    Great video of troubleshooting. Not only replacing a power supply but tracing the root cause of the problem (earth fault).
    Very essential in ballasting/deballasting and bunkering operation. Good Job lecky. Salute

    Previously I have located shorts using a TDR because it can give you a "distance to fault" and if you move to a different probe point you'll either be closer or further, although with lots of open circuits in this way, it might be harder than when I do it with data lines. Another electronics technique from circuit diagnosis is to use a micro-Ohms meter so you can see the very small differences in resistance as you get closer to the fault. Both these are more expensive/complex than simply disconnecting each node and checking it, but time is money in some cases.

    . Breakers and fuses are mainly there to protect the wiring from burning up, but I would install a fast blow, it sometimes protects dc power supplys. The 3amp uc1 cello lite fuse you have shown is a time delay fuse. Slow blow fuses will fry power supplys for sure.

    Curious on when to use a ground on a vessel? My main job is a diesel mechanic. When I watch electricians, I've heard them say things like never to use a ground, or the hull is a ground. Should a ground on a circuit be set up like a residential electrical?

  • @trcostan

    70k ohm seems like a high resistance to cause damage to a 2 amp power supply! But I suppose it could be a non linear thing like water in a connection

    • @kurtronaldesteban8190
      @kurtronaldesteban8190 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In the last part, when he is measuring one by one the white wires (going to the limit switches of the valves). He measured line to earth resistance and from there he was able to see which particular valve was causing the earth fault.

    good job.but even reading 70 k ohm is not too much earthing .by equation I=24 v/70000 ohm=3 mA .so I think that's not the main reason for burned power supply

    • @Nerd3927
      @Nerd3927 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It is an indication that something is not right. And the fluke only measures at a few volts. At 24V the resistance can be a lot lower.

  • @andyfannan8298
    @andyfannan8298 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good video. How did you earth chase at the start of the video? Did you put the neg and pos probes across the fuse and it should read OL but read 70k ohms indicating earth?

    • @cck1496
      @cck1496 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Is it important to remove the fuse for checking the ground fault?
      Thanks.

    • @JohnvetMarcellana
      @JohnvetMarcellana 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The line is line-to-neutral and if you test for resistance between the two you should not get resistance and it means not shorted. The negative or neutral is bound to grounding, so he focus on hot line side which he found out shorted or connected to ground or having earth fault. He test all others(connected to line side) line to ground to determine which is connected to ground/shorted. That's all I understand.

    • @JohnvetMarcellana
      @JohnvetMarcellana 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cck1496 I think it's for safety and at the same time reducing the work itself. Imagine the line below the fuse is good(no line to ground fault), you will just focus on upper side of the fuse, and it's just a wire so it's easier troubleshooting

      @andyfannan8298 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm a refrigeration service technician, specializing in light commercial however I have experience in supermarket refrigeration as well. I have an AA in refrigeration mechanics but I am wondering how much more education and training I would need to work as a marine electrician like yourself?

    • @stillthakoolest

      First you need to train as a merchant mariner. School is the easiest way to start.

      You can work on passenger ships as an HVAC technician.
      You need to speak to a crewing agency near you, write down their suggestions.
      Inform yourself what it means to work on sea. Maybe the lifestyle is not suitable for you or maybe your health does not allow it.
      Look at an job opening for a hvac technician on passenger ships to have a feeling for the requirements.
      You can also work as an reefer technician on container ship, also check job description.

    Need help here. How can the Power Supply be burned or shorted when the fuse was intact to begin with? Shouldn’t the fuse be burned down first and save the power supply?
