Great how to on the laying of cork. I used the liquid nail on both the cork bed and the track. I like it since it holds in place without weights or any nails.

Been watching a number of your how to vids and really good information. 2 items I would like to address, 1. Liquid Nails has a strong odor, found that DAP 230 either clear/or white will do very well with cork and laying track. 2. Cork roadbed is probably the best to use. My layout is setup outdoors (yes HO outdoors)!!!! cork will not dry out and crumble as quick as the rubber, and if you want to change or make a revision to your track plan easier to take up both track and roadbed. I will start posting some videos and would like you input on what I've done. Please keep up the good vids (WTC- Wash. Term. Co.)

I have used both cork and woodland scenics black. I find the woodland scenics difficult to use. It doesn't come apart like cork, it retains its curl from the box and doesn't lay flat.

and I found that using just silicone acrylic caulk in colors works great to hold it down.

Brilliant series, watch pretty much every video you do, but just one question.
Why only 2 main lines? Why not more?

g6butcher1 With the width of the end modules, curves would get tight as each line goes in, I thought about three but it would really cram in there and only be like an 18 inch radius.

Wondering what it would look like if you just painted the roadbed grey and laid the track on top?

Joe323 I hate to ballast, so this is what I have done. However I prefer a more mixed beige/grey color ballast than grey. Then sprayed black inside the rails to show leaked oil, and aged the inside and outside of the track with a brown sharpie to give it age, leaving the top of the track shiny as is. Trains run much smoother on track that isn't ballast poorly. I am awful at ballasting track. I also used different shades of green and brown felt to build my grass and dirt landscape along with adding rocks, bushes, and trees to give the landscape a wild appearance.

Yes I find ballasting to be a messy job and you are right trains seem to run better on unballasted track. My thinking was that the last time I rode the train on the northeast corridor it seemed as though the ballast was a uniform grey color so I was thinking why not paint the cork roadbed grey and separately paint the Rust on the track sides allowing some to dribble down from tie plates and rails unto James concrete ties and the road bed. Perhaps this would provide a fairly prototypical look without all the mess I may try it on a sample and see how I like it.

Joe323 If you are happy with your layout that is good enough. There is no need to please everyone, just please yourself. Some use cork, some don't use anything. Some use ballast, some don't. Some weather their rolling stock, some don't. It is up to you. This is what I like about the hobby.

    Very informative as always!
The switches part (tricky cut) could have used a bit more explanation IMHO
How much room do you keep for mistakes (purchased vs glued length)?

Should we wet the cork bed before use to make it more pliable? I have heard that the cork bed should be wet. Confused about that part. Thanks.

To avoid the centerline shift show the centerline in SCARM.

Did you consider using Woodland Scenic's black roadbed?

James Neidlinger Not really, I hadn't researched it so I stuck with what I know.
