DORA GOT REALLY SICK ~ Dealing with a horse with colic

- Well that is a week I never want to repeat! Certainly the most scared I have been about one of the ponies in a very long time, thank goodness she seems to be recovering now.
I hope this video clears things up for everyone about what has been going on with Dora. Colic can be seriously scary and show in many different ways, hopefully this will remind us all to keep a very close eye on our ponies.

Almost lost my boy to colic 2 years ago. It’s the most terrifying thing to experience i am so glad that she is all good. I hope that she makes a full recovery and becomes stronger than ever ❤️

My pony had an impact colic. So really feeling this episode. Luckily my vet was so local that transporting him wasn't needed. Even more luckily, he didn't need surgery. But I have to watch him for symptoms for the rest of his life. So finding this a bit triggering.

Meg, just know that none of this was your fault! It could have happened to anyone, and you did everything that you could to prevent it, it was just bad luck 💗💗

Wishing Dora a full and speedy recovery, she’s such a fighter. This was a really helpful vlog and I liked the clip Rowan did as I’m applying to do vet med next yr and all my clinical experience has been cancelled so it was really helpful ❤️
One time when i was at the barn, after my lesson my trainer asked me to turn out an older horse, i ended up having to wait bc there was a girl in the pen we were gonna turn him out in. I went to go get him again and he was laying down, i tried to get him up but he couldn’t get up and I honestly got scared he was collicing. Luckly, he just has arthritis in his knee so he couldn’t get up on the side he was on. My trainer taught me and showed me that he was alert so he wasnt colicing. Im glad i learned how to look for it. Glad baby dora is doin ok!

Sat here bawling my eyes out, couple years ago at the yard I worked at there was a horse who got colic. I was the only person who had transport so left my other job to come drive the horse to the vets, the exact same vets Dora went to. Sadly he didn't make it through the surgery. Even though he wasn't my horse, seeing that place again and hearing of your scare has brought all those feelings back. Colic is such a horrid thing. So glad Dora is ok!

A barn in a neighboring town's horses was poisoned and it was a rough go. I'm not sure of the full story, but I know they lost a few and the horses were sick for months. I'm so glad Dora was okay, I know that is tough to go through but you're so strong, I'm not sure I could have handled it that well. Sending love and prayers toward y'all!
I just remembered another story that I was told at a ranch in Arizona - one of their horses was clicking, near death, and they are hours away from anything, so they called the vet but the vet couldn't get there in time. So they loaded the horse on a trailer, and drove it around on the bumpiest roads, hoping that this old method would loosen everything and save the horse, which it did! This has stuck with me for my life, and how I never want to be in a situation like that.
Oh my god, so glad she's better. My favourite part was defiently seeing Bear and Jam coming up the field to greet Dora. That shows how much they actually care for each other. It looked like a heartwarming scene from an equine movie! ❤
Wow, this was super educational. I have never really known much about colic and now I am going to be way more cautious and keep my ponies in the future safe🥰 very happy she’s recovering❤️

So glad Dora is okay! Hope the rest of her recovery goes smoothly. Colic is SO scary. It definitely pays to know the signs if you do anything with horses; At boarding/livery stables I have saved other people’s horses at least twice noticing they were lying down and not eating. Years ago with my own mare, repeated colics turned out to be caused by painful ovulations that required spaying her, so knowing the signs can help diagnose bigger issues too. Thank goodness for good vets!

I very much appreciate the updates because it annoys me when people say my horse has this then nothing else su I am very glad and thankful of updates because even though they are your ponies we are very much invested and love them all just as much as you and care when they are hurt or poorly but I am glad she is home safe and sound looking forward to watching her getting stronger day by day so thank you to you and Hobbit

Honestly thank you so much for filming during when she wasn’t well and then an update afterwards. It’s easy to forget that these awful things happen to other horses, as social media often always only post the positives and the nicer side of equestrianism. Or, people would just show the recovery side. I get that, because there’s enough shit going on in the world, but this real, down to earth footage followed by the outcome - is really appreciated. I wish Dora and all the other ponies all the health in the world💛
So glad to hear she’s home and okay! Horses do know how to put us through an emotional rollercoaster ride don’t they! So cute when the girls were running to the gate to see her when she arrived home 🥰
What a nightmare! But I'm just thrilled that beautiful, sweet Dora is feeling herself again. And thanks so much for sharing the experience; a generous gesture that will help me and many people know what to do in the event of something like this (but hope I never have to use this knowledge).

Colic is horrible 😢 my girl had 360 torsion of the colon last August. She was operated on and has had a good recovery.

I'm so sorry to hear about Dora, it's always so upsetting when the ones you love are suffering and you powerless to help😞. Thankfully the Vet were able to work their magic and all has worked out well😊. Dora is home and back with her friends and family. This was such an emotional video to watch for me and was practically crying when you brought her home❤ In October I lost my old boy to colic and unfortunately we couldn't even get him to the hospital, I have been heart broken ever since. Unlike you I never got that special moment of bringing him home or even getting him to the vets, always questioning what I did wrong and what could I have done better. Cherish the lovely Dora, you're so lucky to have her back with you! I understand completely the pain you must have been feeling waiting for the vets verdict in the car! Such a lovely video and after everything you have been through this week you still thought of making an informative video for your followers if they end up in the same predicament❤

Oh my gosh I had the exact same experience with my horse colicing extremely badly around august last year. After a day and a half of tests and scans and her not getting better at all our vet told us we had to take her into hospital after seeing inflammation in her blood tests. Possibly the scariest and most stressful days of my life rushing her into hospital and waiting for them to figure out what was wrong and we were really unsure if she was going to make it or not. Basically they found out that she was completely riddled with worms causing her gut to stop functioning and causing the colic so she has to go onto a drip and stay at hospital for 10 days.
Really can’t stress enough how much she had changed in the time she was ill her whole personality dropped and it was so clear she was extremely unhappy, thankfully our vets were absolutely amazing monitoring her 24/7 and she came home all safe and sound and is now doing better than ever. Really colic is so scary and that time was the most stressful time ever for me and my mom but now I am so thankful that she got out of it and she’s all okay 💕💕 hug your ponies daily because you never know how quickly things can change over for the worst
Im so happy for you!!!! luckily I have only experienced small colic systems, as in my horse would lie down, not poop and look kinda poorly, but with a lot of walking around and the on-call vet on the phone, he got better after 1.5 hours of walking. And the scariest thing is to go inside after such a nightmare, because you just don't want to leave them. Thats what I hate most about boarding my horses, the fact that im 20 min away if something happens.

So glad Dora ok. What an awful shock for you & Hobbit. Your vets are wonderful. Only seen colic in a horse once - it was horrendous. Bless you guys & precious Dora. Your prompt actions saved her as well as the vets. Love & best wishes to all (two-legged & four).

OMG so sorry you had to go through the stress of Colic it's terrifying and Dora's such a sweetheart. I glad everything is ok now. Loved the greeting party that is Bear and Jam. The look on her paddock mate faces when she walked in the stable was priceless all so happy to see her.

I’m so happy and glad that she’s all okay, it’s such a horrible thing to go through you feel so helpless. I lost one of mine back in March to a twisted gut it’s awful, I wish no one would have to go through it. So glad she’s happy and healthy again❤️

So glad to hear she’s made a very speedy recovery! My pony got colic, then had an severe allergic reaction and almost died and then got laminitis from the antihistamines they gave him! He’s been off since Mia November and is only just slowly recovering! I’m also very thankful for the vets as he is prone to laminitis so has been saved multiple times by them! I think all vets deserve medals for their hard work!

I’m with 3 counties equine hospital too, they’re only a 5 minute drive from me in Twyning. When my mare has had any issues they’re always so fast to respond and get a vet out and get everything sorted. They’re so so lovely, so glad it ended well!

You and Hobbit are certainly not the only ones who shed a tear over Dora's absence. I definitely cried a bit watching this. I hope the costs aren't crushing, I know they can be. Our community is such that we'd help you out if you needed it.

thank you for filming! sadly our 30 year old icelandic recently passed away (most likely because of colic) theres usually a saying that when an older horse goes down, no matter how much you do to try and get then up they're never going to stay that way, and that was really the case. He passed peacefully and is now having a wonderful time in horsey heaven, I'm sure of it
