went biking with my friend on a new trail. he was pretty new to biking and at one point just went too fast. i was going extra slow because the trail was made crappy, it had sand spots, and way too damn hot that day. north carolin ain the summer is dreadful. moving back north soon.
anyways as soon as i noticed he was gone, i hard him crash and felt the thud on the ground. i also heard a pop noise that i thought was his bike hitting a rock. it was his collarbone exploding. he now has a metal plate in there and permanent damage that will affect him forever.
the trail had a retarded bump on a little downhill section that completely seemed out of place as it interupted the flow completely. his head was down as he flew down it so he didn't see it. horrible designed trail, typical of north carolina.
so another tip is not not fly through a new trail and always look ahead at all times. scan the whole area so you can anticipate your actions.
to this day i feel bad since i got him motivated to start biking.

I return to MTB 3 months ago and last week I've ride 200 km with 3200m of elevation. You guys have no idea how GNBM videos have helped me to improve that fast. Thanks a lot.

Wish I would have seen this earlier. I've been riding for a couple years now and you kind of figure these things out the more you ride. That's why I love going out. every time I get smoother and faster.

Thanks for putting together these videos! I'm a 38 y/o rider that only started riding 5 years ago. Built myself a hardtail, and about 3 months ago picked up an older 2006 GT i-Drive 5 bike. Have since upgraded it with many parts that you have suggested (shorter stem, good wheels & tires, newer suspension. Probably my biggest issue right now is still trying to get the bike to manual, and to also conquer my fears. Too often I panic when going down a steep section, go on the brakes, and end up in a much worse case than if I just rolled down it.

Went out for a ride this evening on a trail I hadn't been on before. It was a 4.5 mile crushed gravel road around a big lake. Punishing uphill climbs, but breakneck downhills....
..especially when I don't realize that at the bottom a hill I'm barreling down at 28 MPH, the trail makes an abrupt 180 degree turn right beside the lake, and I'm headed straight for the drink. Managed to get the bike stopped before going in, but only just - maybe 6 to 8 feet or so from the water. Scared the dickens out of me!

Being too mellow is a good one that I'd imagine is often overlooked. I had this happen yesterday on the trails in a similar situation in your video, only when my back wheel got hung up, I went to step off to the left and ended up OTB off the singletrack and down the mountain. Here was a case where more speed would have done me better than taking it slow. Needless to say, I learned my lesson. Thanks for the tips as always GMBN.

Great video (maybe the best so far), I got some answers about what I am doing wrong but I couldn't figure it out by myself. I have to repeat to myself "don't pull on the bars don't pull on the bars" Moving body weight correctly has a huge impact on riding.

I've been watching these videos and that, along with my proficient brother behind me on occasion (generally shouting "pedal!") has made a large difference in a short time. I only get to ride about 6/7 times a year, but now have the confidence to hit red sections at trail centres as opposed to blues. Thank you!
One thing: equipment. Wearing appropriate shorts, trainers and riding a decent full-sus bike has been a big thing re fatigue avoidance and limiting cramp. Maybe this is also something to be mentioned in a video. For example, where I was riding an upgraded 2006 Kona Lavadome (a decent bike, but heavy and without a dropper post) I'm now riding a Norco Range - hence less fatigue. Add to that trainers that prevent movement of my feet and shorts that allow for movement without bunching/slipping means that drop-offs/manuals are easier to pull off.
Thanks again - I'm enjoying my riding far more now than at any time in my life before!

I came off jumping a nice bump on a track. I can see how I made the mistake.I made my pumping action too much with the bars and too little with the body weight, resulting in the front wheel dropping with my weight too far forward (the rear wheel probably kicked up aswell) and landed with slightly twisted bars. Normally, I could handle a heavy front wheel landing, but the pea gravel ( a delightful feature of West Australian single tracks!) decided otherwise. No broken bones but a very sore shoulder and another dent in my helmet. Thanks for your great MTB tips.

thank you someof those principles apply to riding horses, when used to ride I had theproblem of leaning forward which increases the liklihood of falling if a horse stumbles or goes over rough terrain, if you sit back over your hips keep the feet underneath you like your straddling you aer more balanced and yea dont want to forget get those heels down, when going into a turn you must stay upright as well whena horse is doing tight turns (like barrel racing) so these principles you mentioned I understand. maybe I will be able to try them once I get to bike riding again when the weather warms up (i am a fair weather rider newbie) I wouldlike to do some easy trail riding too, learn how to negotiate those roots and rocks and uneven ground too.

Ok when riding technical winde trails I find myself and my arms locking up making it difficult to turn. Sometimes I'm braking to turn on sharp corners. I'm putting it down to lack of confidence in heading into that corner fast.

I personally like clips, mostly cause it's saved me from more than one foot slip in wet situations, but I'd recommend practising clips a lot before you go on a more difficult ride. It kinda sucks when you crash, so get used to "popping out of the pedal" aha.

I hit all 10 mistakes! I am not comfortable yet on body weight transfer, I always think that I am going to crash, there's this narrow trail and there these two trees that I have to go between and I always stop and walk my bike, feels like one wrong movement would catch either handle bar and take me down, I also bottomed out my pedal while going over a downed tree, I guess I have to keep both pedal level

Just some comments on the seventh point. When cornering you recommend leaning the bike more over than yourself, placing yourself ontop of the bike. If you hit something that makes your bike change direction in this position you will leave the bike and fly straight ahead yourself. You will also roll the tires over to a side where there is little to no grip (almost on the side wall). And how come the motor bike riders tend to force them selves on the inside of the bike, keeping the bike as vertical as possible.
Any comments here would be interesting and maybe clarifying :)
Thanks for a otherwise good video.

    • @TheRiderseventy7
      @TheRiderseventy7 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Christian Jensen Motorcycle tyres on tarmac generate much, much greater amounts of grip than bicycle or dirt bike tyres do on dirt. This means the speeds the motorcycle can corner at are much greater. The high speeds that a motorcycle can travel though a curve at generate enough centrifugal force to act like one of those playground merry go rounds that you see kids fly off when they spin too fast. The rider leans off the inside of the bike to, a)prevent these forces from throwing them off the bike, b) to counter these forces that are trying to get the motorcycle to stand up, and c) keep the bike on the fattest part of the tyre, particularly when exiting a corner. Dirt bikes and mountain bikes don't generate enough grip for all that (except in berms), so you have room to improve the bikes grip by increasing the downforce on the tyre by getting your weight above it.

Nice Video Thanks my question is about dropper posts and what position you use them in different situations and how low should your seat go to help get your weight to the back of the bike over your seat i love these videos thanx...

Mistake I'm making is with gearing properly. I am newer to MTB. Am now completely comfortable with easy trails and have graduated to intermediate. I bike forested single tracks with decent inclines/declines. I am getting better with changing gears while on the trail when it comes to inclines. My issue is not changing back to a higher gear (hope I'm saying that right) on the descents and in between. So when I come of the descent, my bike has to slow down so much in order for the pedaling to be in line with the gear that I lose any momentum I had. I will get to the next incline and tire out. Am I supposed to immediately change my gears out of a descent to a higher gear so I don't lose momentum? I thought you had to be pedaling to change gears. I hope that made sense.

    hey
I have a question, how do i whip with my bike? and what should i do when I land on the ledge of the landing after a jump? It would have been nice if you would make a video of you were you answer my questions and explain.
