I had the same problem yesterday morning in the rain .I have a 2015 Sedona sxl I was there for awhile trying to lock the trunk. Luckily I was at work so I just walk away at the end of my work day when I came back it was closed. Thanks for this video now I can show the dealership this for reference.
I have a 2014 Kia Sorento SXL that had this liftgate issue. My fix: the liftgate could not open completely because it was stuck to the rubber door surrounding that stops the elements from coming in. I gave the rubber surrounding and the liftgate jam and good cleaning with HOT soapy water and a microfiber cloth, dried it with another microfiber cloth and my liftgate was as good as new. Hope that helps and good luck!
Had my back latch replaced in a 2016 Sorrento. Body shop found a small piece of white plastic that had broke off and caused latch failure. My Sorrento does not have a power assist trunk latch, just the standard one. The piece broke at the time I used the wireless key to unlock the car with a double click I heard the piece snap.
Took it in immediately to the dealer and it was a recall issue and it was fixed free of charge. They will also be fixing 2 other things that were recall issues. Not biggies but it was the headrest and the visor light. FYI - mine is a 2016. Thanks for the feedback!!
I don't see anything about the tailgate listed on the NHTSA recall list. I've been having this same problem periodically over the last year or more but it recently became more frequent.
Same problem with 2015 Sorento, replaced already the tail gate latch, still the problem persists it won't open. Always you have to crawl at the back and to push the lock and someone to pull the gate outside to have it open.
Having the same problem with my 2018 Kia Sorento. It works intermittently. I took it to the dealer because it was still under warranty but it was working when the technician looked at it and he said he couldn't find anything wrong.
I have had trunk issues with my 2016 Kia Sorento since I got it. At one point they replaced the latch and we thought it was fixed only for it to continue to have problems. Now it is doing this. I think it may be a Kia issue. Makes me not want to buy another Kia!
I have a 2020 Kia and had the same issue . after watching this video, i tried it and it worked. So, it seems that when you push down where the latch is and hear a click, then try to open it , it will open. weird, but if it works, that is good. I will mention it to the Kia dealer when I take it in for it's next service .
My rear hatch door on my 2015 Sedona starts to open but then only goes up 1/4 of the way. I have to force it up to open. Dealership says I need to spend $2000 on the parts to repair. Can you help?
I just had this problem too.. 2016 Kia Sorento. Took it to my auto repair guy and they told me it was the actuator and lift mechanism. $490 for the part.. Is this a recall part because I would like to get my money back if it is??
Thanks for the video and I know it’s a long time since you posted but still very helpful as we bought a Kia picanto and about a week later the rear hatch door switch is failing intermittently as well so it’s very difficult to locate the problem 😢 Hopefully you have resolved the problem or sold it!!
We need a class action lawsuit on kia over all their cars having latch problems. 2018 kia rio latch problem as well, started with not popping open, and when it finally did pop open by itself after trying it to see if it would, now the trunk won't close. Dealership seems reluctant to replace for free, I will try to go there to see if they will replace it, my car is less than 2 years old, and less than 25,000 miles.
2016 Kia Sorento. I took mine in to the Dealer it was on a recall. Never had any problems with the original one now this has happened and I'm calling the Dealer first thing in the morning!
We had same problem, while driving door closed, now latch is working but gate wont open. Took to Kia they are replacing two arms. They need to order parts. Idk if this is going to fix it
Did you guys ever get this fixed? I'm having the same issue with my Ford Explorer and it's doing the same exact thing. Would love to know if they fixed it for you. Thanks!
Once we showed the dealership the video above they realized it was a latch problem and replaced it free of charge (we actually just had it fixed yesterday).
Clean the rubber surrounding inner door jamb with HOT soapy water. Use rubber gloves to protect your hands from the temperature of the hot water. Make sure to get anything sticky out of there. Dry with another microfiber cloth. If still a little sticky, repeat and dry again.
My kia sorento 2010 model is the same problem is always open not lock.....why this door is damage....kia do you have anay option....if you do this fix for manuly...
I’m currently having this issue with my 14 Kia Optima Hybrid😭 I can’t drop the seats down and the button inside and on the key fob still doesn’t get it to open. Just makes that same clicking/unlocking noise. I have tried pushing down/ applying pressure to the trunk, but no luck🥺
I have a 15 Sorento and every time I take whit the dealer when still have warranty they say o we don't find nothing wrong now w/out warranty the door is don't even open that sucks so let me know if is a law suit the goin arrow about that please
I am having the same problem with my 2015 kia Sedona sxl model. Always in the rain or snow bring it in for service and they're telling me nothing is wrong.
2016 Kia Sorento. This exact thing just happened to me...of course as i was trying to park and get my son in to the er for an asthma attack 😩 I finally just pushed really hard and got it to shut thinking it would correct itself. But now it hasn’t been able to open since
I have a 2015 Kia Sorento and I'm having the same problem. It started out that I couldn't close the tailgate except manually, but now it won't open or close. I checked the fuse, but that's not the problem. I sure can't be crawling in the back to open it with the emergency latch. So frustrating.
My 2016 (no power lift) is doing this now. Only way I can open it is if I crawl through the back seats and use the manual emergency latch lift from inside. :/
Try to focus on the spot below plates right by bumper where latch is and press in hard and fast a few times and watch for the light inside car on ceiling to go off. We showed another video we took to Kia and they said,,"Oh ya that looks like you have a malfunctioning latch motor." And are now going to replace it. I'll see if I can find the case number for our case so you can give it to your Kia person to show you are not the only one.
I have a no power lift gate 2015 Kia Sorento and my latch broke yesterday while on my way home from a camping trip. Thank God it was after the trip. Can you tell me if there was a recall afterall? I don't recall getting a notice but I am bad at keeping track especially when Kia has been hounding me lately now that my lease is up in a couple of months.
dreka brinson my 2016 Sorento first got where it would not open. Then when I opened it using the emergency latch inside, it would not close. I took it to two different mechanics before the second was told by Kia that they are recalled. However, Kia’s site doesn’t list it with recalls. I am told to take it to the specific dealer that says it’s covered, to guarantee they’ll pay. It’s 1.5 hours from home but I guess it’s better than being stuck with bill since the local Kia dealer says there are NO recalls on my vehicle. ( Which is total BS, as their site shows at least three).
The solution, until you get it fixed, is to focus on getting the door to close all the way first instead of trying to get it open. We found the best way to do that is focus all of your energy right below the license plate, down by where the latch is inside, and push in hard short shoves until you hear a click. Then you should be able to open the door by pushing the button. This worked for us but may not work for everyone. Once we showed the dealership the video above they realized it was a latch problem and replaced it free of charge (we actually just had it fixed yesterday). If your dealership wants to know the details of how they claim the problem to kia so kia will pay for the repair tell them the kia dealership in Eugene, Oregon did a replacement on 12/13/16 for the same issue. I hope that helps!
I've been having the same issue with my 2016 Kia Sorento SX for at least a year randomly. However, recently it's occurring much more frequently, as it the majority of times I try to open the trunk it won't open. I'm taking the car in for a service soon, since it's still under lease I'm hoping they will repair it no charge. Per your advice, I'm going to try to get a video of it happening to show them because of course it will function perfectly at the dealership. haha.
I had the same problem with my Sorento . I had to take it to the dealership to get it repaired. Kia never send me any kind of notice saying there was a recall .
Ahmad Alhaidery I took my 2016 Kia in about a year ago for this had to replace the latch now it's doing it again after about another year did they tell you there was a recall?

I have a 2012 Sorento but I don't have a power lift gate and mine keeps showing that my lift gate is open. It is now messing with my security system. When I lock my truck my alarm goes off randomly because my lift gate pops open by itself. I've cleaned it out, regreased it, everything I can think of and nothing has helped. It's really annoying when the lights come on when I am driving down the road especially at night. What did Kia tell you needed to be changed? Please respond via email happygrirl@hotmail.com YES.....2 R's happygRiRl!!!!
We just encountered the same issue on our 2016 Sorento. Appreciate the video! If we get any updates on remedies i'll respond on this forum! Thank you!
I have the same problem on my 2016 Sorento! Kia needs to open their eyes and fix it!

Thank you! We found it just needed oil, we put some CRC spray silicon in the mechanism and now it fine.
Spray on the 2 bars/poles on either side? Sorry not sure how to explain 😅

Do you happen to know that recall number?
I’m having the same problem with my 2016 Kia Sorento. I just bought it in November 2018. Do you have the recall number?
I don't see anything about the tailgate listed on the NHTSA recall list. I've been having this same problem periodically over the last year or more but it recently became more frequent.
I just encounter the same problem with my 2014 kia sorento thanks for the information
I have this problem too and your video really helped.thank you for making this video..
Kia they need you up their game, their cars is very expensive, but it has many problems...I also have same problem 2019 model..
Same problem with 2015 Sorento, replaced already the tail gate latch, still the problem persists it won't open. Always you have to crawl at the back and to push the lock and someone to pull the gate outside to have it open.
We have a 2012 Kia Sportage and if it’s hot out the rear latch won’t open. I replaced the latch actuator and it didn’t solve the problem…ugh!
Thank you for posting this, it helped me with the same problem
Friend with a '16 has this problem and that's how I found your video

so much no needed techs on car today, always broke, kinda feel nostalgic about old time where cars had just basic techs...
Did anyone figure it out

Finally is the problem solved?
My 2017 Sorento just did the same thing
I kicked it where the latch is and it opened but would not open once I shut it again
2010 Kia Sedona having the same issues. Can't shut because it's stuck in the locked position.
Thank you for this video. It helped me with my latch dilemma ❤️
This is happening to my 2016 Sorento. The idiot trying to call you an idiot is the real idiot. I'm taking it to the dealer next week.
My 08 Sportage sometimes won't latch closed. If I fiddle with it it will though. It's a manual door. Thankful that the window opens.
Did you guys ever get this fixed? I'm having the same issue with my Ford Explorer and it's doing the same exact thing. Would love to know if they fixed it for you. Thanks!

Update: Did how you did and pushed down on my trunk towards the latch, it came open but now won’t close 🙇🏾♀️latch I believe if officially broken
I have a 15 Sorento and every time I take whit the dealer when still have warranty they say o we don't find nothing wrong now w/out warranty the door is don't even open that sucks so let me know if is a law suit the goin arrow about that please
Any update? Mine is 2015 and having a problem as of yesterday
2020 Kia Carnival (Sedona) same problem occurring every week.
worked for our 2014 kia sorento.
Solution: placed 2 1/5 MM flat washers under tail gate latch to raise it up and the latching mechanism no longer gets hung up when trying to open....!
I am having the same problem with my 2015 kia Sedona sxl model. Always in the rain or snow bring it in for service and they're telling me nothing is wrong.

My Kia Sorento 2017 is having the same problem the latch is broken , I have this car only 3 days with me , I am thinking to get a KIA was a bad idea.
Did you fix it?
I'm having the same issue with my 2014!
Just had this problem this morning with a double bass stuck inside which we had to do gymnastics to get out. Also a Kia Sorrento.

Push down on the door near the latch
