    My favorite line from The Wire, which takes place near those row houses, is when a tourist asks " Do you know where the Poe house is?" And the young man replies," Poe house? Man look around they all Po' houses!"

    I've never realized how depressing the city of Baltimore actually is. So much rundown and abandoned. I thought Dan Bell always sought out these abandoned places, but it turns out they're actually all around him.

      Hilary Peddigree Baltimore city has its places but the city as a whole really isn't that bad.

      Like all cities, Baltimore has some very nice parts of town, and some very run down parts of town. Like a lot of very old colonial cities, the older parts of historical interest ended up in the poorer part of town. Unlike some other cities, however, when given the choice to rejuvenate it's historical section or modernize a tourist area, Baltimore chose the second thing. I love the Hell out of the Inner Harbor. It has the National Aquarium! And The Power Plant! (No longer an actual power plant.) And Camden Yards! I can happily spend days there. And the Poe house? Is literally three blocks away from the harbor.

    I'm a researcher doing a story on Poe so I've watched and read a lot. You guys did a really great job with background and details. I don't know if you guys compare content, but I gotta say, you're light years ahead of your 'competition'. Thanks for all the hard work. Much appreciated.

    Sights of urban decay always intrigue me. I always think of how the buildings and neighborhoods were once vibrant and the essential part of their resident's lives. Now they're just eroding memories. Very interesting. Thanks for documenting.

    In a twist of irony that I think Poe would have gotten a bit of a chuckle out of, in 2014 if memory serves me correctly, The Poe House Museum closed (briefly) for lack of funds (for maintenance and staff salaries mainly). Only one man, a care taker/maintenance worker, continued to be paid during the closing. Somebody, somewhere in the city government, apparently ignorant of who Poe was and what he meant to Baltimore, got the bright idea to tear the house down and sell the lot to the highest commercial bidder. My wife and I stopped at The Poe House one day following her cancer treatment, not knowing it was closed to the public at that time. We spoke very briefly with the caretaker and were stunned to hear about the city's intentions to tear the house down. Once we got back home I fired up the internet machine and looked for any recent news articles about The Poe House and it's possible fate but found very few that contained any more detail than what we had received from the caretaker. At least one of the Baltimore TV stations HAD done a story on the house and a cameraman and reporter had been given a tour of the interior. Due most likely to the TV story, the city quickly dropped the idea of tearing the house down and funds suddenly materialized to keep the doors open so to speak. The last I recall hearing, was that a large donation had been made through a law firm in Baltimore though the person or persons responsible preferred to remain anonymous.....Much like the mysterious person who has been visiting Mr. Poe's grave for many years now with flowers and brandy.....

      Thanks Steve G. I hope I don't have my years mixed up as we made the trip to and from Aberdeen and Baltimore many times between 2012 and 2016 before we got the chance to stop at The Poe House during "business hours". As avid readers my wife and I were very disappointed that we were unable to take a tour and shocked to discover that the house was in danger of being demolished by the city. Had I not talked to a neighbor of ours who was born and raised in Baltimore I would never have known about much of what I remarked on above. Hopefully The Poe House Museum will remain open and flourish in the years to come!

    • @MrBulwer
      @MrBulwer 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      During the brief closing there was never EVER a chance of it being torn down. It was closed due to a change of ownership. There was no caretaker at the house during this transition. There was no large donation from an attorney. Poe Baltimore was formed to take control of the site. It is now open to the public after renovations.

    Awesome, one of my favorite short stories of all time is, The Cask of Amontillado, by Poe:) He was the first author I started reading as an 11-year-old boy, and still find myself reading from time to time today. Of course, I wouldn't list everything I enjoy from Poe, but even his personal letters he wrote to family, friends and lovers are intriguing.

    I am reminded of the Poe Toaster that used to leave wine and roses on the grave of Edgar Allen Poe on his birthday every year, for seven decades! They even tried locking the cemetery gate and yet, the mysterious person would manage to place the gifts there. And then finally, after many years, a reporter managed to photograph a person wearing a trench coat and hat, placing the gifts. The capture made the news! I had to look this up, I think there is a new "Poe Toaster" making the yearly toast as of 2016.

    Hung out in Baltimore years ago with my brother doing construction and getting drunk. We had so much fun then. It was popular to leave booze on Poe's grave or so we thought. My favorite is Babe Ruth house a couple of blocks over, don't forget to cover it. Then of course many debacles at Camden yards and the Orioles. Eating food at Lexington market. But had to leave so many memories and raise kids and so on. Thanks for the vid dude.

    Adam, Good to see you and Dan Bell working together this week. Give him a push and tell him we want Another Dirty Room! Maybe you can get in on that too.

    Rubbings are really popular at monuments such as the World War II memorial or 9/11 memorial that are full of names. Often relatives or new generations will rub over the name to keep it. They even provide little slips of paper and pencils in Washington D.C. at several places.

    Very interesting tour! I too often wonder what small things can change the course of history. Like you said, who knows what would have happened if he had not received that $50?
