- Is the design & build of the Fastpack 40 backpack good for lightweight/ultralight backpacking and fastpacking as advertised?

From what I can tell the Mountainsmith Zerk looks like a better option if I was to replace this bag.
Thank you so much for such a great review. It really helps a lot.
Great review, thanks a lot man!
Enough to kill the idea of this pack dead in the water for me. Really like the review style, I’ve read the sales pitch on their website - don’t need a reviewer repeating it back to me. Give me what drives you up the wall, so it doesn’t drive me up the wall too! Good stuff here
Glad it was useful information - that's the point!
Thank helps a lot 👍
Thanks man.
Good honest review. The zippers seem like an after thought. Also agree with you on the Mountainsmith Zerk. Any feedback from UD on this review?
Sometimes less is more. I don’t expect to hear from UD 😂
Honest review. I'm still testing my kakwa 55 so always curious what other UL packs are doing well.
A few of my friends have the kakwa packs. Seems like a pretty good option.
thanks for saving me money and time!
Have you looked at the new-ish MEC Serratus Pace UL40? I picked one up with some leftover gift cards and looking forward to giving it a try for quick summer overnighters.
Hi Dave, I have looked at it. I'm not 100% sure which pack I'll be using this summer but that one is on the short list. Price is pretty good...
What's your go to bag for ultralight/fastpacking? I have the older 30L version of this bag and was very unimpressed with it.
If I was going to buy one today it would be the ms zerk. But normally I just use UL packs - about 10 years with a golite jam and 4 years with a northern ultralight sundown. I definitely like the running vest aspect of the ud pack, and I’ll use it until it falls apart.
What is your take on the new Skyline 30 from Outdoor Vital?
It looks pretty good!
…and THAT’s why I’m selling my UD Fastpack 40. Kane… what are your favourite 40L light weight packs?
I don’t have a pack that I 100% love right now. The new HMG Waypoint looks interesting though.
Ultimate direction's team didn't seem to understand that simplicity is more valuable than gimmicky features.
30l versions are on sales so it might be worth it, but at full $180-200msrp it doesn't seem like an ideal choice
Tried and true K.I.S.S. always applies... gear that is designed to be modded with features tends to do nothing well. That side zip along the roll top is awful 🤣 All an all a shame because the harness is soooo comfortable!
@@KaneDoesOutdoors I'd really like a basic roll top vest style bag that has no zippers, no daisy chains, just side pockets for water bottles (replaceable elastic), cynch straps to secure the load, a replaceable hip belt (combat molle belts are nice for moving gear forward and onto your waist instead of on your back and can be easily customized because of the molle attachment points) and a very breathable mesh back support.
Mec serratus UL looks better then this
Probably! So many issues going on with this pack.
good video to show NOT to get this pack.
Yup, but I dropped the $$ so I’ll use it until it falls appart…
Nice concept... awful execution from Ultimate Direction
