Exactly. Even though I am not from USA I still witnessed the same thing from my parents and when I started working myself. The more you do, the more they expect from you and the more work they will give you. But they will not give you more money for overtime or more time off. And in the end it is you who is overworked and underpaid. Most companies take what they can as long as they can. And then they replace you with a blink of an eye for someone who is less capable and less experienced but who asks a bit less money than you did. And they see it as a win. So no, I am not working overtime for free, my time off is my personal time.

@@judyperri9496not true. we just know that we don’t matter to corporations and even the hardest workers will be let to drown if it means the company gets a dollar. The 2008 financial crisis was huge for most of genz in north america.
Besides it’s not like the money i get from work goes far, might as well have fun and enjoy myself. because once i get home, it’s hard to be happy when i can’t afford to hit the same financial milestones boomers did. I remember me working in this office job, 19 years of age, and I was about to take my Laptop with me to finish some stuff up. And this old engineer about 55 years old said: "You have worked 8 hours, leave that thing here. If it needs to be finished it can be done tomorrow, because free time is free time, go home and relax". And that is exactly what I am living by now. 😌🙌 So my working changed uttely, I give 100% at work and 0% out of work, it it needs to be done so bad, do it yourself or be patient and ask me tomorrow.

Makes me think of the lady that got sent an email at like 4:57 on Friday and her day ended at 5. She didn't respond, obviously, because a normal person is signed off 3 minutes before the end of their work week; and then at like 8:14 the next Monday got a "I emailed you 3 days ago" follow up when in reality, it had been sent essentially 17 "work minutes" before. And some people were siding with the idiot who thinks an email sent 3 minutes before the end of the work day requires a response. Sorry, but at 4:57 pm on Friday, if it can't wait until Monday morning, you call the person, ask very nicely and offer them overtime. Otherwise, it gets handled on the next business day. No exceptions. And I'm sure somebody will be all "you'll always be poor with an attitude like that." But I'm not poor and make six figures. Go back to your moms basement.

Oh lord, my mom had a boss like this. If my mom had something come up on her end outside of office hours, she didn't hear from her until the next work day...in the afternoon. But my mom goes to bed at six so she can be to work at six and her boss repeatedly would try to contact her outside of work hours as late as nine. I remember because she had sent out the text to my mom's work phone and when she didn't answer in five minutes, she called until it was picked up.
So if my mom tries to contact her boss over a staff shortage and that's not an emergency when you don't have enough people to cover your department, what short-of-a-natural-disaster are you calling her for? And no, it wasn’t COVID.

I think that with many of these generational and work commitment videos, we have to remember.
    1. Many of our older family members worked for a single company their entire lives that took care of them, while we have companies that pretend to be our "family but will lay off half of the company at any moment.
    2. Many of our older family members were only required to work 40 hours, meanwhile we millenials, gen z, etc, etc, are basically penalized if we don't work 80 hour work weeks and stay at work at 10pm an go to all the BS after work functions, and the worst part is there is many times no incentive to work more, because you aren't paid hourly but salaried.
    3. Our parents and older generations were actually paid properly to account for the 40 hour work week and company that actually valued them.
The younger generations realizes that there's no point working more than the 40 hours required, they aren't being paid more, and they know they are expendable regardless if they do a good job or not.

Hve a lot of jobs in your work history, it shows you have some sort of problem. If the company you are applying for thinks you have some sort of problem, you will be the last picked.
Then you will bitch and moan and play victim, when it was you that did it to yourself.
So no, zoomers dont have the correct attitude. I have tried that before and instantly pissed off the boss. Instantly got put on shit duty... instantly got hours reduced because others were more productive... pressed into a position where i either quit or got fired. WHen i really needed the income.
So no, you dont do that.

@@kibatsf wow that was profoundly stupid. Have you heard of the productivity pay gap? It’s a scholarly article, it says that despite humans constantly growing in productivity wages have remained stagnant. Also if you’re working a at a Starbucks drive thru, it doesn’t matter if you had a really busy hour, your wage doesn’t increase for being more productive. So no, the more you put in doesn’t equate to: the more you get.

I enjoy my job and sometimes choose to come early or stay late. But I always make sure that it is known that this is a gift, not an expectation. When I leave right on time I always loudly and happily say goodbye to everyone in the office. We can change the culture by showing that we are not ashamed of simply doing what is asked

I tend to get asked to do overtime fairly frequently and honestly I don’t mind too much because it’s paid, but what gets me is when it’s last minute. There’s been times I’ve already clocked out, got my coat on and about to go out the door, and I’m suddenly asked to stay for a few more hours. I’ve already mentally checked out of the shift, I’m excited to go home and relax 😭
I’m also one of the few handful who will actually do overtime which gets annoying in itself. Would be nice if everyone did their part 🤷‍♀️

I respect your willingness to do more with pay. However, those who put in their 8 hrs, and choose not to work more, are equally doing their part. I think it’s poor planning or foresight on the part of whoever thinks it’s okay to pull you back in after you’ve clocked out already.

So true, while there are definitely some lazy entitled brats in my generation, but we all know this idea of becoming a slave and working your way up a ladder just doesn’t exist anymore.
The yearly 3% pay increase doesn’t match the increase in cost of living and the second a more senior position opens up, they bring in someone external rather than promote someone internal.
It’s created a culture where you’d be foolish to do more than what’s stated on your job description. Just work a job for a few years then leverage the experience for a better job elsewhere for 20%+ more pay.
And if boomers think their generation had it all figured out, why are they relying on pensions and retirement schemes funded by taxes? Shouldn’t their perfect system have earned them enough to last until they die to not be a burden on the current working class?

Gen Z and I know my limits. I won’t work doubles or give myself not enough sleep but I do pick up extra hours for the extra money (hourly pay). Best believe if I was salary I’d have more strict boundaries. Life is not about working but I do understand it’s an important part to be able to live comfortably. Hopefully future generations realize this too

I’m a millennial, and I’m glad that gen z is starting to realize that companies don’t give a shit about their time. It’s taking us too long as millennials to come to the same realization. I’m just sick of people putting down the younger generation for because I’m not lazy in the slightest, but there’s got to be a limit. And good on gen z for making one.
Time is the most valuable thing, and the one thing we cannot get back.

She's very flexible with me, when i need days off, or when i need to work from home because i always work over. And i every year i receive a good raise. In fact, i just purchased a brand new home recently. We had a millennial who just wants to work 8 to 5, and refuse to do anything that is not "what's he's hired for"..he just got fired last year. My point being is... Hardwork pays off....

I hope this happens in software development. People treat developers like work mules. I’ve had a few days working 9 am - 5pm and then LITERALLY 9 pm - 4 am the same day for production support. And still have to work the next day. I’m only 2 years in and if this keeps up I’m leaving the field. It’s so bad for your health. Maybe if I was making FAANG salary but even then idt people should be worked to their mental and physical limits. Other fields do that too like nursing which is even worse imo,
