These are very cheap to buy, and if you overload it, just plug in a new one, rather than have to open up your computer to replace the internal card, which is undoubtedly more expensive, as well as time consuming. 2. It is possible to buy a lead that has different size plugs at either end, making the adapter obsolete. The lead is no more expensive than the adapter. 3. Many laptops (particularly older ones) are very noisy. Putting distance between the connected radio and the computer may help, although the noise may run up and down the cables. It might be necessary to replace the cables with Bluetooth links.

I just did this for fun. Businesses who use professional setups for crosslinks usually have an existing radio system and want to connect some new users cheaply or temporarily. Instead of buying or renting a whole bunch of radios and having to get them programmed for their radio system they can use a crosslink and just get people to install a radio over IP app like zello.

Hi, is zello work (paid account) account needed ? I've downloaded the desktop app, but it seems I can't use the app without a network name which is a feature of Zello work
Nope. The desktop app is meant to be a physical workstation version of the app on the phone. I'm not sure what you did to get where you are, but all this setup is doing is relaying the audio input and output between the Zello desktop app on a computer and a physical radio. As far as the Zello desktop app is concerned, you're using external speakers and an external microphone plugged into the computer, (although obviously you're actually relaying the audio over cables to/from a physical radio).

have you tried to do a cross link from cellphone running Zello and using data to a two-way radio? Basically replacing the need for a computer in order to make things more portable. Instead of plugging the audio cables into a computer, you would plug them into a mobile phone.
ok they aren't selling it. I didn't look carefully at the link you posted. But nevertheless if someone posted exactly how to do it then I'm pretty sure it must work.
Hi, excellent video. I'll be setting this up in Australia. We have UHF CB 476.425-477.4125 80 channels 12.5kc seperation. We also have repeaters (16 channels). Power is 5w. I actually own a repeater GRF08 and will set up Zello for some black spots and local Rural Fire Service can use the phones through the repeater. Will also link another repeater VMD2 to cover wide area. One thing I notice about this method is that the impedance from the radio ext speaker and into the laptop mic input is critical in getting it working, you must have been lucky with your impedance match. Cheers

what was the version of that zello you were using? the recent version of zello (2.4) seems to have a bug on the mic. Vox renders useless due to mic issue/bug. (by the way, windows detects mic and works perfectly)
No, more like a gateway. It's not a repeater because when you talk into it, it doesn't repeat your signal back out at all. Only receives it and sends it over the internet
@@MultiRacing69 with DMR you couldn't do this on gmrs, but with a normal analog FM radio made for gmrs you could. I don't know whether it would be legal
Yes. you need cables with connectors that fit to your hytera. Maybe you need to do those audio cables. Find the connectors on some special shop that sells Hytera connectors.. or buy external mic for hytera and slaughter that for your project. 73 de santa
It could just be me, but do you have custom alerts set for Zello on your cell phone? The talk permit chirp sounds higher and the roger beep sounds more like a TETRA-one, instead of the standard Apollo 11-ish one. Also like the other Sepura sounds it uses. I'd love to know where you got them :)
Hah yes you are right. The ones on the phone are made to sound like motorola tetra radios, and the ones on the computer are made to sound like sepura tetra radios. I made them myself with audacity, just by finding recordings of the tones online and seeing which frequencies they are at.
radiosification Ah, cool. Could you give me some hints as to how to go about detecting the frequencies of a sound? I've tried generating my own sounds in Audacity before, but even the Motorola TETRA "beep" didn't come out quite the way I hoped it would. Wouldn't mind if you published the files somewhere, either, but I totally get it if you want to keep them for yourself :)
I usually use a program called spectrum lab to see the frequencies. Try using fade in and fade out to get them sounding right on the beginning and end of tones, otherwise you get a click sound at the start and end of the tone which doesn't sound quite right. You have to make the fade in and out quite fast. I'll create a video on how to do it in a few months and publish the sounds with that, after checking that they are all accurate.
The distance is not affected by the setup. Zello is cellular-based, so anywhere with a data connection you can use it. The physical radio's distance limits are whatever your existing physical radio network already supports. All this setup does is bridge the two.
I have a problem, we use DMR mototurbo with repeater system, in simplex mode I have no problem, but I can not do the transmission between zello and portable or mobile, will you have any advice? Thank you
This is not a reliable setup for serious applications. It is for fun only. If you want to have a crosslink for a proper radio system then you should not use VOX. Instead, you can find hardware which makes the radio transmit. Contact a business who is selling this type of solution.
You could use products like the ones on this page, but this is still not a very reliable solution. If you want a solution with high reliability then it is best to buy a radio over IP with gateway solution which is not using zello. www.radio-tone.com/rds01_shopcat.php?&usercat=2768&parentid=2768
may be it can help these simple circuit :s19.postimg.org/468v4xsyr/image.jpg if you encounter ping pong effect when transmitting with the repeater, increase the value of capacitor (with blue circle) ( map your ptt to middle mouse, don't use build in vox of zello) dy1lmz@yahoo.com
Awesome video, exactly what I was looking for! I would like to see if this can be done using the Hytera PD785 radios, because these radios use a different connection and I haven't found cables online that I can easily connect to the radio and the laptop...
Zello is internet/cellular-based. (Internet for the desktop app, cellular for the mobile app). As long as you have a data connection, the Zello portion will operate. As for the physical radio, the distance depends on your physical radio network. The one connected to the computer is helping bridge the connection between networks. As long as your other physical radios can operate with the one connected to the computer, that portion of it will work, even with the Zello portion through the bridge.
Yes exactly. If it doesn't have vox then you need to buy something external. I'm not planning on buying any of those devices, but if I ever do I'll make a video on it.
Well if you're already using chromebooks it's the most logical thing to do. It would be much harder for me to test it because I'd actually have to buy a chromebook first!
Standard radio operation rules apply. Amateur/license only Freqs will require a license. Analog mode, of course, does not require a code of any sort. I'm not very knowledgeable about DMR but if you want to use a talkgroup, then yes, you require a code. You can use this on any system where you are authorized to transmit and use VoIP gateways
Ground loop. When the ground on the mic side is grounded to the ground on the speaker side, it keys. The grounds are connected within your computer between mic and speaker.
There is a chance that those are analog radios but used xpr radios (you still get the same tpt with analog on xpr radios unless if you disable in cps). Companies upgrading fleet of radios with pre-existing license sometimes don’t update the license, meaning they are stuck on analog even with digital capable radios.

So if I plug in my tyt into my computer and cross link it to my zello and run it off either uhf or 800 on my xpr7550 or xpr7580? What about the range of the xpr radio? Doesn't it have to be within distance of the tyt? That's only about half mile isn't it?
question.. I am looking at rolling out zello at work. We might have a mishmash of Android phones and walkie talkies.. will this work? what are the limitations? We would like to have groups and individual talk selections .. apologies as I am new to this ...
This video is showing a crosslink between zello and a radio. I wouldn't use this for work, as I couldn't see it working reliably enough for that kind of purpose. It's just meant for fun and chatting to other people who have this as an interest. If you just want to use zello just on phones though it should work pretty much fine. Zello uses data though so you have to make sure everyone has a data plan for their phones.

Yes I am using two accounts
will this work when your pc only has one port for both mic and speaker?
I belive adapters are available
how to make ksun zello communicate with mobile with zello app?
what was the version of that zello you were using? the recent version of zello (2.4) seems to have a bug on the mic. Vox renders useless due to mic issue/bug. (by the way, windows detects mic and works perfectly)
That's unfortunate. I don't know which version I was using in this video as I don't think I checked at the time
it must be 4.75 version and 2gig Ram or up to get fast response
Did you have to sign up for Zello work for this?
Will this work on UHF? Greetings from South Africa.
Yes, it was on UHF in this video
So with this your basically using your computer as a form of repeater ?
No, more like a gateway. It's not a repeater because when you talk into it, it doesn't repeat your signal back out at all. Only receives it and sends it over the internet
Ok, is it only possible on HAM or could it be for GMRS too ? Because im trying to find a way to access through my radio which is a baofeng UV 5R TP
@@MultiRacing69 with DMR you couldn't do this on gmrs, but with a normal analog FM radio made for gmrs you could. I don't know whether it would be legal
Ok thank you for the info, and I believe it's probably not , somewhere in part 97 ruling their is probably something In there. I will have to look up.
Hi I tried now but when I use my mobile zello, the app in the laptop go signed out, because another zello is used. How can I do
i dont have radio nor did i ever tried crosslink but perhaps try to create two ids, and add each other up.
what about using a gp338 moto radio instead of the tyt md-380?
If that radio has VOX, then it should work
Is this possible with a Hytera PD665, or a Hytera MD785? Thanks
Yes. you need cables with connectors that fit to your hytera. Maybe you need to do those audio cables. Find the connectors on some special shop that sells Hytera connectors.. or buy external mic for hytera and slaughter that for your project. 73 de santa
Just tried adding your channel on zello, but can't talk/listen/activate without a password. Just a heads 👆
The password is digital
How much
It could just be me, but do you have custom alerts set for Zello on your cell phone?
I'll create a video on how to do it in a few months and publish the sounds with that, after checking that they are all accurate.
radiosification Thanks! Never thought about that. I'll experiment for a bit.
Looking forward to the video!

MTH800? And Zello on my iPhone? Possible or not😎
how far the distance that zello and HT can connected??
I will seek the solution, if I find it in experimentation, I will share it for future communications, thank you, greetings
You could use products like the ones on this page, but this is still not a very reliable solution. If you want a solution with high reliability then it is best to buy a radio over IP with gateway solution which is not using zello.

may be it can help these simple circuit :s19.postimg.org/468v4xsyr/image.jpg if you encounter ping pong effect when transmitting with the repeater, increase the value of capacitor (with blue circle) ( map your ptt to middle mouse, don't use build in vox of zello) dy1lmz@yahoo.com
Awesome video, exactly what I was looking for! I would like to see if this can be done using the Hytera PD785 radios, because these radios use a different connection and I haven't found cables online that I can easily connect to the radio and the laptop...
Hi how can I get the software ?
download it online
Sir can you give zello link of your repeater
I don't have this left on anymore. I just set it up for the video
is this connection consider a voip?what if the other analog radio is in the philippines and im here in japan, can we still communicate?
Zello is internet/cellular-based. (Internet for the desktop app, cellular for the mobile app). As long as you have a data connection, the Zello portion will operate. As for the physical radio, the distance depends on your physical radio network. The one connected to the computer is helping bridge the connection between networks. As long as your other physical radios can operate with the one connected to the computer, that portion of it will work, even with the Zello portion through the bridge.
this exactly what im looking for, thanks man
Can you crosslink anyother radios like this way? Let just ask lafayette micro 4 vhf radio?
If the radio has vox, and has a connector that allows you to get the audio then yes.
Ok if not have vox, you need RT-roI1/2, signalink or Radio Over Zello Controller + RT3. Make video about these.
Yes exactly. If it doesn't have vox then you need to buy something external. I'm not planning on buying any of those devices, but if I ever do I'll make a video on it.
I'm wondering: why it doesn't come the user icon on the zello app when tx, instead a little arrow pops up when tx on the channel. .
Not sure exactly what you mean. When you transmit to the phone you see the user who is transmitting. At least, on my phone it does.
Would be able to show how to do this with an XTS5000
Not really. I don't have one
Why not adjust your record and playback on the channel or the audio booster for that channel
how do you set the channel ??
Now i have all Google Chrome computers can you see if it will work on them Just a FYI you can now Download android apps on the chrome computers
Why don't you try it yourself then?
radiosification well that is a Short answer
Well if you're already using chromebooks it's the most logical thing to do. It would be much harder for me to test it because I'd actually have to buy a chromebook first!
radiosification ok thank you I will try in and let you know
so did it ever work
Do I need a DMR ID and call sign for this
Standard radio operation rules apply. Amateur/license only Freqs will require a license. Analog mode, of course, does not require a code of any sort. I'm not very knowledgeable about DMR but if you want to use a talkgroup, then yes, you require a code.
You can use this on any system where you are authorized to transmit and use VoIP gateways
Your TYT it's version 8200 ?
It's most likely TYT MD-380 UHF-version. He dont have TyMD380Toolz custom public firmware. I highly recommend that!
When I plug in both plugs into the radio (UV-82) it causes the radio to key up. Don't know why.
2001scoop, W6LDS that is normal
How do I stop it?
it should only happen once when you plug the cables in
Ground loop. When the ground on the mic side is grounded to the ground on the speaker side, it keys. The grounds are connected within your computer between mic and speaker.
any solution for this ? Thanks
Is this using Zello Business, or free account ?
Free
im having trouble with the crosslink it picks up the first of radio traffic but gets static and looses connection halfway through the call please help
Check out my comment, it may help you.
Excellent explanation .. and a very useful option to know.. thank you
This man is genius, can I use baofeng uv 5r for this???
No, if both mic and speaker are connected to a soundcard the baofeng would enter tx mode.
where to get those cables?????
Any big online shopping website that sells electronics
@@radiosification can i use simple AUX cable that i already have?
What do you think I am using? Come on man, use your brain.
Im looking for a supee cheap walkie talkie that works with zello please help
Ok, this will *NOT* work on a Baofeng UV-5R. only a TYT MD380
This work for analog ?
yes
Is that Motorola radio zello crosslink compatible?
@@lands1459 If you seek fine working, avoid any ch**a radio brand name starting with B
Boa noite. Funciona com aqueles rádios Baofeng? Grato.
@@charlesalves5541 I don't know why you'd comment on a video that's in English, in a foreign language and think I'll understand you
I now now how my school's bus radio system works. I thought it was CB but nope. DMR. They have the same keying sound as your Motorola radio
There is a chance that those are analog radios but used xpr radios (you still get the same tpt with analog on xpr radios unless if you disable in cps). Companies upgrading fleet of radios with pre-existing license sometimes don’t update the license, meaning they are stuck on analog even with digital capable radios.
Yes.can u pls show us...how to link a walkie talkie to our android phone. So that we can keep the phone and press the wlakie talkie to talk to our friends in a zello group in our android phone...means using zello on walkie talkie
This also goes well with me wanting to record from my Baofeng.
what is the maximum range?
Probably about the distance from the earth to the sun
So if I plug in my tyt into my computer and cross link it to my zello and run it off either uhf or 800 on my xpr7550 or xpr7580? What about the range of the xpr radio? Doesn't it have to be within distance of the tyt? That's only about half mile isn't it?
Does this require 2 different Zello accounts?
yes
