    The point of footwork is to put yourself in a better position or to keep your oppent from getting an advantage over you.

    A good search term for that fancy ring seems to be 'hexagonal agility ring'. Looks like over here in the UK they're mainly sold for football.
    Edit: I forgot to add the best part, which is that they seem to be pretty common and thus affordable. A pack of six costs about £20 as far as I can tell, which is a lot better than most combat-sports-specific gear I've come across.

    My TKD instructor told us they used to tie their belts together to keep within the just out of range range. So you learned not just to keep going backwards. (I still find it common to walk backwards when someone blitzes, I have to force myself into side stepping for position).

      Pantjar Sliwa is a tool used in Serak Silat. The DeThouars brothers claim they co-opted it from old dutch fencing manuals to explain foot sweeps and leg traps.
      Not easy information to find online, but its there.
      For some reason theres not a lot of diagrams in Judo but there really should be, considering how they do things

    • @hard2hurt

      I'm not a grappling expert... but I have personally felt the difference when a much smaller woman with great _footwork_ was really able to unblance me. So while I know footwork in grappling is a thing, I am not sure exactly how to train it. The principals should be the same though.

      @@ddwfw I’ve just noticed that the BJJ and Judo places I’ve been to will focus on the entry for a throw, but not on the non-engagement footwork. I’m a mediocre judo player but I found knowing how to present angles while grip fighting was helpful even against better practitioners. A lot of high level people seem to have good footwork, but it seems like something they figure out and not something I’ve ever seen explicitly trained

    • @jacobstewart2235
      @jacobstewart2235 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@obiwanquixote8423 In my opinion and personal experience I find that the footwork for grappling isn't a ton different than it is for striking, so if you train footwork the same way a striker would, you'd benefit in BJJ. The core concepts and "rules" are more or less the same: distance, angles, etc. Entries for throws and takedowns is different than it would be for throwing punches etc. but all the basics apply.

    6:42 You are stepping into range and square on... and hoping he also circles instead of cracking you down the middle
    The point of footwork is to get an angle of advantage on the other guy, not expose yourself for no good reason
    I get its just a drill for beginners but gotta be carful not to get people to train in huge faults into their basics too
    Also instructors are having trouble with this?? They need to stop instructing if this is the case
