It's probably one of the greatest Psychological movies ever made. It's also a great murder mystery.
Thank you for mentioning the murder mystery aspect. It has easily one of the most intriguing homicide angles in any horror/psychological thriller.
The scene with his mother walking out of the subway has always stuck with me more than any other image in the film. Feels like a real nightmare.
There is a lot of symbolism in this sequence. She screaming, but without sound is like she was in a place where anyone could hear her, she going down the stairs like she was going to hell, Damien also screaming calling for his mother, but he could not be listened by her or to take her back, the St. Joseph's medal falling means something like Damien becoming vulnerable for the demon... It's a really creepy nightmare indeed.
I felt the same about the scene of her sitting up in Regan’s bed in all white. shakes me to my core every time
The Exorcist is refined horror poetry. It's a brilliant movie in so many ways. The characters are so beautifully portrayed. They are real people. Karras is one of my favorite movie characters all time.

This has always been the scariest movie of all time for me. The concept of being possessed is very scary to me, The idea of being trapped in your own body while something else is in control.
Absolutely, yes! The idea that there could exist far superior intelligences then us, that they view the human body merely as a vessel or should I say vehicle that could be hopped in and out of on a whim is very terrifying indeed. 😨

Poor Linda Blair was there in just a nightie while everyone else had jackets. She says that to this day she can’t stand the cold because of it
There's a lot of creepy AF incidents that happened while making the film, but the most insane was the story of the radiologist (The one saying "Don't move "): Paul Bateson was a prolific serial killer!!!

Avoid the second film at all costs and go straight to the third installation which is one of the best psychological thrillers of all time and directly connected to the first film. Highly recommended. Great reaction.
Agreed. Second movie is a waste. Third movie is the true sequel and has probably one of the best jump scares in horror moviedom.

I always feel like this movie is so scary is because there was no reasoning for what happened to Reagan and there are no obvious jump scares. There was probably no other movie like this before it was released. I remember my parents telling how scared they were when they first saw it.
The book is clear that the reasoning for her possession was using the Ouija Board
You have to understand, at the time, there was nothing like it. People weren’t desensitized to graphic imagery like society is today. We also had to wait in line that went for a mile, just to get in the theater. Times are just different.
I was born in 1988 so im not from that era, still hold the exorcist as one of the greatest horrormovies of all time, its so well made, also there had never what i understand been made something like this involving the catholic church, another true classic from the 70:s is the original The Omen.

Only horror movie ever to be nominated for an academy award. Only one of two movies in history that had 😮a psychological and social effect on the moviegoers. People were running out of the theaters, vomiting and passing out. They were also running to go sit in a church and like myself I had to sleep with the light on for almost three nights after seeing the movie. The other movie that terrorized entire nation was "Jaws". I'm sixty-eight years old and I seen the movie where the first came out and personally witness the entire summer an entire country was afraid to go into the ocean. You can watch the true story of the audience being interviewed after watching The exorcist for the first time in the theater. You will never see this reaction from people with any other horror movie
I don’t think this is true anymore. Get Out is largely considered a horror film and it was nominated in 2017.

Example: psychological horror, thriller horror, mystery horror and so on. Even the academy of motion pictures says it's the only horror movie ever nominated for an academy award

We used to do a lot of swimming off of boats in the lakes in the 70's. After I saw Jaws, I spent most of my time trying to see what was swimming under me with very uneasy feelings for years. Even though it was a lake lol!
This is my favourite horror movie by far. It might be cheesy at moments, but for its time, this was horrifying. Still makes me incredibly uncomfortable every time I watch it, and that’s exactly what you want!
Definitely wouldn't say this movie was cheesy lol. Primitive? Sure but not cheesy, most horror films now are cheesy and rely too much on jump scares for lacking actually scary, creepy scenes this movie has.
The reason why this movie remains as the greatest horror movies is because there was nothing like it on it's time. Explicit imagery, exorcism theme, etc. ALSO a huge part of it's iconic status are the practical effects, and thats something people nowdays doesn't seem to understand. This is my all time favorito movie
*Imagine never seeing a movie, a TV show or anything on the topic of the paranormal, possession, the devil, etc.. because it had never been done before. Then you watch this movie and it has all of that in one shot. People today are desensitized to these movies because they've seen it all before. It's been done a hundred thousand times. But when this movie is your 1st experience with anything on the topic, it was the most disturbing and terrifying thing ever! Given the fact that it relies solely on the story and the graphics as opposed to jump scares, it stands the test of time.*
I love how you're sort of freaked out by the police detective talking to Chris. You find him creepy when he's really just a good guy trying to find out what's going on. And then. We go upstairs.

It's not the scariest movie of all time but it's easily the most shocking, you'll never get people leaving the movie theatre throwing up and in distress again.
They say it was the medical procedure scenes where everyone was fainting and throwing up. I’m a nurse and it always makes me woozy.

I’ve heard a lot of those claims were hype by the marketing department, and never really happened. Shame, because it probably contributed to Linda Blaire getting harassed.

You ought to watch it along with “The Bride Of Frankenstein”, and “The Son Of Frankenstein”. All classic horror movies. I would also advise you to watch the original “Dracula” with Bela Lugosi. Actor Dwight Frye gives an over the top performance as Renfield which is one of my all time favorites. He also appears as Fritz in “Frankenstein”, thought he was virtually unrecognizable compared to the other role.
They built a huge freezer and built the bedroom inside of the freezer. So yes, it was really cold inside of the room.
This and Requiem For A Dream are Ellen Burstyn's most devastating performances, with her performance as Sara Beyond Heartbreaking.

Great reaction! I appreciate that you are able to evaluate these films keeping in mind the context in which they first appeared. So many people shrug or laugh at older horror movies, but you gotta put yourself in the mindset of not having seen all the things that it influenced that came later. This would have been so insanely shocking for people to watch in the theater at the time, especially all of the violent and sexual dialogue coming from a little girl.

I believe the documentary on the exorcism this was based on is still on TH-cam... it's actually pretty interesting and according to one of the attending priests who had to keep a journal of the events, it took about a month in a wing of a hospital where only those involved were allowed to be...
The Exorcist is the scariest, iconic, classic movie; of course, it lives up to this day.

Definitely one of the scariest movies of all time, I think to some it is and I get why. This movie will scare most adults and pretty much every kid, anyone as a kid who says otherwise is a liar. Even hardcore horror buffs admit they got freaked out young seeing this. lol Nice reaction.
A lot of people seem to miss the significance of Damien’s necklace. It’s a patron saint amulet (not sure which one). The demon can only enter his body after the amulet is ripped off his neck. Giving it back to the mother will help protect them in the future.
They also found the same type of amulet buried with the demon carving in Iraq presumably keeping the demon locked up so to speak. Removing it set it free.

There are so many details about this movie that just add to the scares. The way the homeless man in the subway is lit by the train, the crazy tracking shot of the hypnotist falling to the floor... The sound of the dogs fighting while Merrin stares at the statue is probably my favorite.
Yes, they had to refrigerate the room to sub freezing temperatures to produce the steam from their breaths. All of the special effects are practical except for one early cgi. When Regan vomits on Father Damien Karras, they used cartoon imagery to make the pea soup thicker and faster.
Different genre, but a hidden gem......."Rob Roy". Overshadowed by "Braveheart" since they were released months apart. About a real person from Scottish history, Rob Roy Macgreggor. Stars Liam Neeson in the title role. Also co-stars Tim Roth in his only Oscar nominated role to date. Great movie!

The needle in the neck scene featured an actual medical staff member of Bellevue hospital in NYC. He was later arrested and convicted of being a serial killer IRL.
Yeah that's the brilliance of this movie. Scary at its time, but unsettling and unnerving for ALL times. I bought the DVD version "The version you've never seen" with one extra scene. I had seen the movie before but that one extra scene stopped me in my tracks to the point of it stayed with me for the rest of the movie...

Have you ever noticed that the folks who say a movie isn't scary, they can never list their own scariest movie because it's all about ego and admitting fear. Then they play it off saying they never get scared when deep down, they're the same people who make noises in the theater during scary movies as a coping mechanism.

Correct! When there were reports of people vomiting and passing out in theaters, it was during those scenes, but William Friedkin, (being a bit of a student of William Castle,) understood they could use that to promote the film as being so scary it caused people to walk out, vomit, & pass out.
If I encounter someone who genuinely thinks this film is scary I usually follow up by asking “how old where you when you saw it?” & “were you raised Catholic or Evangelical?,” because it usually tracks 🤷🏻♀️ Especially, if they were Reagan’s age or younger and raised on the idea demons literally exist and will possess you, (even if they are lame, lesser demons and not actually the devil,) when they saw it.
Some people think the spider-walk, (which was cut from the theatrical release because they didn’t feel the effects were up to snuff,) was scary, but I thought it was meh 🤷🏻♀️
Like The Omen, the more I see this film and reactions to it the more I appreciate it overall, but definitely not scary or even all that interesting, tbh. Though I love the music, the editing is well crafted, and the acting is good-Especially Ellen Burstyn’s performance.
The Exorcist 3 (1990) is pretty great, it has George C. Scott, Brad Douriff, & Fabio. Also, I highly recommend 1980’s The Ninth Configuration, (directed by William Peter Blatty, author of The Exorcist.) The film stars Stacy Keach & Scott Wilson (known for The Walking Dead,) and depicts an interesting conversation around spirituality, existence, the Vietnam War, and how we choose to believe if someone is mentally ill or not, and of course, PTSD. Though The Exorcist 3 is Horror, The Ninth Configuration is not, not really-Adjacent to Horror, perhaps.
Fun facts: the director, William Friedkin would fire off guns near actors in order to startle them. Jason Miller (Father Karras) threatened him with bodily harm if he did it again.
The vomiting scene was supposed to hit Jason Miller in the chest, but obviously missed, thus his genuine reaction is on film.
Father Jospeh Dyer (the priest who comforts Father Karras as he's dying) is played by Father William O'Malley, who is an actual Catholic priest. In order to get him to appear afraid and grief stricken, the director slapped him in the face just before the take.
Both Linda Blair (Regan) and Ellen Burstyn (Chris) suffered permanent back injuries from this movie and Linda cannot stand being cold due to being stuck for weeks, tied to a bed on the bedroom set.
The Rick James song "Cold-Blooded" is about Linda Blair, as he was in a years long relationship with her.
fun fact: when she turns her head around it's a life size doll they made for that purpose and the crew had a lot of fun sitting the doll on a taxi and turning the head around when people got in

I grew up watching this movie through the 70's & 80's. In the early 2000's I saw the director's cut at a Cinerama theater up here in Seattle. Best way to see it is on a jumbo curved screen. With surround sound. LOL.

It took me until I was 40 to watch that movie! I watched other horror movies but that one I couldn’t. Love your commentary I laughed a lot.
I feel like he watched the OG version. So we missed some fun reactions, but there are so many strange facts about the making of this movie. The set burning down, all except Regan's room. It was preserved. They did actually cut the air way down to make their breath show. Someone left it on and the set was covered in a layer of "snow". Which still isn't possible with the air turned down. Also many deaths, some during filming and some after.
And for your next Demon possession, try "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" (2005)
A lawyer takes on the negligent homicide case of a priest who performed an exorcism on a college student. It stars Laura Linney (Ozarks) as the lawyer, Tom Wilkinson (The Full Monty) as the priest, and the lovely and talented Jennifer Carpenter (Dexter, Limitless) as Emily. (But, to be honest, I think she actually curses _more_ in Dexter than when she's possessed! lol)
Personally, I think it's as good as this one!
Great movie! One of my favorites. To show the possible alternative to the Defense's case, Jennifer Carpenter played just about all the scenes w/o any special effect enhancements.
As a kid when this trailer would come on it would freak me out big time with the music etc, so much hype especially in middle school and my over imaginative mind in overdrive, also the author of the book and the director have said in interview I watched that they never considered I a horror movie but a psychological thriller , thanks again!

For another exorcist type film, I'd recommend The Rite which stars Sir Anthony Hopkins, it tends to get overlooked and is worth a watch, very disturbing

Nice job man. I came here, just after watching your reaction to Hot Fuzz. Now, two suggestions: 1. the day you feel like rewatching The Exorcist, watch the extend cut. Some people say that the added scenes and effects are superfluous but for a second viewing, I believe this is a must. 2. If you have not watched Ravenous yet, consider watching and reviewing it. A very good blend of dark humor and horror in magnificent remote lonely place. I am pretty sure you will enjoy it.
Cant believe you had not seen this classic, still holds up really well for a 50 year old movie. Another 70:s classic you should give a watch is the original The Omen from 1976.
All horror is subjective, this stuff truly terrifies me, I highly recommend skipping part 2 and go directly to Exorcist 3, the theatrical cut not directors!
Fun and very disturbing fact, Jeffrey Dahmer would show the Exorcist 3 before he killed his victims. That fact makes me feel so uncomfortable and that it's such a good film and perfect sequel too. George C Scott plays the detective that's in the 1st one

Although the movie is very loosely based on a confirmed case from the late 1940s, it wasn't as scary after I learned a bizarre and dark piece of Hollywood trivia. The scariest thing about this movie for me is that the technician in the imaging room (Paul Bateson) filled his time between acting jobs as a serial killer. This is a documented true story.
the film gets in your head. I saw it way before the modern age horrors, i was actually born the same year as the film, so it was one of the first major films i saw. it got in my head.. you have been immunised against a lot of horrors, and slow burn films are not in todays world its all fast jumps.. the 2nd is only ok if you think of it as a spoof of the first, the 3rd is scary
I think it’s the best horror movie of all time hands down. New generations will say it’s not scary but it’s really disturbing. Fine, it’s still the best horror film of all time. Most horror films suck and weakly copy other horror films so there’s not a lot of competition for best horror film to begin with. There certainly are other good horror movies (Incidious, OG Halloween, Scream, Hereditary, just to name a few). Exorcist is better than them all and Exorcist is The Godfather of horror movies. Try to name a horror movie that’s better without naming a horror movie that isn’t better. Bet you can’t do it.
Hello from Ontario Canada I saw the Exorcist growing up in the 80s and I have watched it ever since it is on my top ten percent of must watch Horror and or Psychological thriller movies right next too Hellraiser in fact this movie was so accurate and controversial that the Catholic church was trying everything in their power too not get it made also this movie is based on a book by the same title which I have the book is based on a real life Exorcism that took place in the 40s in the US and unlike in the movie in real life it was a 14 year old boy named Roland Doe the reason he got possessed was because his Aunt introduced him too the Ouija board and he got possessed by an evil entity . Also in case you are wondering why the opening scene is in Northern Iraq it is because there is traces of Christianity and the Byzantine Empire there .

Growing up, we always heard the book and subsequent film were based on an actual case (true), the child was male (true), and it occurred in Europe (not true). The young man actually went on to have a very successful career as a NASA Engineer, working on the Apollo missions and even the Space Shuttle. He did, however, spend his life fearful of his identity being revealed- in particular to his colleagues at NASA. It was not. He passed a year prior. It’s quite impressive actually that it wasn’t as the priests involved kept copious amounts of notes, flipping only 2 letters in his real first name with Doe as the last, across 2 states as the family moved. Of course, one must assume it would be incredibly & increasingly difficult to remain secreted today!
He did prior to his death tell one individual with whom he was particularly close- ‘I was never possessed; I was merely a rather mischievous and even naughty boy at times.”
Knowing of his decades-long & successful career w NASA, the filmmakers’ subtle nod is fascinating: the Astronaut at the dinner party.
Also of note: the individual graduated from Georgetown University.
His name is out there, found easily w a search; simply a personal choice to not publicly declare😊

I once found an old ouija board like that up in my dads parents house attic.
i remember watching this at the drive in when it first came out. it was the greatest, for it's time. remember it was 1973 after all.
i know some people say the original exorcist wasn't "scary", but they have to understand when you were a kid at that time it was scary to you. when i was a kid, i was supposed to be asleep, i was crouched on the side of the couch and the part came on with her head, i got up and ran to my mom screaming and crying. that movie traumatized me when i was a kid in the 90's. i hate when people "oh that wasn't scary" to other horror movies when in reality not all horror movies have to be gory and scary, and with loud noises, the story line is creepy, along with movies that are based on true stories. this exorcist movie already freaks me out, the original only had 1, not they have 2. i love horror movies, but i'm so sick of them remaking shit. come up with your own shit for once, we know the classics are amazing, but there's no need for a fucking remake. we have apps for a reason to watch those old movies. i'm just tired of the remakes or when they just keep dragging out movies. they turned chucky into a damn series and i didn't even watch the series nor want to, it looks like shit.
I didn’t watch it til I was nearly 50 yrs old. I was too afraid of it. I watched it and realized I was right to wait and not watch it as a teen. It would have given me serious nightmares for years. I now see why I wasn’t allowed to watch it as a kid. A masterpiece of horror. The scariest part is that it is a real possibility as opposed to vampires or zombies.

Did this cut have the Regan stair scene? Because I was surprised it wasn't in the reaction. Or maybe I just missed it. I know there are multiple cuts of this movie though and that scene isn't in one of them.

The little pill that Father Merrin took, at the beginning of the movie, is a nitroglycerin pill, to ease the pain of Angina. Angina is a type of chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart. Angina is a symptom of coronary artery disease. The pain is often described as squeezing, pressure, heaviness, tightness or pain in the chest. My mother had to take these same pills, due to Angina caused by Diabetes.
Those steps still exist to this day, in Georgetown, Washington, DC. In Google Earth, go to the intersection of Whitehurst Fwy NW, and M St NW (In Street View). Look to the North. At the back of the parking lot, on the right, you will see a red brick building to the right, and a gray stone wall to the left. Right between them, is a staircase that leads to the upper street level. That is the staircase featured in this film.
Cardinal sin to watch scary movie 2 prior to the exorcist. You should watch it again now that you’ve seen this, it’s absolutely hilarious.

Not the scariest movie I’ve ever seen. But considering I grew up four blocks from that house and those darn stairs, definitely a movie that stuck with me. Took me years before I was comfortable again using those stairs at night.

I was the same way with silent hill 1. I played all the silent hills since 2 on release and was afraid I wasnt going to like 1 because it might not hold up. Same result as you and The Exorcist I was glad I was wrong.
