In this week's reaction video, I take a look at the Avril Lavigne controversy! I examine the theory that a vocal change in the performers style is supporting evidence of her death and then replacement (by a different person!). Did Avril get "replaced?" Is it a body double? Is the singing really that different?

A point that should be made; she uses the brighter tone on ALL albums. Easy explanation: she was a teenager pushing against the label wanting to make her a pop star. She was touring with lots of boys and punk artists at that time, and was trying to fit in. She settled back into her natural voice around 2005-2006.
I also have videos from her in 2001 before her first album. She uses the brighter tone. It was just teenage angst!

Aside from the original Avril "darker" tone, her "s'" sounds always had the lazier "sh" and "ts" sounds, in both singing & speech... VS contrasting performances with a very crisp clean 's' sound instead... (eg: 1:33 vs 1:39). It was this inconsistency in both pronunciation of words, as well as shift in tone, and the way it kept alternating in various performances, which first had me curious... or should I say 'curioush'....

Isn’t it also her speaking voice that’s different and more squeaky and not just her singing voice. Add it all together with the signature change, nose job, sudden embrace of pop music and dresses and what you have is either a manufactured artist or a replacement. I’m not sure its a different person but rather a remoulded artist. Avril originally appeared to be a legit artist but perhaps she was always a product. The update to that product caught her original fan base out and they have been trying to explain away why the version they loved is now gone.

Your voice changes all throughout your life. Go ahead, record yourself every day and you'll hear the difference.
Sometimes when people are nervous they tend to make their voice deeper or higher. Avril is a shy girl,l so this could explain why her voice is not always the same when she talks. In interviews, she talks way lower than she does in behind the scene or some kind of vlog videos.

I think a lot of people think about this theory because her voice has changed, not only when she sings but also when she talks. before 2004 she had a fairly low voice and then she became loud. In interviews she says things and from 2004 onwards she says the exact opposite by talking about her personality. Sometimes she seems to have doubts about things in her life before 2004 and it takes her a while to respond by looking around for suggestions. Now I don't say I believe 100% but doubts arise because of these things. Because a person who wrote and sang a song with a certain tone, even if she learned to use a different pitch, would still sing it as it was originally in my opinion, she wouldn't change the musicality of the song just because she learned a new way of using her voice. There are a lot of things and details that make you think, but unfortunately there's no way to know the truth either...

@J. O. I think she sits at that "high mezzo/not quite a true soprano" spot. But that's probably from lack of training. Katy Perry, until recently!!, does the same thing. Lower larynx position which means a lower secondo passagio. And straining to reach notes below A3. I understand she wants her tone to be rounder and darker but she really should embrace her light lyric soprano voice. I can only imagine what her vocal folds look like.
But yes, I agree. She's a soprano who forces her voice type to be something it isn't.

The thing is : your voice changes all throughout your life. Go ahead, record yourself every day and you'll hear the difference.
Sometimes when people are nervous they tend to make their voice deeper or higher. Avril is a shy girl,l so this could explain why her voice is not always the same when she talks. In interviews, she talks way lower than she does in behind the scene or some kind of vlog videos.

and you will see how her voice was looser but muddy in early days, but then grown tighter and clearer recently. which is a reverse engineering in nature that's highly unlikely to happen unless it's simply a different person.
I'm gonna vote for it being a double and let Avril stay in my memories

She sings it completely diff tho...its like a diff song, point of the song is the sound being darker not all poppy...so she should try and keep same vibe...i get she is older and stuff but she deff got bright and glowy compared to emo n stuff from b4...maybe she did change we all do but she will obv have a new fan base since her sound has changed.

Right...Because Avril is *SO* important (don't get me wrong, Avril has been my queen since I was 4) that instead of saying Avril is dead, they have to replace her... If she was...
I honestly only heard about this like, a week ago...

I still find it very difficult to accept that my voice is not as powerful as I would like it to be. I have sung for about 8 years and I still get angry because my voice goes naturally from belting to mixed. :(
I just found your channel and I love your videos! I'm going to check all the screaming and belting ones, thank you very much for sharing them

I sometimes go mindlessly to mixed voice too. Check her vocal compression exercise on her warmups playlist, it's really good and it helps.

      @@lormill4851 thanks I will!
I'm a soprano, do you know how high my belting should go? I feel it isn't too high (that's why I kinda dislike my mixed voice).

    • @lormill4851
      @lormill4851 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

She has a video on voice types and ranges, too. I have some idea of overall range, but not belting in particular, so. When you can watch a professional, I think that'd be better. But I know there's a n app called vocal pitch monitor, which is actually really helpful to determine all your ranges.

Auphorium I think it's kinda good that you have able to develop your mixed voice because that means that you don't trouble in transitioning between your connected registers, also mixing your voice will help you hit high notes effortlessly rather than depending and pushing your chest voice/belt higher..

Wow !!! Great topic...I was just telling my friend about my voice when I was younger ! When I started singing from age 12-15 my voice was heavy and dark and much more of a Baritone. Now that I'm 26 my voice is a lot lighter than heavy. I can even hit higher notes and hold them. I know in male singers it can be the total opposite where as a younger man may have a higher voice. Then when he get's older the voice becomes deeper, and heavier but my voice is the total opposite. Sometimes I miss that heaviness sound because there was a lot of power there lol. I still have the power but that sound was bad ass for a 15 year old. I love Avril btw !!!!

Corey Taylor from Skipknot voice changed dramatically over the years but no one thinks he's a clone.
    Why? Because he's still rocking.
People are just mad that Avril grew with the curve she was given. Especially after everyone kept saying she wasn't punk to begin with. Make up your minds.

If she had been replaced the vocal coaching could have gone either way. So... you'd think her imposter would have been trained to sound closer/identical to 2003 Avril.
Also... keeping up with whoever's trending would influence your sound. Another hugely successful Canadian songwriter (whom would have been a big influence on Avril) is Alanis Morissette. Her look and genre changed drastically as well after "Jagged Little Pill." Now, in 2003 Alanis wasn't exactly trending. But what was..? SEXY that's what. Britney, Shakira etc... but more importantly pop music. But keeping up with the Jones's and perfecting your craft takes time.
Avril is smart, and a brilliant song writer (which makes me proud to be Canadian) and the 2003 Avril was no exception to having sex appeal, she could pull it off if she wanted to make that transition.
Obviously this would have been a big move for her to transition from punk to pop - with losing fans being a very likely scenario, so she had a tough decision to make but ultimately decided to "Let Go".
Punk music has punk followers and what do punks do...? They rebel. The realization that Avril is a follower and not a trend setter leads her fans to get upset, start rumors which leads to conspiracy theories.
But you do what you gotta do to keep up and stay current. This whole conspiracy thing is keeping her current as well. It's very creepy and ridiculous, but it's not exactly negative... it's mysterious and intriguing. If everyone just accepted Elvis's death then would he be trending with a hit movie in 2022?
All the great ones have conspiracy theories. Again, I think Avril is smart and realizes this, hence why she just laughs it off and doesn't comment much either way.
Personally though I don't think her music has changed much. Style (yes) music (no). Those who like Avril's music should be the true fans and come to the realization that it's still her, working hard, contributing, and making beautiful history for our ears and souls.

If you listen to the original recording from Avril's first album it's in that same voice as in the 2007 concert. Now, when I first saw the video for Head Above Water I said "that is not Avril". It doesn't look like her at all, however, I do not believe and have never believed the conspiracy.

Been doing music since age 7 I can clearly tell you there are two different voices. You can see the difference majorly in her eyes Avril's are blue and Melissa Vandella's eyes have a greener tint. There's much more proof out there.

Can you make a video comparing tarja turunen in her early years as a singer against now, i guess she sounded better in her early years, she still a powerful voice but i guess she use her head voice more clean before, well i don know much about singing techniques and i dont know how to explain it, but maybe if you listen to her before 2004, and after 2005 you would notice the change.

that’s why people want to believe more that it’s not her, because it was those unique low frequencies that won their hearts, what made her stand out + her cheerful character, confidence mixed with shyness, body light as a feather, jokes with jumping on others' backs, when she sincerely laughed at how Evan climbed onto a mount on stage during a performance and much more, which is why any video with her was cooler than the TV series Absolutely not what we can observe after those years
oh and it’s also worth mentioning her amazing band, which also influenced her
