My mom had an 02 SL1 and she always liked that car. Seeing one again brought back memories for me even though I was only 2 or 3 when she sold it.

I proudly built these cars from start to finish of production in Spring Hill TN, used to buy and flip them for a few bucks, saturn fans forum a great resource to tech tips, one of the best, replace coolant temp sensor, factory ones where plastic tipped, get brass tipped ones for lil over 10 bucks, make a world of difference in mileage and drivability

First time i "encounter" someone who built them from which the comment was not 12 years old. I have a 1995 SL2 right now and i want to thank you for the incredible job you and many others did at the factory. I owned over 30 cars and nothing is as simple, reliable, fun to drive and good overall than the original Saturns. You guys have good reasons to be proud of what you did back then :)

So what's the deal Arnold? Did they make the rings out of styrofoam or just skip that step on engine assembly or what? It's prolly why they run forever there a 2 stroke ... LMAO

@@craftsmanmcvmaxvon-cheroke6925 All 4 cylinders are oil burners. They're all under stress and too low powered for the weight they have to pull or they're beaten all life long. Nothing to do with Saturn or how the guys worked at the factory

@@Ebbsilen Was a lube tech for over a decade and been a mechanic for 2 more.....im not a Machinist or engine builder but know enough to know wtf I'm talking about.....when every Saturn you see come in the shop( even if emaculate and waxed weekly and taken care of grandma driven and early on oil changes ) comes in super low on oil it's a factory defect or flawed design...not hating I'd love an old turd Saturn but thanks to Obama oldies but goodies are few and far between...also.like I said just like the Northstar they burn oil from factory like alot of Volkswagens...but it's cheaper to rewrite in manual that part of ownership is to add a quart every 1000miles then to recall every one and rebuild or replace engines just so they can do it again
...flawed design rushed to market too much money on executive jets and not enough on quality control and research and development......most Hondas don't burn oil....none of my escort 1.9s burned oil and. My current Hyundai with close to 200 k doesn't burn oil ....all 4 cyl.....so uh
....ok👍 was also talking to Arnold always wanted to talk to the people who actually put them together at factory and the asshole engineers who design them .... But thanks for your input 👍 also was half joking I don't really even care or like this channel that much just bored have a super day!

I still have my late mother's 2002 SL2, dark red just like that one, but mine's a 5 spd and being a SL2 is the twin cam. Has 170k on it. We had 4 through the years including the wagon and coupe. The wagon had 210k when my father traded it in. Note: some Saturns can be oil burners due to the rings but keep an eye on the oil and they will still keep on going. Out of the 4 the coupe was and needed a quart about once a month.

We have a Saturn Vew. 2006. Fully loaded. All the electronics functions are good. That's amazing for a general motors product. They did a deal with HONDA. So we have the Honda engine, transmission and drive train. 100,000 miles we had the timing chain replaced. We replaced the
A.C. at 85,000 . We had neglected services of the a.c. Always replaced air filter oil filter and did the oil changes on time We are very happy with it.

There is so much common sense in running a simple and reliable basic car. It could be restored to immaculate condition and be a very worthy long term purchase, a fresh engine or transmission is less than a payment on a new car.

I had a Saturn SL1 and loved it! It got great gas mileage. The only reason why I got rid of it was the dash lights went out and the cost of repair was too expensive at the time because the entire dash had to be taken out to change the bulbs. I also miss the annual Saturn picnic outings at the Milwaukee County Zoo. GM just had to stick their noses in and just foobie a great car company.

I even clearly remember playing with the manual windows, rolling them down and up repeatedly and thinking they were the coolest thing in the world! The last couple years (early 2000s) sometimes cracked heads. Head gaskets usually just leak externally she never fail. I worked at the Saturn dealer and we didn't sell too many head gasket jobs because topping up the oil was the cheaper option.
Also auto transmissions had a couple problems that could be repaired without full overhaul.

Hi Randy. I had a 1993 & 1996 Saturn SC2. The 93 was not so good but the 96 was much better. I was actually trying to get a SW2 but ended up with the SC2. To date, it's the only 'fully loaded' optioned car model I've ever had.
Both SC2's had the DOHC engine that were used in Saab when GM owned them and run them to the ground.
Yours is SL1 with the OHV engine but has some of the SL2 options like tachometer and keyless entry package (power locks and trunk release). Yes people, they were options back then till the end of the series before the Ions and Vues.

Currently drive a 99 SL2. It's loud, rusty a bit (NJ car), rattles a bunch....and i love it so much nonetheless. Resistant to gas price craziness all day everyday. Great find Randy!

Not many of this generation even left with the shortages and all. Dealers getting $1000 in that condition with that mileage

I love Saturns! My sisters first car was an 02 SL1 and my first car was a 97 SL1. I sold it two years ago for a 13 Chevy sonic.

Truck drivers have always called freightliners "freight shakers because they shake rattle and vibrate so much. It's just a nick name I thought you might like to know about

So if the needle on the temp gauge goes over the middle it's hot but not too hot it's like 200 it normally stays slightly above the first quarter of the gauge

    • @Ebbsilen
      @Ebbsilen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

The temp gauges on those cars are pretty bad. The temp sensors are renowned to fail and my 95 also had a faulty gauge. Now i have a working gauge and that thing seems to be fully warmed at around 3-4 needles under the middle. I guess i should buy an aftermarket gauge and place it somewhere.

I deliver pizza in a 1997 Saturn SL1. Best pizza car ever! Parts are cheap. The only issue with mine is someone pulled out of a parking lot and hit the front end so there are some cosmetic issues.
