Wow! What a find! So soothing. In terms of reconstruction, how close is this probably to Loeffler’s original?
Thank you so much! I reconstructed the score directly from Loeffler's manuscript, cross-referencing the autograph score with the hand-copied parts from the first performance in 1897. He was famously obsessive and made a lot of revisions to both documents (which I've tried to represent in my edition of the score), but what you're hearing is mostly the original score, before some large cuts were made. If you'd like to learn more, I discuss this in greater detail in some videos on www.graemesteelejohnson.com/loeffler-rediscovered (scroll to the bottom of the page).

I am so excited you have found this piece! I am writing a book on the history of the clarinet in 19th-century America, and a few years ago I ran across a newspaper notice of the 1897 concert on which this piece was premiered. I have wondered about it ever since. I have lots of information on the clarinetists who performed on the premiere: Léon Pourtau and Peter Metzger.

cool instrument but it seems kinda useless in an actual ensemble like you might as well just have clarinets and bass clarinets and if you need alto clarinets
Ah okay.... Mozart Gran Partita? Mendelssohn Concert Pieces? ... They're literally 3 of the Most important chamber pieces for clarinet (but there are much more), so yes you need it
Basset clarinet is required for Clemenza by Mozart. Also Mozart’s Concerto and Quintet. There are many 20th century works that require basset clarinet too
