Miata vs Viper at NASA Mid-Ohio Qualifying

    Turbo Miata "The Rocket" driven by owner Jeff "Drift" Diffenderfer, chases down a big bad Dodge Viper during qualifying laps on Sunday morning. What a way to start the day!
    "The Rocket" is a 2004 Mazdaspeed MX-5 and was prepared by Jesse Prather Motorsports of Topeka, KS. We took the NASA National Championship in 2010 at Miller Motorsports Park. Heat management was the biggest challenge we faced in sorting out this car. Making 270 rwhp, and tons of torque..now a wide body kit, and much wider wheels/tires.. 275 R6 Hoosiers. (Video is with stock fenders and R6 225). The turbo is a Garrett 24. Thanks for all the compliments. The Viper driver has improved a lot since this was recorded. Drift

    Miata is in no way a rice cooker, and the Porcshe 944's aren't either. RWD Roadster love. A car is a car, and it should be respected. Miata's are some of the most raced cars by amateurs in the world, so don't go calling it a rice cooker. RESPECT FOR DOMESTICS, IMPORTS (Honda's may not count in the race world), AND EXOTICS.

    Perhaps you failed to notice there are straights and curves on this track. Being competitive on a road course involves optimal speed on both. On this day the Miata was faster than this particular Viper/Driver combination.
    Nobody was taking any chances either. This is how we drive during a qualifying session where lap time determines your starting position for a race.
    And just what exactly leads you to believe the Miata is a $10k car? The development of The Rocket took 3 years and cost $80K.

    Viper driver can't read flags either 1:46 and 1:54. Next lap 4:00 sees flag and brake-checks everyone instead of slowing down on the next straight.

    How are Honda's not counted in the race world? They have several levels of NASA Honda Challenge classes, and numerous other races like Integra R Challenge and HFF challenge dedicated to the H badge.

    That viper must have a NJ/NY driver behind the wheel because he/she doesn't know how to get the F out of the way with all that traffic behind it.
    Kind of like those in the fast lane on a highway.

    With a 2380lb comp weight I was told 210whp for TTB.

    Excellent - now come on south so we can play at RA! Got a link to specs? Sounds like you running NT01s with the tire-talk?
    I see the same thing at RA - vettes/porsches slow in the corners holding you up, but fly down the back straight so you can't pass... then repeat cycle 1.

    so, i've never tracked but I really would like to some day.
    in a race like this, is your car completely vulnurable to being tapped/crashed into.
    if so, is it completely at your own risk.
    as in, the other driver doesn't have to pay for it?

    Horsepower is only part of the equation. What is a bit deceiving is the torque produced by The Rocket. At Mid-Ohio torque rules. Pulling out of all those turns with early throttle application makes it very quick. Miatas are famous for their suspensions too, and we've tweeked it with a full competition setup. Kudos to Jesse Prather for all his excellent work on the motor and suspension.

    the most important things in racing is torque and handling /road holding. very nice driving! do you use 275 hoosier to the front as well? i race amiata very similar to yours and use 275 rear and 235 avon slick at front. does the miata need so wide tyre at front? how is the haldling?

    Yeah,that kind of thing was frowned upon in my day. Might even get you black flagged for blocking. It was a good job by the miata,an FSDE with a turbo is def fun!

    WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT A 2200LB OVERTIRED TIN CAN W/DRIVER MOD WOULD BE FASTER THAN A 3800LB UNDERTIRED FRESHMAN. GFY

    Sad part was the viper didn't seem like it had more than 80hp over the Miata. Typical Dodge... bigger, louder, heavier, slower.

    What is faster, the viper. Who is better driver, we don;t know. Why? You can take more chances in a $10k car than a $100k car.

      Yeah...youneed to take you car to a race track....Any car...any track.
      The viper is faster on the straights, but the 2000 pound stripped Miata vs 3800 pound Viper and the corners go to the Miata every last time. That's almost a Miata with another Miata in the trunk! Normally race prepped Miatas have to add weight to make the minimum weight for the class. At the track you discover how fast a prepped miata is and how slow most other cars are.
