2015 Kia Sorento Back Hatch Latch Problem. Lift Gate. Stuck. Won't Shut. Won't Open. Defective Latch
Our 2015 Kia Sorento back hatch problem. A few times a week we have this issue with our back hatch. Kia said they can fix it unless they can replicate the problem in their shop. Since it doesn't happen all the time it is impossible to predict and make an appointment with Kia to see the problem. I've already spent half a day waiting in their service department only to be told they can't make the door not work at that time therefore they won't replace anything. We've explained it is obvious the latch is defective only to be told, "If we replace the latch and the problem happens again you won't be very happy will you."
So their plan was to do absolutely nothing unless corporate tells them other people have had the same problem and what part of the mechanism they should fix. I was finally able to capture the problem very clearly in this video and hope to show this to Kia and get our latch replaced. I thought I would post the video in the event other people out there are having the same issue.
FYI my daughter and I discovered that if you push really hard right down by where the latch is we can usually get it to click and shut the door completely. However as you can see in video it still happens again the next time you open it. We don't know what triggers it to happen other than most times it's pretty hot outside. But I've also had it happen in the cold and most annoyingly in the pouring rain!! And since you can't drive until it's shut it makes for a great show to see a woman standing in the pouring rain of a parking lot pushing on the back of her car for 15 minutes for what looks like no reason. (This was before we discovered to push directly above latch so I'm hoping next time that works as well as it did in the video)
Anyway if you are a Kia owner who has had this same problem please let us know.

Solution: placed 2 1/5 MM flat washers under tail gate latch to raise it up and the latching mechanism no longer gets hung up when trying to open....!
My rear hatch door on my 2015 Sedona starts to open but then only goes up 1/4 of the way. I have to force it up to open. Dealership says I need to spend $2000 on the parts to repair. Can you help?
Same problem with 2015 Sorento, replaced already the tail gate latch, still the problem persists it won't open. Always you have to crawl at the back and to push the lock and someone to pull the gate outside to have it open.
Thank you! We found it just needed oil, we put some CRC spray silicon in the mechanism and now it fine.
Spray on the 2 bars/poles on either side? Sorry not sure how to explain 😅

We have a 2012 Kia Sportage and if it’s hot out the rear latch won’t open. I replaced the latch actuator and it didn’t solve the problem…ugh!
so much no needed techs on car today, always broke, kinda feel nostalgic about old time where cars had just basic techs...

Having the same problem with my 2018 Kia Sorento. It works intermittently. I took it to the dealer because it was still under warranty but it was working when the technician looked at it and he said he couldn't find anything wrong.

I’m currently having this issue with my 14 Kia Optima Hybrid😭 I can’t drop the seats down and the button inside and on the key fob still doesn’t get it to open. Just makes that same clicking/unlocking noise. I have tried pushing down/ applying pressure to the trunk, but no luck🥺
Update: Did how you did and pushed down on my trunk towards the latch, it came open but now won’t close 🙇🏾♀️latch I believe if officially broken
worked for our 2014 kia sorento.
My 08 Sportage sometimes won't latch closed. If I fiddle with it it will though. It's a manual door. Thankful that the window opens.
2020 Kia Carnival (Sedona) same problem occurring every week.
We had same problem, while driving door closed, now latch is working but gate wont open. Took to Kia they are replacing two arms. They need to order parts. Idk if this is going to fix it

I have a 2020 Kia and had the same issue . after watching this video, i tried it and it worked. So, it seems that when you push down where the latch is and hear a click, then try to open it , it will open. weird, but if it works, that is good. I will mention it to the Kia dealer when I take it in for it's next service .
I just had this problem too.. 2016 Kia Sorento. Took it to my auto repair guy and they told me it was the actuator and lift mechanism. $490 for the part.. Is this a recall part because I would like to get my money back if it is??

2012 Kia Sedona with same problem especially in hot weather.
I have had trunk issues with my 2016 Kia Sorento since I got it. At one point they replaced the latch and we thought it was fixed only for it to continue to have problems. Now it is doing this. I think it may be a Kia issue. Makes me not want to buy another Kia!
We need a class action lawsuit on kia over all their cars having latch problems. 2018 kia rio latch problem as well, started with not popping open, and when it finally did pop open by itself after trying it to see if it would, now the trunk won't close. Dealership seems reluctant to replace for free, I will try to go there to see if they will replace it, my car is less than 2 years old, and less than 25,000 miles.

My kia sorento 2010 model is the same problem is always open not lock.....why this door is damage....kia do you have anay option....if you do this fix for manuly...

2016 Kia Sorento. I took mine in to the Dealer it was on a recall. Never had any problems with the original one now this has happened and I'm calling the Dealer first thing in the morning!
Thanks for the video and I know it’s a long time since you posted but still very helpful as we bought a Kia picanto and about a week later the rear hatch door switch is failing intermittently as well so it’s very difficult to locate the problem 😢 Hopefully you have resolved the problem or sold it!!
I have a 2014 Kia Sorento SXL that had this liftgate issue. My fix: the liftgate could not open completely because it was stuck to the rubber door surrounding that stops the elements from coming in. I gave the rubber surrounding and the liftgate jam and good cleaning with HOT soapy water and a microfiber cloth, dried it with another microfiber cloth and my liftgate was as good as new. Hope that helps and good luck!

2016 Kia Sorento. This exact thing just happened to me...of course as i was trying to park and get my son in to the er for an asthma attack 😩 I finally just pushed really hard and got it to shut thinking it would correct itself. But now it hasn’t been able to open since
I have a 2015 Kia Sorento and I'm having the same problem. It started out that I couldn't close the tailgate except manually, but now it won't open or close. I checked the fuse, but that's not the problem. I sure can't be crawling in the back to open it with the emergency latch. So frustrating.

I've been having the same issue with my 2016 Kia Sorento SX for at least a year randomly. However, recently it's occurring much more frequently, as it the majority of times I try to open the trunk it won't open. I'm taking the car in for a service soon, since it's still under lease I'm hoping they will repair it no charge. Per your advice, I'm going to try to get a video of it happening to show them because of course it will function perfectly at the dealership. haha.
