This stuff really works on very thick hair around armpits and bikini areas. Did nothing for my face or legs, I have used it for many years, until the battery just stopped working. It was the first Lumea made by Phillips.
You may find the newer models work better. I have dark hair so it has worked well for me on all areas - although, as shown, I do still have some hair on my legs but it is sparse. I had IPL in a clinic over 19 years ago now which didn’t work well so the technology seems to have improved.

Hi. You’re just using exactly the same routine as I used on my legs for your face - so roughly every couple of weeks to begin with to tie in with your hair growth cycle.
So looking at the Philips website they say based on average usage for one user, the device should last 'years'. But they ask customers to contact them if there is a problem. After the initial more intensive period of treatment you're only really using it monthly - and less than that longer term, so you should get years of use out of it.

@@thehonestchannel well I honestly didn't pay much attention to the growing direction during shaving and stuff. The other thing is that, at a clinic it will last waaay longer, then again reshoots at the clinic can be as expensive as buying a new Lumea. You can use it straight after shaving and I had very little skin sensitivity with it so moisturiser is fine straight after. I would do a skin patch test first time though.
I’ve used it a couple of times on my upper lip and it has reduced regrowth. The bottom line with this device is that it works well on darker hair anywhere on the face or body.
Hi, thank you for such detailed reviews, most helpful thing I've found about this so far! Quick question if you don't mind, not sure if would be covered in instruction booklet or not, on my legs I've only ever shaved up to my knee, my regrowth was always much worse than my natural hair before ever shaving. If I wanted to treat my whole legs including upper legs/thighs, would I need to shave that first do you reckon, or could I treat it as is? Thank you!
Thanks Amy! You should always shave before using an IPL device to get the best result - but from the first treatment you will see the hair thinning out so you won’t mind shaving so much : ). I use a cheap electric shaver now to catch any stragglers.

Thanks for this review!! Really detailed 👌 I am considering purchasing this and want to achieve the same goal as you which I know you haven't quite reached in this follow up review. I am keen to know how much closer you are to reaching it now that its been another couple of months? Thanks :)
Hi Lauren. I'm not hair free but have very little hair on my legs now and virtually none under my arms. I'll be filming an update at the beginning of May.
Hi. I haven't seen any evidence of that. I've also not had any issues with skin sensitivity having used it fortnightly for over two months now. That said, it's recommended we wear sunscreen before exposing our skin to the sun anyway so you could do that to guard against harmful effects.
Hi Gemma. It was highly effective on my under arm hair. It works very well on darker, thicker hair - it's those finer lighter ones that are tougher to get rid of.
Hi. I think ideally you should wait a day or two after using the device before exposing treated areas to direct sunlight. I’d always recommend using a higher SPF in any case : )
Hi from Greece. I dont understand something. Does it destroy the hair follicle or not? If i use it for lets say 3 months, will my hair come back if i dont use it after this 3 month period? Is it permanent hair removal tool or , just delays hairs from growing?
Hello Is it effective for facial hair because of pcos? As just a huge reduction in hair growth after laser treatment but now I'm again facing facial hair growth and for every month itx not possible to go for laser...
Shaving is probably easiest and you can use the device straight afterwards. If you wax then you need to wait 24 hours before IPL because it requires some hair growth in the follicle in order to work.
Hi. If you check the skin tone guide in the description that should help you decide whether this is right for you. It works best on darker hair and lighter skin tones.
Hi thank you for the video . I have bought the same one mainly for my upper lip and chin , I don't like shaving my face I normally use tweezers, does it work if I use that instead of shaving? thanks
Yes, according to the manufacturer. You just need to wait 24hours after tweezing to allow a little bit of hair regrowth beneath the skin before using the device.
I do a half leg at a time, running it in strips and working my way round. I will inevitably go over some bits twice and likely miss others but it’s not a big issue. You can get the bits you missed (and therefore has hairs growing back) next time : )
@@thehonestchannel thank you so much for quick answer. Today I used 1st time as a patch test after watching your video. It's results looks better. Your videos are very informative. Thank you once again and God bless you 💕🌹😘
Hi. IPL uses light (intense pulsed light) rather than laser. It works by heating up the pigment in your hair and the root, sending the follicle into a resting phase.
Yes, in the early stages review I talk about testing the device on a small area of skin to check for sensitivity. I had no problems and no ingrowns : )
I don’t think hair will ever grow back as thick again after using it frequently, but it’s semi-permanent as you need to keep using the device around once a month longer term. Some people feel they don’t have to do that. It varies. I use it once a month on my legs to maintain results
My Philips IPL Lumea Advanced just died after 3 years of use :( I heard "boom" two times and the light doesn't come out anymore, even though it turns on and the fan works. I bought it in Europe for 150 Euros so I'm still satisfied with the lifetime but I wouldn't buy for the crazy high US price! Does anybody have experience with any cheaper IPLs, like in the $150-200 range?
Hi. The two-week treatment recommendation is based on the hair regrowth cycle, but it's not dangerous to do a weekly session, it just may be more efficient to let remaining hair grow back in then shave and do a treatment (if that makes sense).
Hi. I’m afraid it doesn’t work on darker skin tones. To check, I’ve included a link to Philips’ skin tone guide in the video description. Hope that helps.
Hi, I tan quite often with creams and mouses. Will I have to remove all tan before going forward with the treatment? If this is the case then how when can I tan after my treatment?x
Hi. I discuss how often I used it in the video if you want more info, but I used it 5 times, every two weeks and will now move on to monthly. The recommendation is to use it three to four times every two weeks to begin with and then go monthly.
Plz I have a question I did lazer on my face and it was the worst decision ever I had hair regrowth all on my face and my chin after 5 sessions so plz I want to buy this device and started at home it would help me ??? I going through a depression right now because of this plz ?
Hi Mimi. Sorry to hear you’re feeling low - and that you had a bad experience with lazer hair removal. It’s very difficult for me to say if this would work for you, but what I can say is that in my experience this is effective at decreasing hair growth for those with darker hair and lighter skin. I’ve included a link to Philips’ guide to the skin tones and hair colour suitable for this device so take a look before making your decision.
The Honest Channel yes I think it will work for me because my hair becomes dark hair and very noticeable on my face and my chin and my skin tone according to Philips’ guide I’m on number 3 or 2 so I think it will work that’s why I want to stop doing lazer on my dermatologist and buy this device all I want is to be free from this hair for at least 2 weeks than I will do it again at home
@@mimizmn8080 There will be a gradual reduction in hair growth which should become much more noticeable after your third or fourth time of using the device twice monthly. Really hope it works out for you.

Hi. The Lumea absolutely does work so I have no hesitation in telling you that. The big thing to check before buying though is that it will work for your skin tone. There is a chart you can look at here to keep you right www.philips.co.uk/c-f/XC000003324/is-philips-lumea-suitable-for-all-skin-and-hair-types
@@thehonestchannel I wanted the Phillips but it’s too expensive. I don’t want to spend 500 for something that doesn’t work. I already did that with the Tria. The silkinsensepil worked only for some of my thighs and underarms. I wanted something to reduce my arm hair like 50% at least ,
@@maybay8248 If a product doesn’t work as advertised you are within your rights to request a refund. If you bought it on a credit card you could also talk to your card provider about that.
@@thehonestchannel Yes, but it takes time for the machine to work and they only gave me 60 days. They should have given me a year to try it. Because of that I only buy used ones on ebay in case they don’t work. I’d rather lose 50-70 dollars then lose 500. The Phillips is expensive even used on EBay that’s why I didn’t purchase it.
That would depend on the sensitivity of your skin but I have used mine regularly on setting 3 and gone over areas at least twice in the same sessions with no problems.
Please I need a response does any brand of ipl hair removal devices give the same result because in my country I can't get a certain brand my options are limited
I’ve only used this one and have shared my results in this review for others to judge whether it’s right for them. My experience is it works on darker hair but it’s worth checking the skin tone guide www.philips.co.uk/c-f/XC000003324/is-philips-lumea-suitable-for-all-skin-and-hair-types

Doctors in clinics say that it's not effective such as laser sessions in clinics They say it's only effective for maintenance (after having 6-8 sessions at clinics) but not effective alone What do you think ?
At home devices will be less powerful than those in clinics, but they are way less expensive and I’m pleased with the result. I have a friend who got IPL on her armpits in a clinic and has never had to shave them since. The hair has completely stopped growing. With the Lumea the hair on my arm pits has thinned hugely and grows very sparsely - but I suspect that’s the difference. There is still some hair there. I’m going to useful it for a full year though and report back on the long-term results. Long answer! Hope that helps
is this good for Brazilian bikini or areolas/nipples? I weirdly have few hairs there and just an embarrassment to have it done in a salon (legs and armpits already covered by a laser professionally! woo hoo). thank you :)
I recently published a comparison between this IPL device and a laser one. I found the laser - which has a small head - better for treating smaller areas but you can use either very close to but not directly on genitals and nipples.
I’d like to know how this lady’s vision is a year later, there’s no way in hell I’d even turn that thing on without good quality laser glasses to protect my eyes and wouldn’t even think about putting that near my face
@@thehonestchannel I have now, and thank you for replying….I wasn’t trying to be rude, I was genuinely concerned because I’ve mentioned permanent hair removal for my family to save on shaving cream and razors (I’m the dad and have 2 girls and a wife) so they sent me a link to one of those ipl things. Being the laser nut that I am, I seen the flash from it on your video and on camera it looks exactly like an ir laser flash which can burn your retinas off without you even knowing it. But thanks to your reply and further research I see that it’s safe so thank you again, and I’m sorry if it seemed like I was trying to be rude, that was never the intention

should you shave BEFORE using the device or there should be hair on the skin for the device to detect it??? I've read different forms of use. Why should we pre-shave before using it, though??? what's the point?
I believe it is so the device rests as close to the hair follicle as possible to allow for better efficiency
Yes, you shave just before using the device. There’s a full explanation of why here www.philips.co.uk/c-f/XC000003463/why-do-i-need-to-remove-hair-before-a-lumea-treatment
still liking this? was curious if you had updates on your progress:) thanks 😊
Hi Katy. I filmed this update back in May which you might find helpful. Overall I’m very happy with the device and use it once a month to maintain results th-cam.com/video/cQ0ATOLZ67A/w-d-xo.html
@@thehonestchannel ty will definitely watch! did you notice anything with it also helping with age spots? trying to make a decision on the product as we go into fall
@@katybrooke0724 Hi.I don’t have age spots on my legs so I’ve not noticed any additional benefit like that I’m afraid.
I tried it once and my hair grew back after 3 days
You have to keep using it over a period of weeks to work
@@thehonestchannel ohh so i have to use it daily over a period of weeks or how ? Please help and dont tell me i spend money unnecessary 😅
@@thehonestchannel awesome thank u! 😊
I live in USA can u tell I can buy it from where?
Hello, do you think its ok to use it for baby hair on face?
It will only work on darker hair I’m afraid, not blonde.
Can I expose my skin to the sun after using it? I have heard that it can leave dark spots or it can be harmful for the skin.
Hi. I haven't seen any evidence of that. I've also not had any issues with skin sensitivity having used it fortnightly for over two months now. That said, it's recommended we wear sunscreen before exposing our skin to the sun anyway so you could do that to guard against harmful effects.
Hi Clare - Any update on how you got on using it underarm ?
Hi Gemma. It was highly effective on my under arm hair. It works very well on darker, thicker hair - it's those finer lighter ones that are tougher to get rid of.
hello, is it okay to use this device in summer? (while going to the beach, getting tanned etc.)
It doesn’t destroy the follicle so hair growth will slow and thin but it’s not fully permanent, I have found laser works more permanently.
I’m about to do second course of treatment now lol i get more exciting each time i look at the reviews 😂
Keep us posted!
Update please
Hello
Is it effective for facial hair because of pcos? As just a huge reduction in hair growth after laser treatment but now I'm again facing facial hair growth and for every month itx not possible to go for laser...
Hi. It's effective on darker hair on any part of the body.
What would u recommend shaving of waxing the hair before using ipl machine?
Shaving is probably easiest and you can use the device straight afterwards. If you wax then you need to wait 24 hours before IPL because it requires some hair growth in the follicle in order to work.
Hi Do you mean it doesn’t work with dark armpit with dark hair?
Hi. If you check the skin tone guide in the description that should help you decide whether this is right for you. It works best on darker hair and lighter skin tones.
@@thehonestchannel thanks
Did you notice any difference with brown patches on your skin if it targets pigment ???
Hi. It doesn’t cause skin pigmentation - I’ve had no issues at all to date.
@@thehonestchannel thank you!
@@astrideuridice You’re welcome : )
How do you make sure you cover each area while not going through the same area twice?
I do a half leg at a time, running it in strips and working my way round. I will inevitably go over some bits twice and likely miss others but it’s not a big issue. You can get the bits you missed (and therefore has hairs growing back) next time : )
Did u use it on the bickini zone aswell ? If yes how are the results .. if not then why not ?
Hi Tamara. Yes, it's fine to use this on the bikini area (but not genitals) and you should get a similar result to the rest of the body :)
Which cream or moisturizer can be use after treatment.
Just your usual moisturiser is fine. Unless you have very sensitive skin there shouldn’t be any irritation at all after use.
@@thehonestchannel thank you so much for quick answer.
Today I used 1st time as a patch test after watching your video. It's results looks better. Your videos are very informative. Thank you once again and God bless you 💕🌹😘
@@ne6438 You’re most welcome - and thank you for your kind words 🙏
Hi
How many lasers does it have?
Hi. IPL uses light (intense pulsed light) rather than laser. It works by heating up the pigment in your hair and the root, sending the follicle into a resting phase.
Is it good for ungrown hair? And sensitive skin?
Yes, in the early stages review I talk about testing the device on a small area of skin to check for sensitivity. I had no problems and no ingrowns : )
Can you use it on your forhead area? I mean the large device and not the small pen
Yes, you can use it for facial hair : )
Is it a a permanent hair removal method or semi permanent
I don’t think hair will ever grow back as thick again after using it frequently, but it’s semi-permanent as you need to keep using the device around once a month longer term. Some people feel they don’t have to do that. It varies. I use it once a month on my legs to maintain results
@@thehonestchannel Thank you
Hi
Do you think it would work on men’s back hair ?
Funnily enough, I’ve used it twice on my husband’s back hair and it is making a difference.
But it's not working effectively on me results are very slow I'm worried about it.
Sorry to hear that. How many times have you used it? Did you shave beforehand? It’s also worth making sure you use it on a setting of 3 or more
My Philips IPL Lumea Advanced just died after 3 years of use :( I heard "boom" two times and the light doesn't come out anymore, even though it turns on and the fan works.
I bought it in Europe for 150 Euros so I'm still satisfied with the lifetime but I wouldn't buy for the crazy high US price!
Does anybody have experience with any cheaper IPLs, like in the $150-200 range?
They’re on Amazon for about $80
I have pale skin and blonde hair but my leg and armpit hair is dark brown will this work on me?
It should work well on darker hair, yes. I have virtually no underarm hair now.
Hello darling, i have a question, what if I do a session every week? To get rid of the hair quickly, is it dangerous or does it work?
Hi. The two-week treatment recommendation is based on the hair regrowth cycle, but it's not dangerous to do a weekly session, it just may be more efficient to let remaining hair grow back in then shave and do a treatment (if that makes sense).
6 months later and I’m still patchy. Don’t buy, go to a beauty salon and spend the cash to get hair permanently gone.
Considering the cost of this compared to a salon/clinic, I thought it represented good value for money.
Can it work dark skin brown or black skin tones??
Hi. I don’t think a self-tan will be a problem, though I would do the treatment on clean skin (pre creams and moisturisers).
@@thehonestchannel Thankyou 🥰x
What process should we do after doing IPL session like there is a mentioned routine of shaved/clean/dry skin before the session
After doing IPL I just moisturise my legs (though not a requirement) and get on with the day : )
@@thehonestchannel thank you
How many times did you use it per month?
The Honest Channel I really hope so thank you very much and sorry for the mistakes because English is not my first language I’m doing my best
@@mimizmn8080 Your English is great 😊
Can you use it on your full body ?
Yes, it’s fine for facial hair, under arms, bikini, legs - anywhere apart from genitals.
@@thehonestchannel Thank you
Can we do a full boday session in one day ??? Or we have to decide separate day for each boday part?
Yes you can. The device stops working when it overheats and you need to switch it off for a few mins, but you can keep going after it has cooled.
At start i should be taking sessions after every 2 weeks right?
@@summanimtiaz900 That’s right.
Hi, due to harmonal imbalance and pcod i have dark hair on my face below chin will it really work for me ma'am bcoz I need to shave daily twice I seriously feel bad to go out with this problem can u please help me out😔
Do gou shave inbetween 2 session?
Yes, you should shave before each session
I have many different IPL brands but they don’t really give me the results that I need.
Sorry to hear that.
What happens if I used it for the exact same area two or more times by mistake? does it burn?
That would depend on the sensitivity of your skin but I have used mine regularly on setting 3 and gone over areas at least twice in the same sessions with no problems.
@@thehonestchannel thank you❤️
Please I need a response does any brand of ipl hair removal devices give the same result because in my country I can't get a certain brand my options are limited
I’ve only used this one and have shared my results in this review for others to judge whether it’s right for them. My experience is it works on darker hair but it’s worth checking the skin tone guide www.philips.co.uk/c-f/XC000003324/is-philips-lumea-suitable-for-all-skin-and-hair-types
does it work on the bikini line?
Yes, it's most effective on dark hair, including the bikini line.
Hi this model has no off button. I don’t know how to turn it off. If I press the button it just moves to the heat setting
Mine is a plug-in so if all else fails could be switched off at the plug - but if it’s the same model try holding the power button down for a few seconds to switch off.
Yes I have got the same model. X
I have another question I have dry shaved my legs which has caused rashes should I wait now to use IPL ? Many thanks for the response.
@@mylittleworld2552 Holding down the on button should work then : )
Doctors in clinics say that it's not effective such as laser sessions in clinics
They say it's only effective for maintenance (after having 6-8 sessions at clinics) but not effective alone
What do you think ?
At home devices will be less powerful than those in clinics, but they are way less expensive and I’m pleased with the result. I have a friend who got IPL on her armpits in a clinic and has never had to shave them since. The hair has completely stopped growing. With the Lumea the hair on my arm pits has thinned hugely and grows very sparsely - but I suspect that’s the difference. There is still some hair there. I’m going to useful it for a full year though and report back on the long-term results. Long answer! Hope that helps
@@thehonestchannel yeah thank you sooo much dear
is this good for Brazilian bikini or areolas/nipples? I weirdly have few hairs there and just an embarrassment to have it done in a salon (legs and armpits already covered by a laser professionally! woo hoo). thank you :)
I recently published a comparison between this IPL device and a laser one. I found the laser - which has a small head - better for treating smaller areas but you can use either very close to but not directly on genitals and nipples.
@@thehonestchannel thanks for the speedy and helpful response :)
Is it chargeable?
No, it runs from the mains/plug rather than a battery.
It is working on face area really , i have 4 years of laser therapy for face and 1 session of electrolysis , we can use her in this case ?
It works well on any area of the body for darker hair. It shouldn’t make any difference whether you have had previous hair removal treatments: )
is it painful?
No, not at all. If you have it on the highest setting it can feel like a little ping on sensitive skin but you can turn it down.
I would like to know if for the second use I must to shave or it’s just for the first time?
The instructions recommend you shave before you use every time.
