    I'm glad there are no international airports on any of those islands. Imagine thinking you've scored a cheap ticket to Tokyo, only to arrive on an island in the middle of nowhere.

      @@auxiliarypowerunit I feel a little awkward now, because you seemingly took my comment seriously and did me the courtesy of making a serious reply. As people familiar with Ryanair will know, while the European low - cost carrier (based out of Dublin, Ireland) are famous for their 'dirt - cheap' fares, they are notorious for their 'no - frills' policy, and what might be called 'hidden extras', except that there's little 'hidden' about them, given that they almost make a virtue of the policy. A ticketing model that might be described as "We can take you there for €20. Of course you can look elsewhere, but if you do you'll find our price has gone up to €30..!" Electronic - only boarding passes; pay - by - weight carry - on luggage; NO complimentary food or drinks etc... As a matter of fact, it wasn't that long ago that 'love him or hate him, you can't ignore him' CEO Michael O'Leary suggested charging for the use of toilets on board! (There was more to it than a simple bladder levy, and was most probably in part, a publicity stunt; but no - he wasn't joking!) It is against this "Squeeze... Squeeze Hard! background that Ryanair have a reputation for flying into airports that might not necessarily be those that immediately - or even upon some consideration - come to mind with reference to one's destination city. For example, while Ireland's 'national' carrier, the unfortunately named Aer Lingus, flies into (London) Heathrow, Ryanair flies to Stansted, 3 times as far away, and with significantly more tenuous connections. Stansted isn't even a great example, since Ryanair are amongst some quite respectable company in using that airport, Heathrow and Stansted being just two of, I believe, 7 official 'London' airports now! Again though, if one takes Paris, I don't believe Ryanair use Orly _OR_ Charles de Gaulle, favouring... ah... favouring... ->?!?

      @@AxxLAfriku I finally did it. I out-pizza'd the Hut. It was the greatest mistake of my life. After years of perfecting my recipe, I made my way down to the local hut, fresh-baked pizza pie in hand. "Try this," I told the kid working the counter. He did, and he had to agree that it was better than anything Pizza Hut had to offer. Soon, the entire store, customers included, was feasting on my delicious pie. The manager walked over, grabbed a slice, and took a bite. I look at him, anticipation rising. This was the boss, the local fief lord of the Hut. His approval meant more to me than all the rest combined. He took a bite and nodded. "I'll be damned," he said, "you really did it. You out-pizza'd the Hut. Shame." Shame? I threw a chair at the manager and scrambled out of the Pizza Hut, not even bothering to see if my missile hit its mark. I was closely pursued by the manager, who had gotten his hands on a deadly sharp pizza cutter. I suspected in his hands it would cut more than pizza. Yes, that was it, just a crazy man with a gun. It had to be. My phone rang. Sister. I picked it. "They're dead, she sobbed. They're all dead. M-mom, dad, Chris, Bill. Dead. They killed them all." I could barely understand her, so great were her sobs. "What do you mean? Where are you?" I asked urgently. "How is this possi-" a single gunshot sounded through my phone's speakers. Silence. Then, I heard a man's voice. "No one out-pizzas the Hut." He hung up. I drove down the empty county road, mind blank. I had nothing. They killed my family. I was alone. At that moment I knew what I had to do. They took everything from me. Well then, I would take everything from them. Pizza Hut was so terrified of being out-pizza'd, they forgot there's one thing worse than a man with a recipe: A man with nothing to lose. I agree with Adam (アダム is actually Adam in Japanese) - you did much better than most foreigners who have not lived here. The only one that made me cringe was Edo (the E should be like in "bed", not "bead"). The sound in "bead" is also a Japanese vowel, but written with "i" (which you said more like the "i" in "pin", but somehow that doesn't bother me as much when I hear it). So how you pronounced Edo would actually be "ido", which means well (a hole with water in it).
      Challenges even for foreigners who live here are R and long/short vowels. What is written in the roman alphabet as R is actually a cross between a European R (not American) and L, with perhaps even a bit of D mixed in. When followed by a Y it gets even harder (like a bigger southern island chain - the Ryuukyuu Islands), but I don't think you had any RY in your video. Secondly, syllable timing is very important in Japanese, and double vowels are two syllables. Romanization systems don't agree on how to write a long O (and other vowels, but O is the most common one) - writing them as "oo" would cause many Westerners to mispronounce them like "u", "oh" looks funny in the middle of words (but is done in some cases, like names on baseball jerseys), and "ō" is hard to type on a computer. So most of the time people don't bother, which turns into pronunciation confusion. If I were to write the long ones as "ō", some of the words Adam mentioned would be: Tōkyō, Todōfuken, Ōshima, and Hachijō.

      @@catriamflockentanz It's wrong (although "Tokio" is essentially how most people outside of Japan pronounce "Tokyo" for whatever reason, even though there is no "i" in there at all). Also the syllable length is wrong (Tokyo should really be written as Tōkyō or toukyou), but that's getting a bit nit-picky. As Sam has said, Tokyo is the only prefecture rich enough to actually adminster these islands. Without Tokyo's revenues propping up these island municipalities (whose main income is tourism), these islands would have become uninhabited long ago.
    As for why Tokyo is the only one rich enough, that's down to Japan's declining and aging population combined with pretty much everyone moving to Tokyo to live and work. So the other prefectures are simply too depopulated and poor to afford maintaining these islands.

    Eh, you did fine pronunciation-wise. Not Japanese-speaker level perhaps but nothing egregious. Luckily, Japanese is actually one of the easiest to pronounce languages, especially since there are only like 20 phonemes you need to know. English has double that amount and famously the orthography doesn't correspond very well with the phonology. Japanese, on the other hand, is close to perfect when it comes to matching phonology and orthography, ESPECIALLY in romaji. The only ones better I know of are some Polynesian languages which have a similarly low amount of phonemes. And maybe like Korean, which has a lot more but hangul was intentionally and artificially crafted to fit the language like a glove.

    In the interest of increasing Sam's TH-cam algorithm score, I will nitpick about his description of ku. Ku ( ward in English) is used outside of Tokyo also. I live in Kanagawa-ken, Kawasaki-shi, Takatsu-ku. Although it is pretty small (a couple of hundred thousand people) compared to the 23 special wards ( what most people think of as the city of Tokyo) in Tokyo which have populations in the millions.

    • @AlohaBiatch
      @AlohaBiatch 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be more pedantic, Tokyo's wards referred to as 特別区 (special wards) because they function like their own cities.
      Their population is never in the millions however. Out of the 23 special wards the one with the highest population is setagaya ward with about 900k people. Chiyoda ward the least populous has only 58000 people.

In other words, the United States Army _technically_ invaded Tokyo in early-1945, and the famous picture of US soldiers raising their flag was _technically_ taken in Tokyo!

Prince Edward and Marion Islands are both in the Cape Town magisterial district and are considered as in the ward of the port - so while the municipality doesn't really do anything on or for the islands (but then again its not clear municipalities deliver services to anybody) the islands more than 2000km (or 1200 miles for people who walk to make it to somebodies door or are yanks) are considered part of a ward in the City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality.

    • @EduardoEscarez

      They are part of the region, but not at municipality nor provincial level; while with the Juan Fernandez archipelago (where Robinson Crusoe island is part of) is part of the Province of Valparaiso. And then we have the Desventuradas Islands, that are part of the Juan Fernandez Island.
      So, we have a commune, Juan Fernandez, that is two archipelagos (Juan Fernandez and Desventuradas) separated by 800 km, and part of a province that is 700 km of distance. And then a commune and province (Rapa Nui) that also manages another island 391 km apart (Sala y Gomez) and is over 3600 km apart from its region.
      And with Rapa Nui, probably one of the few cases of a sub-national administrative body (the Region of Valparaiso) that is present in two different continents (South America and Oceania)
