@kelseywilliams5002 I think it's more that gen z sees how hard gen x and millennials have worked and followed the "rules" and not be any further ahead than people who drift by. In the past hard work did get you ahead, nowadays hard work is stagnation. They also see people make way more money by thinking outside the box. Why would you want to slave and toil away in school just to end up drowning in debt to not be able to afford a house anyways when people make more money telling Dr. Phil to "Cash me outside" or selling their bath water or making furry art.
Not gon lie, as a Gen Xer, ALL 4 OF THEM are literally me depending on my current level of burnout. And if I don’t finish my hours during the day, after rest, I’ll sign in and catch-up. But I can’t just skip out on work. That doesn’t sit right with me.

The more you're paid, the more you feel like spending overtime at work. The more you're exploited, the least amount of effort you'll put into your job.

I retired in 2021 at the age of 51. Most of my Gen X friends are also retiring. Many Gen Xers decided poverty is better than one more minute in the rat race.
I made it to 55 when my pension was mature, then .. ZIP! out the door I went without a backward look shedding my work clothes all the way through the parking lot and drove home in my underwear and shoes. Fu*k not one more minute than I had to 🤣
My parents are late Silent Gen, and this is so true. 8-5 is just the bare minimum according to them. You work your butt off starting at 7:45 and don’t start shutting things down until 5:01 at the earliest. They worked like maniacs but made a good living.

I agree with you there. We need to work and earn money to live but life isn't just about working all waking hours and then die. Or even die from the stress and burnout of over working. I'd hate to be on my deathbed and know all I did with my life was work and did nothing else.
I can assure you, not all Gen X are killing themselves either. At the end of the day it's not the 'Gen' that determines how they do life and work, it's the personality and upbringing of a person.
So fun fact about working from home. There have been studies that say we work roughly 3 hours a day. I can confirm that is false. I work about 30 minutes a day and send about 6 emails and I play on my Xbox all day long. Here's hoping my employer doesn't see this comment.
How is this even possible without your boss or supervisor knowing you're not getting anything done? What type of job are you able to only put in 30min a day of work into and get away with it?
@estherthomas8872 Oh, I get my job done. Lol. When I actually need to do it, it gets done. But I have a lot of downtime throughout the day, which results in me spending a lot of time focusing on other things.

I’m Gen-X. I didn’t start out loving my job and worked like a dog starting out. Lived in a crappy apartment and drove an old car. What we used to call paying our dues. Now I love my job and company, my boss respects me and my time and my work ethic and I’m paid well with very good benefits. I worked hard, learned new skills and asked for more opportunities along the way. Now everyone thinks they deserve to start at the top without having to prove their worth. Like just showing up is a gift to the company. And I work for a big national corporation with high employee satisfaction ratings so I didn’t just luck into a sweet deal.
Exactly! Gen z is complaining about reality for every generation when starting out. They just expect to get alot for very little when they have very little to offer companies.
Gen X does not understand Gen Z and seemingly will never take the time to do so. They are the most arrogant generation. From our perspective you guys are the ones that seem to think you deserve everything. I’m a Gen Z father of 2 daughters, having 3rd in September. I work three jobs and do online school while my wife is home with the kids and does online school. We work very hard. We have gardens, make our own bread, and utilize thrift stores. We don’t complain about needing to start at the top and I don’t actually know any Gen Zer who does. What we are upset about is that working a 50 hour work week isn’t enough to pay the bills. We are frugal with our money. driving old beat up cars, living in a house built in 1843, and wearing the same clothes since high school. I don’t know what you’re going on about but we do hard things too and don’t expect to be treated like royalty.
It’s always the ones that are doing well that don’t agree with the reality of the situation. Many work hard and don’t get the appreciation or compensation they deserve. Things are unaffordable in many 1st world countries.
Exactly this you can’t just show up and expect high salary for not having done anything now all anyone wants to do is quit and leap job to job did that in my younger years didn’t work out I’m 31 finally making 50 grand a year and I regret not buckling down sooner but I also intend to start up a few small business ventures here soon hopefully
You should do generations reactions to getting sick at work. My boomer coworker was coming down hard with covid that nearly killed her, but she stayed at work, borrowed a sweater and a jacket and put a blanket on her head and sat there shivering trying to get her work done.
This is true. My boomer coworker is the same way. She never takes off even if she is sick. Meanwhile, it’s easy for me to take off especially if I’m sick.
@@ljones9841 It may have to do with that target to retire. They probably don't want to work another year or any more days than they have to. They get to retire in their early 60's. But rest and having a life is so much more important. But inflation is probably enforcing them to work longer than they want. Because retirement checks are not enough to cover a month of living expenses. When rent takes pretty much 1 month worth of your check, somethings wrong.
As someone who used to be an employer but am retired now, I can honestly say this is very true Melinnials would bitch about work all day and try to find a reason to go home early. Gen Z barely showed up for work at all and cried like a 2 year old when they got fired. Talking about how they didn't do anything to get fired. Exactly, not doing anything is what got them fired.

As a member of I’d say mid gen z, I will only go above and beyond for creative jobs. I’m employed right now writing music for a soundtrack (I have to be vague for legal reasons) and I literally asked my boss if there was anything else I could do. I now have extra work but that can only be good for me. The more time I put in, the better the quality of my music/the more music I make, which means more for my portfolio for future endeavors. Especially considering I’m just starting out in this field and don’t know if it’ll go anywhere or not, that’s important to me. I can’t imagine any other practical career having the same positives from working more than you’re paid for.
Lol mostly true! Millennial here and if I ain't got important work to do on a Friday, probs doing 1hr after lunch and then logging off to play video games or smth. However if a colleague I like (senior or junior) needs help I'll always provide some time. That can be something quite technical or even basic data extracting. I think if you create good relationships at work "even" gen-z's have also done this for me. Everyone gets busy once in a while on a Friday and if we can all pitch in, noone needs to work too much overtime. As long as this isn't happening all the time and someone feels they're getting screwed over. Remember people, companies do suck yes, but they're made of real people. If you keep the real once close (but not kiss assing), no it might not get you that promotion, but you might be able to help get your gen-z colleague feel part of the family, your millenials to the pub earlier, or your gen x'ers to the concert and get that in return visa versa one day!
My millennial dad has an app on his laptop that makes his mouse move around, so it makes it look like he's working when he's really not, because his boss can see if his mouse has moved in the past 20min
I understand that is supposed to be a joke but it is very accurate. being a millennial, raised by baby boomers and older generation xers I have more of the work ethic of a gen x / baby boomer. I struggle every day to drag my nephew's girlfriend to work with me, we reset shelves and it's the most mundane work, I'm the Lead and she's below me. Let me tell you how painful it is to get her to wake up in the morning and to just get motivated.
I got to the point where I just realized I would rather be broke and homeless than have to wake up drag myself out of bed to go somewhere I hate every day.
They call us lazy but i bet if we were in office instead of old mfks we would make the economy better and with better jobs that have more morals and stablility that keep employees and make people wanna work again. Same mfks who wont give us a raise and are greedy are calling us lazy. Wanting a living wage and even with extra benefits is not asking a lot.
Nah it describes me well I usually fall asleep or chill in the bathroom whenever I can idc about work as long as I make enough for food and paying my share of the rent it’s all good
I think it relates more to the stereotypes of each generation and not about the individuals. I know plenty of workaholic Gen Z in the US. I'm a workaholic millennial.

For gen z it's the uncertainty of the future. Previous generations could map their future and know they'd be ok. Things change a lot faster know than they used to. We were born in the time of flip phones, and now entering adulthood with vr and everything is automated. Markets are competitive and you're not guaranteed anything. Even going to college doesn't guarantee you'll have a job in what you studied. We don't know if we'll ever be able to buy a house.
That's not true.

Everything is expensive as hell, even eating shit food is expensive now. Houses in my neighborhood have gone from $300-500k range to $1m+. The world is very digital now, and everything feels so artificial. Social media puts more pressure to be better, have all these material things and have a high social status. So, many don't think it's worth participating in this lifestyle
True, but all generations go through hard times. I'm a Gen X, and I've been through it all--been broke many times, job loss, etc. However, the Boomers made out pretty damn good.
