, that way flames wont get blown onto the handles anywhere as much.

This looks like an improvement on the old Hexamine stove, yes Gas is clean and easy to use, jetboils are good but try getting on a flight wit gas canisters or using them in a cold environment,
Hexi stoves don’t have this problem.
Every soldier should have a stove like this.
The ability to make a hot drink or a boil in the bag meal in cold weather is a godsend
I am no longer serving , but I will get myself a fire dragon to keep in my kit for those days when I go out in the bush , it’s so small and convenient and won’t let you down .
I used hexamine for all of my military career, I tried a MSR Multifuel stove and a Has stove , but always had a hexi stove as back up

Great video and as they said in Hunt for Red October you must learn the ways of your enemies...in this case your allies as well. Good piece of kit to have as the Combloc countries thought of this ahead of a conflict minus the windshield. Its the littlest things which are more important in the field than others.

Whenever we wanted to bring to the field, any cans of ravioli, tuna, or our choice of instant coffee; our platoon sergeants made us rip off all of the paper labels, and then spray paint OD onto the cans & containers. We had a simple rule... If it ain't green & black, it gets thrown back.

During a JMRC rotation in Germany I found an esbit stove and used fire starters because there was no fuel tablets with it. Made coffee in the field when it was very cold during our February training exercise. I normally carry a optimus crux weekender stove in the field but I wasn’t able to fly with that. The esbit picked up the slack.

Nice looking stove. On the other hand I was taught way too many years ago to carry heavy weight Aluminum Foil along with my Esbit to use as a Wind Screen. My Esbit along with six Fuel Tabs fits in my Shirt Pocket.
My Field Stove is a Svea 123R. It fits into a Bag I can attach to any Pack. You can use White Gas or Gasoline in it and it will cook damned near anything in any Temperature. Yes it weighs a bit but to me the weight is worth it.
