I am writing a book on the history of the clarinet in 19th-century America, and a few years ago I ran across a newspaper notice of the 1897 concert on which this piece was premiered. I have wondered about it ever since. I have lots of information on the clarinetists who performed on the premiere: Léon Pourtau and Peter Metzger.
