    ✅ About jlwii2000:
When I started my channel I did not choose a catchy name because I did not think that I would be a major model railroading video source one day, so I apologize for the strange name. My channel has a variety of info about Model Railroading in many scales, primarily HO scale. I try to respond to everyone's questions to help them along with their journey. Overall, I hope my relaxed yet descriptive approach to modeling will assist those new and old in this great hobby. - James

I worked 38 years ant union Pacific Rail Road and jut recently retired , I worked on maintenance all of the years in Bridge dept. and on track maintenance , the reason they do not use concrete ties is that if the derail on concrete it will break the tie, but on wood some can be reused , just plugged and re spiked and also gauged and concrete you can not..

everything has to do with scale, if it's larger on the model railroad it's larger in real life thus the scale is off. code 100 scaled up to real life would be too tall to be realistic. You are probably right about rail height from base, but in real life rail is one height from base and that is best modeled with code 83. Thanks for the comment!

Just wonderful, I have been researching "ho scale craftsman building kits" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Piyaliyah Uncommunicative Preference - (search on google ) ? It is a great one off product for discovering how to build a model train railroad easily minus the hard work. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my neighbour got great results with it.

I'm building an HO scale layout, after switching from N scale. I had one when I was a kid, and my dad built it on Homasote board, which is really like a thick cardboard that is used as a sound barrier in recording studios. The advantage of using Homasote vs. plywood is that you can push a track spike through it with pliers, it takes paint very well it is a grey color, and it is easy to drill and cut even with hand tools. And it is very lightweight. And it does not break, though it will sag

Good point in the foam. They are not all alike. Especially don't get the type with a barrier attached. What you want us XPS type. It is sold as Styrodur (BASF) in Europe and in the US Owens Corning makes Foamular. Typically it is pink or green. Very carvable.

I use down to Code 55 for industrial trackage. This replicates the much lighter rail which is reused over the years as the standard main track weight of the rails has gone up. I like Code 83 for main tracks and 70 for secondary and yard tracks. Code 100 is used in staging.

What a terrific idea!! Too many people get frustrated diving right in, especially the beginners. I'm about to start my 10th layout, this one N scale, and like yours, sectional not modular.
You're spot on about 'extruded' styrofoam. Ask for it by name - the white Bally crap sucks for our purposes!
Experience still doesn't make perfection! I look forward to watching your series, and learning something new!! :-)

Depends if it's DCC ready or not. If not, some soldering skill is required. All you have to do is isolate the motor from the pickups (by cutting any wires, if it's a split diecast chassis, tad more complex), connect the red & black wires to the pickups & the orange & grey wires onto the motor. There should be a sheet that comes with the decoder telling you which wires go where

Great video. You are so right - it can be difficult to find someone on the net building up an entire layout from start and still documents it. I have a suggestion, which you proberly already know. remember to have the tracks on your modules cut on each end so that when you have to move again, then it is much easier for you to put them back together. I will try and find some videos from our module layout to send to you. Keep up the good work.

I used the white stuff, it works fine for what i need it to. But what i did do was remove that protective layering because there is no use for it, and the glue does not stick to it very well. I would have bought the extruded form board but apparently it is not available in my most my state/ or at least no where within driving distance. Great video.

My Uncle and I suggest if you want great working turnouts you should go with either Peco or Walthers Shinohara turnouts. We currently have the Peco and they work great. The Shinohara but have not tried it yet, but from what I have read on them they work great also. The Peco are quite expensive though.

I hear ya on that man! I'm lucky have a GREAT wife who's cool with me using the enclosed heated/cooled back porch to do my layout because it's 20' x 10' and I am going to do a BIG around the room with one side being 19' x 5' or 6' wide and the other side about 19' x 2' with liftout bridges at both ends. She's the best because she doesn't kill me when oops, the UPS driver delivers another O gauge diesel locomotive! Thanks HONEY!

um FYI unless it has changed recently for the last some odd years the code of the track was the actual measurment of the rail height from the base to the rail head. code 100 is .100 of an inch code 83 is 83 thousanths .083 it has nothing to do with scale.

It's not all nessesary but it gives it a realistic look because the ballast raises the track in real life and it also keeps the noise of rolling stock down

Hi James. Thanks for the years of teaching and your kind videos, helpful. Do you have preferences on Atlas,, Micro Enngineering, Walthers, Peco code 83 HO track vs. Code 100. (in flex track and/or the switches). Some say that Code 83 is good but may tend to derail more or wear more than Code 100. Atlas turnouts don't seem to be the quality they use to have, so may Peco would be better for turnouts. thanks for any advise or tips James. Love your tutorials. Andrew Walsh

IN CASE YOU ARE NOT AWARE, THE BEST TRACK TO GO WITH IS KATO, NOT BACHMANN. THAT IS TRACK WITH PLASTIC ROADBED. I LIKE PECO SWITCHES. ANOTHER WAY TO GO IS ATLAS CODE 100 TRACKAND CORK ROADBED. I HAVE HEARD WOODLAND SENICS RUBBER ROAD BED IS GOOD TOO., ALTHOUGH I HAVE NOT YET TRIED IT.

Hey whats up dawg! How was the move? Fun or hectic? I see you save your boxes. I do not. I threw out so many because it takes up so much room. I will have a hell of a time trying to find a box for the item I had in it. I do have three bags of boxes from back in the day when I USED to save them. Well enjoy the new hood. :)

code 82 is still too high to be prototypically correct. Code 70 is the more prototypically correct. However, in ho scale, code 83 and 100 are best used because they handle nearly every ho scale equipment produced today. The larger flanges of the models are needed to better stay on the track. Code 70 has a tendency to derail more easily than code 83 and 100.

hey jiwill2000 cool videos. did you ever think about useing floting fiberglass Ceiling Panels even know your layout is finish. cause for me on my layout i use Ceiling Panels and it work awesome. it thin flexable and easy to cut. and the e-z track lay smooth on it.
