Narita has also another weird thing in the middle of the airport: A temple. Toho-jinja is right in the middle of the airport, open for visits. It's at the tip of the runway 34R. Runway is also shorter than the other runway because of the temple.

That's not really weird. Japan has temples and shrines all over the place. You can even find them inside high traffic areas, tourist destinations, train stations and even airports.

Funny thing, subsequent Japanese airports are built on reclaimed land, and I can't help but think that this debacle was one of the motivations why. It can be closer to the city center if we build it in the bay, and no one is currently farming on it cause it's not there yet.

The history is much darker and deeper. I grew up in Yachimata, near by city of Narita. The original plan was to build an airport there, but there were protests so bad by farmers, people started dying, so they had to move the construction to Narita. There were farmer terrorists up to like 10 years ago trying to bomb the airport and airplanes (with people in) after the construction, and had to have security gaurds surrounding the airport for decades. The Japanese government still holds grudge against Yachimata after more than half century, no company in Yachimata is allowed to operate for the airport, and no direct tain is accessible to the airport.

You missed the best part of this story. When the new runway opened, I took a flight from LAX to Narita (not the best part) and upon taxi back to the terminal I saw a sign that said "Fuck Narita Airport" that he had posted. I believe it is still there. It is visible in your footage at 4:43

In the end, an intl terminal was built at Haneda in 2010 so intl traffic is split between the two airports again
Haneda never stopped taking international flights. Just that the international flights permitted after Narita opened until Haneda started expanding into Tokyo Bay were limited to "scheduled charter" flights limited in distance to the longest domestic flight. So only covering Korea, and parts of north east China.
Yeah but still mostly domestic flights. Only huge airports have flights to Haneda, therefore I never used it. If I go domestic I prefer trains.

My mother heard it was due to security concerns at Narita given the angry farmers there, and as a result Narita's authorities insist on having the airport closed during late night periods

Funnily enough, in Kanto ( the area around Tokyo ), yo is often used at the end of sentences. If the show was about Kansai ( the area around Osaka ), it wouldn't work. It's an East West thing yo :D

@@dimesonhiseyes9134, actually for those in the know you don't have to count the stars to see the difference between the two flags, if the stars are offset in the next row this is a 50 star current USA flag (star rows are 6,5,6,5,6,5,6,5,6 for 9 rows total) whereas the 48 star flag is six horizontal rows of 8 stars each (8,8,8,8,8,8 for 6 rows total) nor are the stars offset but form straight columns of 6 stars each. At a glance if stars offset it's 50 star flag; if not it's the 48 star flag. Sorry for being that guy (LOL).

I still remember the day I first went to narita airport for my flight back home.
I was on the train to narita airport, when there was an announcement to be careful of terrorist and there was police of sort patrolling about. Alarmed, I went online hoping to find some kind of news, only to find out that the notice is always there due to narita's controversial history.
At my job, I make thematic world maps. When we classify airports, we have to make sure no agriculture has been classified within its boundaries. It would have been awesome if this video was out when we were mapping Japan, so I could have put agriculture in an airport and been totally justified to do it.

Haneda was only made mostly domestic-only. While most airlines moved to Narita in 1978, Taiwanese airlines (Most notably China Airlines) continues to fly to Haneda. EVA Air (Also Taiwanese) started flying to Haneda in 1999.
Also, flights to Honolulu Hawaii were not stopped or moved to Narita in 1978.
It's also worth noting that in 2010, Haneda opened a 3rd terminal dedicated to international flights, and has been becoming more internatonal since 2010.

You forgot that Haneda Airport expanded bringing international flights again. The express train lines to have the shortest trips possible whether to ride the Narita Express or Keisei Skyliner.
farmlands are considered as mothers in many cultures, because they give everything that we sow in the land. plus its heritage land so why not protect it for future generations.
Half Moon Bay Airport in California also has a farm in the middle of it, but since it's a very small airport with no control tower they don't have tunnels to get to it. The tractors just drive across the taxiway.

There is a highway in/near Osaka, Japan that goes through a building. In Chongqing, China, monorail trains go through a building. I’ve never heard of high speed trains doing this though.
I assume you mean the Gate Tower Building. The result of a business refusing to back down from its plans to build a 16-story office building just because the city wanted to put a highway offramp there.
The Japanese socialists have had a rough century, so it makes sense they would stick to their guns so hard in this case. After briefly flourishing in the early 20th century, they were cracked down upon by the nationalists in the 20s and 30s, and then the US came by, crushed the Nationalists finally, and before they could finish cheering the war board was like "We don't want any of that commie scum gaining influence!" so they teamed up with a lot of the same nationalists they had just fought to stomp the socialists again, albeit with less murder this time. By the time the US left, the predominant power was the LDP, a center-right party that hated the left and they have maintained power for the vast majority of the time since then, especially up to when this airport was being built.
The socialists couldn't actually accomplish much, so they fought HARD against this, and even when they lost they were able to convince one farmer to give a giant "fuck you" to the government in a way they could do nothing about.
LDP really only lost election once but they quickly regained back their seats and it seems they will still continue on. Funnily in these recent 2 decades, Shinzo Abe is kinda the only Japan PM who lasted at least few years before being forced down.
I have no sympathy for terrorists who tried to bomb airplanes full of people.

These farmers are actually disliked by the locals.
The majority of the locals have accepted the airport as their precious economic resource, while these farmers still fight against what’s been there for 40 years already.
Their farm is a serious obstacle to development plans of the airport, which slows down the local economy.
I don’t blame the locals for disliking these guys...

The NRT northern runway only has 2/3's of its planned length usable due to a farmhouse cutting off part of it. Which reduces the amount of aircraft which can use the shorter then planned runway. There are also issues because of the bend in the main taxiway to that runway. Having to go around the farm means the taxiway bends into the safety area of the runway, which slows down traffic on both the runway and taxiway.
At least they stopped doing ID checks on everyone entering the airport a few years ago... (ID checks trying to prevent the protesters from getting into the terminals)

Our Airport in Durban, South Africa (King Shaka International) also has a farm which supplies fruit and vegetables for export, vegetables are farmed, harvested and exported as soon as possible.

One update, Haneda isn't domestic only anymore. But it is only for local region. You won't really find super long distance flights, but some across the ponds to Korea, China and Taiwan are easy enough to find.

Biggest thing now though is that NRT still found a way to expand the stubby runway that's next to Shito-san's property and found land for a 3rd runway. So, that farm is likely to stay there as long as it wants as the airport can finally have room for growth.

I’m kinda liking the different way this video was hrmm, presented. The script for it, it’s a like a new style for HAI, loving it. From start to the sponsorship.
Keep in mind the Japanese government offered more than 3~4 times the price for their land.
Now today the opposition is minuscule and a lot of former opposition wants the airport to expand so there's more money flowing into the city of Narita. *eyeroll*
I tried Backblaze and it wasn't very good. For example there is no ability to turn off C drive backup, which is a huge privacy concern, and it doesn't allow permanent storage of anything, so if it's deleted from your computer you better recover it within 30 days, or the data is gone for good. Also it has trouble with external drives, network drives, etc. - for that you need to pay extra, which makes it much more expensive than competitors. Eventually I went with iDrive instead, and although it has drawbacks, it's light years ahead of Backblaze in the value it gives.

@@hmartim Well, to work those apps HAVE to store the passwords on their servers. Most of them store them encrypted, but keep the master password to themselves.
And they are legally required to forfeit the passwords to NSA or similar organization in most countries. They are also typically legally required to never tell anyone they did that.
NSA can be (and is) manipulated by the government. USA government is currently run by a person who - if he wasn't the president - would be imprisoned as a legally convicted criminal. Since the government and Republican party support him, both are necessarily corrupt.
In other words, the passwords in USA-based apps are in the hands of known criminals. Other countries often have similar problems.
Even if that is not the case for a particular country, you are unable to make sure that your passwords cannot be simply sold by the company that is supposed to store them. I have not heard of any successful security+privacy audits of those companies, and for a good reason.
If you want a really secure password manager, use a well-known open-source one (not 100% foolproof, but if it has flaws someone would likely notice that eventually), its database should be encrypted with a master-password. You can then synchronize the database using any (non-secure) file-sharing service such as google drive. Master password has to be memorized.
Most widely-used and stable open-source password-manager is currently KeePass.

Fun twist on a story that many of us who have been flying out of Narita for decades know well. I remember how all cars and buses into the airport were boarded and inspected for bombs and terrorists. Up until the 1990s, the train platforms didn’t actually terminate directly below the airport... you had to take a bus to the terminal from the airport station because the builders were unable to secure all land rights.

Going to Narita really sucks. The few times I've been able to go to Haneda instead of Narita was a godsend. The 90min train ride from the airport after a 18+ hour flight has always annoyed me.
