Ford Bronco Raptor Problems - Experiencing Issues on the Trail!

- We take our Ford Bronco Raptor to a relatively easy trail known as Hackett Gulch in Colorado for a chill day of off roading...or so we thought! This is a trail we've taken both our Toyota FJ80 Land Cruiser on, as well as our Jeep Wrangler JLUR. With perfect weather and almost no obstacles, we definitely weren't expecting to continue experiencing problems with our Bronco...as it continues to put itself into limp mode, among other things.

I ordered a Bronco and canceled my reservation. I purchased a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 Xtreme Recon and I'm happy with it. You guys are actually using the Bronco Raptor and revealing some weaknesses. Hopefully Ford will address them. For now, I'm glad I switched.
Where I would look first (but I'm not Chris by a long shot) is for a ground point that's loose or broken, particularly on the underside or a connector that's loose or a connector pin that is loose anywhere. The fact that the wrench seems to come on when going downhill plus the turn-off-on (aka "Power on Reset") tends to mean that something is just loose enough that an infinitesimal change in any force causes it to separate - and those error conditions may be a sense once, and it's set, rather than an ongoing condition like an inop fan. The PoR causes the electricity to jump the spark gap just enough to reset it. Good luck!
Ran Longwater and Hackett to the water years ago and there Awesome !!
Without the water there not all that.
To bad they can't let Off-Roaders use that area like they should be able to. There are several lawsuits pending to open it back up. I hope and pray they win !!
Love that you guys are doing trails again. The other stuff is cool too, butseeing new trails or watching you guys do challenging routes are my favorite videos!
Take it to a dealer, they can pull the error codes that are in memory to get a clue as to what the problem is. You can also add an OBD II reader to your "kit". You should be able to get the codes that way as it's happening. As they say, such is life with computer everything. Keep up the great videos!
Every time I go out I take my Rubicon out, I take my scan tool! If not for me, anyone else!
I thought the plan for the braptor was a baja build. Might be hard to beef it up for rocks without slowing it down elsewhere.
this is crazy you're having problems with a 2nd bronco, and this time a raptor. i'm just over here enoying my badsquatch!
Years ago my stock JKU rubicon had issues where the rear locker wouldn’t disengage. I took it to the dealer for a warranty repair and was told by the dealer that Jeep wouldn’t warranty it because it looks as if I took it off-road. I told them I definitely took it off-road but I’d like Jeep to put that as the reason why they were denying my warranty claim. They told me to call Jeep. Come to find out that was just a dealer claim or some misunderstanding. Regardless Jeep ended up fixing the issue, provided me a rental, threw in 3 years of oil changes and tire rotations. All this to say, electrical problems exist. They are the worst. Hopefully Ford will find out what’s causing your issues and do you guys right. For over 100K that beast should be treating you much better. Awesome video as always.
Can’t believe they finally closed part of these trails. Been wheeling them my whole life… such a bummer! Hackett -cross the Platte- Longwater was always an early season favorite before the higher trails thaw out.
God bless you Brittany. "Points at the Bronco Raptor" and says "Not the best rock crawler, which we already know". Second statement, "Jeep for rock crawling". Never was a truth better stated.
Definitely some troubles with the twist of the Raptor damaging the front fenders. A good bumper with a winch. Heck yeah. And perhaps Chris can configure that body/bumper in such a fashion as to not have the body of the Raptor come in contact with that new front bumper with integrated winch? Hope. Hope.
Yep. And like I said, like you said, "Start making changes/modifications away from stock to all those electronic features..." KaBoom!!!
Sweet video! Thank you.
We took our BRaptor up Engineer Pass and had some strange glitch as well. Coming off a small ledge I bumped the bottom skid somewhere near the midline of the Bronco and bells went off telling me the cross traffic avoidance system had faulted. It cleared itself but in addition while aired down it only showed one wheel to be low even though all of them were set to the same pressure. Covered 3400 miles in a week and was impressed with how comfortable it is but the glitches are somewhat annoying and worrisome. Awesome video.
Cant get enough of the content. Glad to see you two back out there. Grammy Gold !
in case they havent figured it out yet, that popping noise on the jeep is most likely the chain slipping in the transfer case. had that identical sound in a rig before and it got gradually worse until the chain broke and split the transfer case in half.
Great video agree about the oil weight. All about CAFE standards. People also need to learn differences tolerance and clearance. Steel and aluminum still expand like they did 50 years ago.
I'd just buy a stock older JKU grocery-getter and rebuilt the thing any which way that you want. That would be a nice video series to watch!
I had the exact same issue with my Braptor. I took it in four times and they couldn’t fix it. Finally the fifth time they did fix it. They had to overnight a part from Texas. What a pain!
I've had none of those problems with my Bronco. Oh wait, it's a '93 pre-runner/ crawler. I'm it's nannies. We get alot of new vehicles into our shop with problems like that. Sometimes it's hard to say if the benefits of technology, outweigh the agrivation of when they get confused. My 88 YJ crawler continues to run, even when it's on it's side😅.
Wow I just felt the highs and lows of just purchasing ours after watching. Good to know and yet happy and grateful we have two backup jeeps..🤔
All new vehicles always have kinks that need ironing. 😊 We has just as many electronic problems with our JL when we first bought it.
That’s such a bummer about your raptor. I haven’t had any issues with mine. You have to let us know what codes they are if you find out
I can tell you guys are missing the step child too much. The step child needs to be back in action ASAP !!
Agreed!
I prefer to see the unimog in action
Hackett and Longwater are some of my old local 4-wheeling trails. I remember spending several weekends 20+ years ago going in with a 4-wheeling group and doing lots of trail maintenance (both manual and with my own tractor with a loader and rear blade) on Hackett and Longwater. We actually did a LOT of work on Hackett down to the river from where it is now closed to vehicular traffic. Same thing on Longwater. 'Course, the whole Hayman fire from a few years back torching the entire area didn't help matters either.
With a couple clubs over 20 years ago. They took an abandoned rolled vehicle out of Longwater or May have been Hacket. It went out the side that is now closed. That was before the fires and the fight with the counties and forest service to keep them open. Brad I am guessing you were the guy with the tractor down by the river.
I went so many times before the fire. That’s really the only way I still see it in my head. Amazing one letter did all this.
Beautiful country there. Gotta get over there!
Now you know why I won't off road in anything newer than my JK. New rigs are FAR too complicated to trust off road. Especially for very remote trails. The 4Xe may be downright scary to take to remote trails.
I've seen the 4xe off road and it's capable just like the JKs and there's literally no risk for that battery to get beat up because they put the battery pack underneath the rear seat.
@@husker_nation Oh I'm sure it's perfectly capable, especially when it's new. But it's not just the battery. It's BRUTALLY complicated all around. I would never take one to a remote trail, **especially** as it ages.
@@husker_nation have you seen trailrecon when he tried to take a 4xe off road? it had many so many lights on the dash. and he wasn't even doing anything crazy.
@@Stackali Haven't seen that particular one from trail recon. I'll look it up
I'm in a JLU Sport and it's been very reliable. It has power windows and locks, keyless entry and the 7" uconnect and that's it. No electronic disconnect, no different off road modes, no parking sensors, nothing. I'll eventually upgrade the axles (especially the front - may get a Dana 44 Rubicon takeoff), but for now I'm happy.
You guys should just fly a drone to the bottom of the hill next time you want to go down there 😂, that was crazy steep!! Hope you guys are having a great day ❤️❤️💯🤙
Your electronic issue may be your ETB (Electronic Throttle Body). I had that same issue & replacing it was the answer. Keep up with the cool off roading vids.
The same thing happened on my BRaptor during Bronco Safari. While going downhill in 4L the wrench light came on and it went into limp mode. Turned it of, restarted and everything was back to normal (for a little while. ) Did this several times always while going downhill. The common scenario I found was it was doing the service wrench/limp mode while I was in 4-Low and using manual shifting (downshifting from 2nd to 1st). One time, when it was happening, I took it out of manual shifting, put it into 4-low automatic and it worked just fine. Put it back into 4-low manual and while going downhill the wrench light came back on.
When I got back home had my local dealer look at it, but they couldn't find any modules showing codes. One item they did ask about was my fuel level as a low fuel pressure was noted. I would fill up each morning before hitting the trails so I don't think that was it. 😮
I guess as long as your comfortable when it breaks down then its alright! 😆 🤣 😂 Happy Trails to you both!
It's a good thing you have a Chris.
Ah, the beauties of mountain hiking - like thin air and steep inclines and aching lungs! Electronics can tell you a lot about you vehicle condition, but I don’t like the Nannies shutting it down. Even my 2005 has electric Gremlins. Better to have a Love/Hate relationship with a vehicle than a spouse! LiteBriteNationBroncoInclinations!
I'm surprised you didn't bring an OBDII reader, take a screenshot of the code, then present that to a Ford dealership. So they know where to look for the problems
We keep a reader in the Jeep, but haven’t gotten one for the Bronco (although clearly need to)
@@LiteBrite Your garden variety OBD-II scanner won't read the majority of the new codes, so plan on spending mucho dinero for a reader.
Stop at the local auto parts place that claims they can read codes and see if their scanner can detect what's wrong. All too frequently they'll read a generic code, not vehicle specific.

@@wtbman The problem with PC based software is that most computers don't handle rough terrain well. The stand alone scanners are toughened to handle vibration.
I can't speak for Android tablets that might run the programs you mentioned..
I really like your Raptor video, it’s amazes me that Ford can build a vehicle this quick that can duplicate everything Jeep does after all of knowledge-and years and types of jeeps in production. Good job Ford. The Raptor seems like your taking a Lincoln to do what you do with a throw away ?
did you watch the video?
My Braptor has been AMAZING! To many haters. Jealousy is a horrible thing!😢
Kevin remembers every tiny detail of the proposal including how many bugs were flying around … Brittney on the other hand just remembers sinking the Toyota in 8ft of water 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤦🏻♂️
Bravo not going down to the river in your rig 👏. Very contested area.
Mad props for stopping at the trail end and hiking!
You are lucky, where I live they've closed most of the back roads to motorized traffic so it's hike or horse back and they're starting to close some off to horses saying it destroys the land. Good luck with the braptor, I hope you get the Stepchild together soon so you can have more fun off road. Have fun y'all ps happy birthday Kevin
Chevy is the same way. I've had nothing but problems with my silverado. They don't make them like they use to but definitely keep raising the prices.
What are these LS3 motors like, any good or would a man be better off going Gen 1, 350 for his Series 3 short wheelbase Land Rover build?
This is why I only take my Jeeps to the strip mall, is that lame, maybe, but I don't have a ton of damage to fix at all😂 I applaud you for being so brave with your Jeep and Bronco👏
All the NEW off road rigs HAVE TOO MUCH TECHNOLOGY. When I was a Kid in the ‘70s all we had was solid axels and HUB LOCKERS and it was a lot more fun.
My guess on the wrench light is a low oil sensor. Either the trans or motor oil. Always comes on on a steep downhill. When you restart and clear the fault you seem to be on level land.
Definitely have that area on my bucket list. Awesome views on that trail.
get yourself a odb code reader when that service wrench goes on, all the error codes will be displayed on screen and can be eliminated by searching those codes online. Its worth the shot
So I’m guessing the throttle problems and other issues related to stability and traction control could be a result of the 74 weld upgrade. Not resetting steering wheel position and/or the different programming for the steering rack will cause all of those problems.
Hi guys, I get the amber wrench with limp mode regularly when wheeling (often while going downhill) my 2023 BRaptor. If you open the FordPass app on your phone and select "Account" (top right corner) then "Message Center" you will see an entry for each occurrence of this. Mine shows "Powertrain Malfunction / Reduced Power" and the date/time for each incident. I'm pretty sure that the dealer could pull out these codes from the truck even far after the event and tell you what triggered the wrench/limp. I've got a service call coming up and will be asking the dealer to check this and tell me what's going on. I'll report back here once I find out and maybe save some folks some time. Love the channel!
Happy Birthday and thanks for bringing us along.
Watching how fun the trails are makes me regret selling my XJ 😢, the hiking part not so much😂 I got tired watching y’all walk it and was laying down 😂😂.
Did the gulches - all 3 in about 5 hours in a couple jeeps. Went with a toy group and it took all day for 1.
You guys should consider calibrating your Raptors flux capacitor every once in awhile 😂
Rookie mistake.
@@LiteBrite🤣🤣🤣
Ya'll will get it figured out hopefully soon.
Probably too much stale beer and not enough banana peel in there.
Ford went Woke, and they haven't produced a good Bronco since probably before you youngsters were Born
Ya'll need to listen to the old timers,Break out The Dynamite and permanently Fix that So called Bronco, was a Ford guy all my life, grew up with Ford's, owned a bunch of them, started having Quality Issues in the late 80's and 90's,everyone that I knew that bought new 1's had issues with them,I won't own a new vehicle these days,as far as I'm concerned, they are all junk, too many Electronics to fail, hard to work on them yourself, so now I go Old School! 🇺🇸
So much for wanting a Bronco, thanks for the warning
@Miss_Lite_Brite. Let's not and say we did
Yep, the problem with new vehicle it to much electronics, I drive a 47 cj and have no issues, yall need to go old school, great vidios
Hey guys, I've been watching your channel now for over a year. Love the insights and suggestions. I'm reaching out for the 1st time as my truck has gone into Limp Mode as well. My cause at the moment is an exhaust heat exchange sensor. I'm somewhat documenting my issues on my channel to hopefully make people aware of this issue. Please reach out and let me know what you guys find out about your issue and if it's the same thing or not. Good luck.
Love your videos. Can you do a stock Bronco R vs a stock Rubicon 392 on the same challenging trails? It seems that the stock BR is always compared to built jeeps. Don't off-roaders build a jeep for rock climbing for a reason? It's hard to get a good read on the BR performance when the only thing that is original on the Jeep is the cab.
thank you! and can anyone talk about the modes and tricks that are available in the bronco. the hill assist feature alone is amazing.
I love the bronco content, but I am sorry about the issues. I hope you keep at it with the Braptor though!
Hey guys, we had a limp mode issue at 200 km, turned out there was an issue with one of the circuits in our throttle pedal. 8 days later we got back in and it was fixed for our holiday week where we drove over 1500 km. Hope it gets figured out!
Lol, if anyone should have a diagnosis tool ,,, you guys should. 😆 Kevin' humor not so good today. He just wanted to remember how much he loves Brit on the special day of proposal. Yes, good thing your going down hill. 😂😅🤣
Can't wait to see the Step Child back out on the trails!! Not a fan of the Bronco's at all, the IFS made it a no way for me. See Y'all at GSMJI next month!!😃
Not a fan of the Bronco as well. Give me solid axles or give me death...
@@SixSixtiSix Absolutely!!
An OBD-II scanner would tell you the faults that have tripped in the past. Like what Scotty Kilmer uses. Not even that expensive. :)
Glad you love birds are enjoying/hating the Bronco.
If you want to know what accessories they get for your bronco such as the bumpers and skid plates you should watch TC customs and how they build theirs out.
If ya'll don't want to blow that piece of Junk up,then Pull the Body off and have Chris find ya'll a frame that's close to the same dimensions, and he can make the modifications to put the bronco body on it,Viola! It will look like you still have your Shiny new Toy,But with a much better Frame and running gear!
Awesome content!!! ❤️
HAPPY Candles Day 🎉 🎂bumper was like cake a cake...
It was fun seeing the moose but I was hoping for a peanut butter and jelly sighting.
Bronco might be an overlander but it’s not shaped to be a crawler. Jeep body advantage is narrow in relation to tires. And the electrical issues are growing. I’ll stick to the minivan with a pentastar
Faults should be logged might be able to get it scanned. It also seems like it's a body control issue not so much ecu. But I'm just a truck driver idk haha
Another stupid feature all newer vehicles have, if the code doesn’t stay on, you can’t find out what the deal is
My 68 Bronco has the same problem. No codes!
Scan the bronco when the error comes up before shuting it off. You should be able to pull the codes out. They might also be listed as a history code.
You should get another jeep 392 and compare it stock to the bronco as in capabilities
Can’t wait to see what the issue is .
Literally did this trail yesterday in my Braptor. Hit a few of the puddles on the road to the trail head and bam today service charge system then full shutdown of vehicle. Stuck in Colorado Springs waiting on the Ford dealer to even look at it. Almost certain it killed the alternator. All this from a few inches of muddy water.
😳😢
I would strongly recommend that you get an OBDII scanner. Even a cheap one will do. I have a walmart $19.95 one in my motorhome and one in my jeep. True true that its not uber fancy but it lasted me on my 2nd gen tacoma for 6 years. 3rd gen tacoma for 6 years and on all my rvs and now on my gladiator for a year. Better than nothing. Some of the fancier ones cost $$$$ but most of the issues those detect are in the category of hunting down impossible to find issues, rather than something big like vehicle going into limp mode. You can have something stupid like an evap leak or o2 sensor failure or some gawidget that would be detectable via el cheapo scanner.
I need to get my hands on a fancy obdii scanner one of those days. It is just the thought of spending that much does not quite appeal to me but $20 I can swing because it more than paid for itself many times over.
Ford really did build a great Mall cruiser
Lol 😂
Crazy when a Toyota 4runner, is a better option for a 3rd of the price
Maybe some of the components were made in California and are going on strike.. Get one of those devices (HP Tuner Tazer and the like) that identifies codes so you can read and diagnose the codes when they are occurring. As always...great scenery and even better appreciation of the ability of the Braptor. (IMO hope to get the Stepchild back on the trail.. Kevin can beat on it and the StepChild gives less warning lights).
Your bRaptor said "happy birthday, I got you some codes."
Make sure when you eventually sell it to advertise that it is all highway miles, no rock crawling.
A Bronco having problems? Weird. Who would have thought?
With Kevin driving there going to be some kind of problems
Loose but behind the wheel 😅

I'm sorry you're having such problems with your bronco raptor. Definitely not a good time. I to don't like it when things don't work like they are supposed to. Best of luck in the future with that thing.
You all need to ride up to Bristol Head, CO
My dad traded a '17 F150 for a Sasquatch Bronco, then 2 months later he missed a new turn in drive at a restaurant by about 3 feet. He temporarily ate the ditch but only going 3-5 mph. It was not yet dawn an foggy plus he's old so I get it. What I don't get is the 7k damage to "sensors & tech wires" that got chewed up in bumper/ undercarriage in that VERY small event. Needless to say after waiting a month for parts that never arrived, he traded back to a newer F150 w/ actual metal parts. Sad because it was a fun an decent looking vehicle.
I came down hard on the stock steel bumper on our JLU Rubicon, to the point the tailgate was hard to open. All it took to fix it was a couple of whacks with a big hammer. Now you can’t even tell it happened. If you gave me one of those Broncos for free, I would just sell it to pay for a Jeep.
Happy Birthday Brother
I’m a 1st Generation Bronco lover, the Mustang of 4x4’s
I’m not a jeep or Ford fan yet cause overland or rock crawling is something I aspire to do. However did the 1st model of the jeep have issues? I think most newly developed vehicles designed to rock crawl would have issues. It’ll hopefully improve as engineers learn what works and what sacrifice for margin was not worth it.
When you take it in to be serviced, don’t shut it off until after the issue has been experienced by a mechanic or technician
Blue driver OBD2 scanner works for me. Connects to the phone via Bluetooth and gives you all the codes.
See a lot of hate or at the least "funny" comments from the jeep and even toy communities (personally a tj fan). You people should be happy the bronco is becoming popular. This will push toy and jeep not to rest on their current models.
💯
Great video! Sorry about your Ford issues. Did you try selling it? Might be a quick fix. Lol
When she said yes ,Kevin out punted his coverage. 😊
Even though a restart does reset the system and allow for driving, it doesn’t erase the code. I had the same issue on my BRaptor and it sent the code to my Ford Pass App and the dealer was able to read the codes after the fact. Seemed to happen with 4 Low and rock crawling and it threw a Powertrain Malfunction/Reduced Power. Probably some sensor that is overly cautious and monitoring it with Ford.
Don’t threaten me with a good time, that looks like some kickass suffering.
It's a loose electronic connection some where, probably transfer case or transmission.or loose ground
Check out the DV8 Spec Series winch bumper. I have it on my code orange.
OK the editing on this one was on point! Who's taking credit?
feels like Bronco is not there yet... hurry up Ford!!!
I think the bronco is a great vehicle only down fall any time you adopt into a new model year vehicle or just a new model that has not been made before issues will happen hopefully 2nd gen broncos will be less troublesome & just more redefined. I appreciate that ford brought out a off roading vehicle since the only companies doing it is jeep toyota & maybe Land Cruiser no one else & most vehicles today are going electric bummer. We need more off road vehicle options! Lol
I would say electrical gremlins that come and go like this is probably a weak battery or a bad ground issue somewhere.
Fords quality control and reliability has gone down the drain. I sadly speak from experience. Get out of it while you can. Can’t wait to see the new and improved stepchild!! Great video as always guys!
Its the 74weld rack and however they coded it...its not stock with a $5k experimental steering rack.
The billet rack is not the issue. 😊 For starters, this issue only ever happens in 4L (has never occurred in 4H or 2H). Doesn’t happen on the highway, Baja, high speed off road. Second, the electronic internals are all still the same, factory internals. Third, there’s nothing experimental about the 74weld rack. It’s just a stronger housing (again, it still uses all of the factory internals). Fourth, there are zero issues with the steering of the Braptor (both in general, and when these faults & limp mode occurs). 🙃 Gotta understand mechanics better before trying to randomly point fingers at inaccurate diagnoses.
The fact that your vehicle is having all of the codes is why I don't want new rides. The only things I want on a vehicle is cruse control, ac, and maybe a backup camera.
I looked for the video y’all mentioned about the land cruiser going into 8 feet of water but the only ones I could find were breaking through some ice.
In so far as it not allowing you to spin the tires... Did you have traction control turned off? The whole Bronco range are pretty stubbornly footed with it on.
Off, you can spin. Or in the modes that have it off already.
Maybe consider changing the parts that have any thing to do with the drive train 🚆 so you have the same set up as your Jeep 🚙.
