- Over the past few months there have been a number of sightings of a relatively rare FN MAG variant in the field in Ukraine. The KSP-58B has been seen in use with Ukrainian Armed forces since September, in this video we take a brief look at the KSP-58B's features, history and look at who transferred the guns to Ukraine.

It was Sweden that initiated the development of the FN MAG when sweden asked FN to develop a belt fed machinegun based on the BAR.
The FN Mag is basically an inverted BAR.
I asked the armorers at my local regiment last year and they said the 6,5mm barrels dissapeared 20 years ago.
Sweden even had actual beltfed BAR´s.
It's been over 20 years since I fired one of those, but watching that photage my hand could still feel the burn from absentmindedly grabbing the hot barrel during a barrel change.
Same, or self discharging rounds due to overheated barrel so I had to twitch the belt to stop so I could swap barrel, full send

Some of the guns shown in this video are definitely 100% Swedish origin. At 2:02 in the video we see a picture with 6 soldiers, a blue wan and a ksp58 on the ground. On the stock of the ksp58 you can see a white marking with some small black text on it. That is the Swedish tejp used to show when the last time it had a checked thoroughly by a army gunsmiths before going into storage. I wears of quite quick so it is directly from Sweden.
Your swedish pronunciation is actually really good. Sounds like someone that is a native English speaker but can speak Swedish fluently, I'm Really impressed!

Imagine in an alternate time line the Swedes would adopt both the FN MAG and G3 in 6.5 Swedish.

@@nzxt1234 We had plenty of FN MAG 6,5X55 in the Swedish Airforce when I was a youth cadet and conscript there. This is in the early to late 1980s ;-)
The original KSP58 was in 6,5*55. The B variant is in 7,62.
The thing is, the G3 didn't work as well rechambered in the 6.5×55mm iirc.
(The 6.5×55mm has a slightly larger ammount of powder as a 7.62×51mm with a smaller bullet)

Nice to see the KSP-58 in Ukrainian service. I fired and carried it a lot during my swedish army service back in 1993. Very reliable MG under controlled circumstances, a little less so in field conditions. We sometimes had problems with the belt missfeeding and even complete jams, after "fire & maneuver" drills made us slam the 58 into the ground a little too hard. It's also a fairly heavy gun to carry, almost 12 kg, without accessories. I remember my arms burning in pain after hauling it around for a few hours. May our old trusty 58s bring victory for Ukraine!
KSP-38 is even worse than KSP-58 but was the only machingun that could fit in the old tank Centurion at that time.

Killing it with the pronunciation! I got to use it quite a lot during my service in the late eighties. We had 7,62 barrels for live firing and 6,5x55 for blanks.

@@TheArmourersBench I’m not 100% sure but I think I remember we just swapped the barrels. The 6,5x55 blanks were not just crimped brass but used wood bullets to facilitate feeding. The blank barrels had a muzzle device that made sure the wooden "bullets" got destroyed but the muzzle blast was still no fun at close range.
@@TheArmourersBench the 7.62×51 and the 6.5×55 cartridges has the same rim and base diameter as well as the same taper towards the neck and a very similiar over all length, so only the barrels was changed.
And as the army eventually ran out of 6.5mm blanks, they just got the production switched to 7.62mm hollow wood bullets and retired the 6.5mm barrels.
The same blank firing desintegrator muzzle device screws onto the flash hider threads and so didn't need redesign either, and when the G3 was adopted as the Ak4, a blank firing desintegrator muzzle device was designed for it.
The 5.56 FN weapons also got desintegrator muzzle devices.
The kpist m/45 however, used plastic bullet blanks and it's 2.5mm 'parlor ammo barrel' with a desintegrator device.
The 2.5mm barrel without the desintegrator muzzle cap was designed to use tiny rounds where the casing was the percussion cap but zeroed so that a 15cm target at 10m equated a 6ft target at 100m.
@ Its main job is to ensure enough gas pressure, so the weapon will cycle.
Btw. In this video ammoboxes are not mounted on the weapon. Why is that? Is there no mount for them?
@@XtreeM_FaiL Not for the boxes but there was a cloth pouch for a 50 round belt segment that attached to the side.
I was also a Ksp shooter in the swedish army, it was a hell of a gun 👍
Sweden was THE first adopter of the FN-MAG. Sweden tried to make their own machine gun using a upside down Browning BAR but never really got it to work. So they approached FN with their idea and FNs engineers and technicians got the idea to work.
By mating it with the feed system and steel belt of the MG42/MG1
we have been first with alot of things, first with barret m82 for example, we also was first with the pansarskott m86 and carl gustaf m48 recoilless rifle (at4 and cg 84mm recoilless rifle) as it was created in sweden.

Though it could just be cheaper to make the stocks out of polymer nowadays...
But man nothing beats wood stocks...
Even like custom ones on m16s/(ar15 clones) and so many other firearms like mp5s and even putting them on newer shotguns just to have that cool look..
It's especially cool on newer weapons when it gives that retro future look...
@@JaykPuten Sweden did switch to a modernized version with plastic stock and picatinny rail (Ksp 58F). It is significantly lighter. But many Ksp 58B with wooden stocks and iron sights remain in service, and in storage.

Carried one for a couple of years a long time ago. Use the sling correctly then firing from the hip is easy enough and stable. More than able to sweep an area with in urban combat.
Sling over the head horizontal. Right arm goes through around and under, locked when the hand grips the pistol grip. Getting the sling the right length is key. Use a short belt of ammo.
Bit like how the Bren was carried.

Ah, the proud old Ksp 58... everybody loves it, except the guy who carries it :P
My cousins son carried one during his service and he hated it immensely... until he was firing it, and then he loved it... but went back to hating it when he had to carry it back to base again :P
and the ones cleaning it, especially after using the red wooden training rounds (I was told).
If you add a tracer round every three rounds it is easier to see where you hit. (probably easier to be spotted as well though)

I used the KSP 58 in my time in the Swedish army.
The user is using it correctly with intermittent bursts.
Though I cant se he used the second barrel, Thats used to be quick shift. To let the the hot barrel cool down. That ways, you can have continued fire for a very long time.

@@AK-qy5iw Its a bit heavy for offensive work. But a defensive beast. A loader/spotter, every 3-5 round being fosfor for help aiming. It can keep going for days

Funny thing here is, the ksp58s in the videos uses dissintegrating links for the ammo, as of we never had that in sweden for the ksp58. we have a metalllink contating 50 rounds, that can be fitted to one another.

Most likely the Ksp 58's were just supplied without the ammo. They're getting plenty of ammo from other sources.

I bet dissintegrating links come from American aid. Original reloadable Swedish or Danish links are included but they are pretty labor intensive to reload without reloading tool. Because Americans supply huge amounts of small arms ammo and they use preloaded dissintegrating links i think nobody bothers to reload original belts. There is also no modification needed to change from one to another. Both feed the same.
@@villon89 Sure, but there's already the Ksp 58 C2, which is set up to use disintegrating belts, so it's not a big deal and they might actually have gotten those. They look pretty much identical to the B.

Looks very similar to what I was trained on in the 1980s, Known as a LMG 7.62.. It has a nice punch as support weapon .
It’s all just different variations of the FN MAG.

ooooh-i used the 58 when i did my militarytraining..this brings backs memories,steelsight at 700 yard on half-figures, no problem,very good weapon whit barrels that can be changed in a copule of secounds..so not to overheat the barrel- just dont drop the hot one in snow😅

This machine gun is very similar to the machine gun I had when I served in the Dutch army! That was an FN MAG machine gun, automatic, air-cooled, light machine gun. Caliber: 7.62×51mm.

Really too heavy for the SAW role, that's why the Minimi/M249 exists.

I was a beast with that thing , we had one in every PBV302 as a mech inf unit , 200 rounds then change the barrel it just hissed when you throw it in the snow.
We had 4 barrels 2-6.5 and 2-7.62 mm for each KSP , 2 boxes and the 2 cassettes with 50 rounds each , should be in every big wooden box.

Remember having one jury rigged on the roof of our all terrain vehicles on a training exercise where would act as an invading force from the beach simulated foreign BMP’s. I was issued a lot of blanks and happily used them all. Man that gun was filthy after that and I wasn’t equally thrilled when I have to clean it out in the field later that evening.
A side note, we where allowed to dress up in other non Swedish military equipment as we where the “baddies” and even fix up our rides a bit. We used masking tape and taped U137 and a Soviet Hammer and Sickle (a Soviet Uboat had mysteriously ran aground in Swedish military waters just recently). Well … our officers was that thrilled as we supposed to be neutral and all so we had to remove that! Funny sh1t anyways!
Instruction was two fire in 10-15 round bursts , boxes could 200 rounds , cassettes with 50 rounds was used in dismounted combat advancing into object , three ksp58 and three CG 84mm AT weapon in each platoon.
@@HiznogoodThe story about using tape and "change" identity made me think of the Swedish movie 'Repmånad'. ("Rep month" a humorous, very "Swedish" classic movie from 1979.) Repetition for middle aged conscripts in peacetime. The scene is that it's an exercise, and they are defending the country, Sweden.
A "The bridge is blown up" sign is put up on a small bridge, when "our" guys came in a truck. They decide to neglect the sign, but are stopped by a guard. A discussion about how the bridge could be "blown up" when it obviously was there occurred, the guard argued that they couldn't tear down everything in civilian areas, just because it was "make believe" hit in the exercise. Our friends turn around and drive away. The guy who always thinks outside the box gets an idea.
After a while you can watch the truck driving towards the bridge again. Now with the word "HELIKOPTER" written on the side.
If you can play 'make believe", so can we!
Lasse Åberg, the writer of the movie, also acting, is a genius in his genre. (This is one of a series of films, but the following ones have another main character, with the same personality, probably based on how Lasse Åberg in some situations sees himself (I don't think he IS like that!), shy and awkward, still living with his mom, and extremely shy with women. This is the foundation of the humor in the movies, and other characters also pushed a little, being on the edge of parody, but so well balanced it rarely falls into that trap.
This was TOTALLY out of context, but I couldn't get the sight of the truck with "HELIKOPTER" written on it out of my head!
I believe every Swedish person reading this is smiling, absolutely not about my writing here, but thinking about the movie!

2:18 That one looks like it still has the yellow instruction text sticker on how to load it on the butt stock. Don't think the Balitcs put on their own text, and keeping the Swedish text on seems unlikely.
That's a good point, difficult to know. Perhaps service people from the Baltic will let us know.

In the clip while loading he lets the bolt forward, anyone know if the bolt needs to be to the rear or the KSP-58 is upgraded with a spring loaded roller (like an M240) or flexible roller guide rail?
Afaik, the bolt needs to be retracted on the Ksp58 as it's the first FN MAGs that were ever adopted however, the bolt handle is non reciprocating and not spring loaded, so what he does is that he retracts the bolt and then pushes the handle to it's spring latch retained forward position, the bolt stays retracted.
The first few dozen of the ksp58s were made in Liege, the rest was licence built in Eskilstuna, freeing up FNs factories to fulfil their national obligations to the Belgian army.

The word " Kulspruta" Is maybe a easy way to say "bullet spray" A Gun that is spraying bullets (fast).
I think that these KSP-58B maybe from the old scrapped S-tank They did have 2 or 3 mounted inside that was able to demount and fit whit the wooden stock.
Two coaxial plus one on the commanders manually remote controlled hatch mount, so one Ksp58 for each crewman! 🤣

Sweden have also sent thousands of body armor and helmets and will be sending the Ukrainians winter uniforms. cold weather clothing.
To convert the FN MAG/M240 into the 277 caliber, do you just need to change the barrel?
Given the case diameter is the same as 7.62×51 it probably will be. Might be some tweaks to the gas system needed.
How interchangeable are the components with other FN-MAG variants? For example, if your KSP-58 needs a barrel change, and all you have are M240 barrels (or vice-versa), will they work?
Great question, I'm not sure how close the Swedish factory stuck to the original TDP for the MAG I'm afraid. I'd be surprised if there wasn't interchangeability.
@@TheArmourersBench Hi, guy currently serving in the Swedish armed forces and gun nut here, they are identical to the original TDP, the first batches of KSP 58 that the army got in the beginning were actually produced by FN while we got our production line up and running and have parts interchangeability with the originals as well with other FN MAG's. the only thing that wont be interchangeable between a lot of the MAG variants are the individual parts of the gas regulators, since for example the KSP 58 have a 8 setting one and the original M240 only had one so on....
But what to be on the lookout for are the feed trays, as you can see in some of the clips the KSP 58 uses (to this day) Semi- disintegrating belts (DM 1 Belts) and requires a new feed tray to be able to reliably use M13 disintegrating belts. as you can see at 3:29 the feed tray is black, which means that is a upgraded one since no original KSP 58 feed tray are black, they are all silver. feel free to contact me if you have any more questions about Swedish equipment.

@@erinil0905 In homeguard exercises, my former unit was occationally issued NATO factory belted m13 linked ammo in 250rnd cardboard boxes left over after multi-national exercises, and as far as I could see, our Ksp58Bs ate those up just as reliably as they ate up the well used 49+1 round modular DM1 belts...
@@SonsOfLorgar yeah it works, but there is an greater risk that the empty M13 links get stuck, I've used M13 links and they do work, I'm not saying that they don't. But the feed trays have different geometries for a reason and that is increased reliability.

Can you do a video on the polish grom in Ukraine
These machine guns use the M13 link and the swedish KSP58/B uses a belt with 49 cartridges, (i think its equivalent to DM1). I don’t think the Swedish Armed Forces would modify them to feed M13 link before shipping them, so that points towards a Baltic state.
You can use both types of links and it would still operate.
You mention Sweden was an early adopter of the FN MAG. Actually, we were the first adopter, and we were the ones who asked FN to design this. We had the BAR, the Browning Automatic Rifle. But that one used mags, it wasn't belt fed. We wanted a belt fed BAR. So FN, who had the European rights for Browning designs, was asked to make a belt fed BAR for us, which they did - the KSP 58! Then FN figured that hey, this gun actually seems nice, maybe we could sell this to other customers. And the rest is history, as they say.

Surprised to not see any slings on those ksp58's. I would never use one without it. Especially when firing from the hip lol, because you're supposed to use the carry handle to push down while firing, else you won't hit anything!
This is accurate machinegun. I shot one and hit targets up to 400 meters, though i dont have any special training. Also from my experience i can tell that you need to stick velcro fully around your sleeves when shooting, because those hot cases will burn your skin really bad if they fly inside.
Barrel is replaceable. Two are brought to mitigate overheating.
What an interesting sound it makes. I only ever heard it mentioned but never seen or heard it. Quite interesting to see it now on the battlefields in Ukraine. Hope it will serve the UAF well!
Hopefully Sweden is sending Archer artillery system soon

Ksp-36 is the real thing. Watercooled, can be fired all day long. Ksp-58 has to switch barrel after 250 rounds due to the risk of overheating, if I remember correctly. The gun usually came with to barrels so that you can switch back and forth

as estonian i have used, cleaned and maintained the ksp-58 its a good mg. but i would prefer mg3, nothing can beat the germans in their own "game"

Since the Ukrainian Military uses the FN MAG in both M240 & KSP-58 versions can the barrels of M240 fit in the KSP-58 Swedish version of M240B or not? Another thing that the Ukrainians can do is ask FN to see if they can make a 7.62x54R FN MAG
The barrels can be used yes, some differences with the components of the gas system according to a servicing Swedish soldier. NATO would prefer to see Ukraine move towards using NATO standard calibres so they'll probably leave the 54R for the large numbers of PKs and PKMs they have.
@@TheArmourersBench Thanks for the Information if Ukraine does adapt NATO 5.56 & 7.62x51 cartridges we would have seen a UK SAS SBS French GIGN German KSK and US Delta Force Navy Seals Marine Recon special Forces soldier use a Malyuk in 5.56x45 with the donor rifle being a Polish or Bulgarian 5.56x45mm AK.
@@TheArmourersBench For 7.62x54R conversion it would require to many parts to be changed. For an example 54R is rimmed, so new bolt and feedtray and so on it would be simpler to buy either PKM/PKPs or to just buy more 7.62x51.

Thanks again, brilliant video. We had them as the MAG58 for a number of years until the M240 came into service. I could hear the cheers when they took the 58 off the gunners as they do have a bit of weight in them.
The American 240B is a FN MAG 58. It also weighs more than the MAG 58. Same gun.
I’ve shot about 4 billion shots with that. Fun gun to shot. Whatch out for an overheated barrel.

Ksp-58 is stil in use in the Swedish military! why? we dont look for a Buzz sawmachine gun! we want a relaibillity and accurate ! short busts with high accurate! Ksp-58 is fantastic! I did natiol service as special forces as Lappland ranger! in Sweden when I was 18 til 20!

They aren't standard KSP58B's as we don't use disintegrating link belt.. the feedtray needs to be modified/changed.. Sweden was also the first user , we tried to make a belt fed machinegun but had issues so Sweden asked FN for "help"..

These were most likely from the baltic states. A friend of mine, who unfortunately fell in battle in april, had been equipped with the swedish kulsprutepistol m/45 (Swedish-K) with estonian markings on the case and wooden grip.
I have seen photos of a couple of those, very interesting to see those pop up. Sorry to hear about your friend.
