Sam is the brain, so she gets affected by plans that affect the brain. Alex is the body, so her body is the thing that gets affected. Clover is the personality/ charisma, so she is affected in ways that she believes will affect her social abilities. In this way, the episodes become the spies overcoming the effect on their teamwork. Alex is a bit clumsier for sure, but it's an interesting foil to how she's extremely athletic in her normal life. Just the same as how Sam is the smartest one yet also the most susceptible to mind control/hypnosis. @@estebangutierrez160 i definitely read that somewhere? Some years ago that the show was inspired by Charlies Angels. Jerry is if Charlie was James Bond sort of thing. Can't say whether it was a trusted source or not but I believed it😂
I really hated how they changed their mom’s designs. They used to be original in season 2 and then became just older versions of the girls… Also Alex’s dad in season 6 is a completely different man…
Winx, totally spies, W.i.t.c.h, card captor sakura The children will never understand what it’s like to grow up with iconic female characters on screen
Sam’s character is very much under the Daphne Blake effect: pretty red head with a solid head on her shoulders, is the better capture either cuz nefarious reason for enjoyment or to have them be hopeless and clueless, cuz hot but dumb in certain scenarios. Sam had always been my favorite character and it was because she was the Daphne of the show from the episodes I did managed to watch growing up.
She was my favorite too because she was the most relatable to me, so I was getting annoyed when she was the one getting captured or brainwashed like come on, let her do her thing! I'm not sure if she was in that situation more than the other girls, she might have not been, but it stuck out more to me.
I honestly hope you talk about Martin mystery, since the series is pretty good when it comes to its horror and mystery. Also the show exist in the same universe as totally spies which is neat.🐱
I remember me and my sister we loved the show as kids and so in 2019 when we were rewatching it we were excited that in one of the episodes they went to Iceland, our country! Only to find out they did igloos... Iceland has never lived in igloos, we lived in dirt houses. Igloos would never last.
Totally Spies was and is still my favorite Marathon/Cartoon Network cartoon! I would always tune in every time it was on the TV schedule. I absolutely flipped out when they announced their movie! I remember watching it the night it aired and it was almost done but then then my mom told me I had to go bed. I was not happy! I tried to persuade her to let me stay up a bit longer but no luck! 😆
I hate how this show is seen as just a kink show when what ppl point out as “kinks” r just jokes/tropes a billion other kids shows had & still have hell even other media like marvel/DC
Yeah I feel liek the real explanation is, that they mentionned towards the end, that it's not so much that this show was just made by a bunch of perverts but that society has turned pretty much everything into a fetish and finds it normal to sexualize everything women do. Like a lot of those happen in a lot of media, but are never questionned this much when more men are on screen. You could make a sus counter with marvel comics as well but it wouldn't get viral the way it does with girls and women. Why? Because society values sexualizing women's bodies more, and is more neutral about doing to me, so people get more riled up and puritant in response when it involves female bodies. Isn't it a famous rule of the internet that everything that exist can and has been sexualized by someone? To assume everyone is aware of every such creations and purposefully recreating them is bizarre, and being aware of all of them and seeing them everywhere is much weirder. I know people mostly point them out as a joke but it feels very misogynistic to me when people treat those assumptions as facts about the creators and the show. You high key have to see women as sexual objects first and foremost to have this on your mind to this degree when watching a kid's show. And of course if you compile them and hyper focus on those images in a vacuum it becomes easy to form such a narrative. If you're specifically binging and searching for something pervers, everything will start to feel this way, especially when it involves women.
Also, ropes and tiding up someone make sense for a spies serie. You capture the mains characters, put them in a risky situation but give them enough time to go out. Like the villains will make the spies don't be a problem, and the alternative to tie them is not friendly and not useful for the mains characters (they need to continue with live to appear in the next chapter)
Yeah tbh I wouldn’t even know or think about it like that as a kid when I watched the show. Just funny kid stuff lol I think due to people (adults) realizing how creepy some creators of shows are they tend to project that creepiness onto other things. Call me a dumbass but I wouldn’t think of these as kinks right away as an adult. Maybe weird, but eh kinks?
@@Mar_Selcouth literally. Kim Possible was the other big spy girl show out at around the same time. Kim gets tied up all the time. Nobody seems to think there was any adult meaning for that. James Bond was another insipration for this show. Bond gets tied up constantly. Scooby Doo? Lots of tying people up. The entire Mystery Inc gang, villains.... also Charlie's Angels, the biggest influence on this show, had lots of tying the Angels up
@@KookiesNolly exactly. There is a reason that people rarely sexualize the amount of peril James Bond gets into. Or they sexualize Daphne and Velma in Scooby Doo but never Fred or Shaggy. Heck even women sometimes don't get this "kink show" treatment. I never see people call Kim Possible a kink show despite her constantly being tied up, or her wearing miniskirts and midriff bearing outfits. I never see people call Sailor Moon a kink show even though frankly it's most of the time kinkier than TS ever was. I don't see peoplw calling Dosney movies kinky considering there are a lot of movies that feature a female character tied up at some point, especially starting around the 80s and 90s. I never see people call Winx Club a kink show despite the girls wearing revealing outfits and again often being tied up
15:00 "that kidnapped all the most famous actors and brought them to an island" *eyebrows collectively raise* "that's a massive movie set filled with deadly traps" *eyebrows collectively lower*
I keep hearing about the fetishes/sus stuff hidden in this show and I just can't see it aside from obvious "inspect your corn" lines. I did not stumble on this show as a child, I was actually already in college when I binged all seasons. Either I'm very innocent (doubt) or people just want to ruin others nostalgia...or they really are pervs.
Tbh a lot of the 'fetish stuff' in Totally Spies are just common tropes that pop up all the time in other cartoons. It's seriously not difficult to find shows that have some kind of bondage, transformation, growth/shrinking/kaiju, exploring the inside of a character, or mind control plot. Unless people are gonna say The Magic Schoolbus is a fetish show because of the episode where they shrink down to explore Ralphie.
@@shrimpdan2557 yeah not gonna lie, it's seems to me that people only over focus on TS with this bc someone made a viral video but given that pretty much everything is a kink out there, you could analyse anything that way. You can honestly start any narrative you want by picking 10 second clips of any episodes of anything to form a convincing narrative. To me it's very much an "eye of the viewer" experiment that says more about the kind of internet content you consume than the show itself bc the tropes are so common in media. In fact it's probably innocent usage of those tropes that have inspired some to create fetish content using those tropes, that people stumble on online and then start to believe the fetish came before the trope instead of the reverse.
@@shrimpdan2557exactly. Its the internet blowing things up. Almosy every single thing in existence is a kink for someone. The clothes shrinker and the filimg Sam in the shower are the only really weird things. Everything else is really objective. It's like, there are lots of cartoons that do this. Other popular cartoons like Carmen Sandiego, Teen Titans, Batman, Superman, Scooby Doo, Sailor Moon, Winx Club and Kim Possible have a ton of tying the characters up yet nobody makes a hullaballoo about that. Animaniacs is also super naughty and sus almost ALL the time. Also no hullaballo over that. And the show also has inspiration from anime, but also the Charlie's Angels movie (which admitedly was pretty kinky) and James Bond. TS isn't any weirder than any of those other things.
I can attest to this. I watched Totally Spies as a kid and it was that awesome spy show with loveable characters just like Kim Possible. Some of the adult jokes I noticed upon rewatch are pretty tame and even hilariously subtle at best. We just live in a world where even the mild wink makes people go AWOOOOGAAAAA
I honestly don’t remember anything concerning the storylines or plot(holes), but I remember a lot of makeup-turned-spygear and I also appreciated how unique their character designs were. They felt like three individuals that come together as friends (and spies), instead of being carbon copies. Also, I watched this around the same time as Charlie‘s Angels so this comparison will forever stay in my head.
@4:45 living in La myself, I was so impressed and LOVED the joke about the valley (it’s referencing the San Fernando valley) it’s such a good niche joke that only angelinos understand. Basically “west siders” see the valley as so uncool and far away that calling the Middle Ages country side as the valley is hilarious
39:55 oh yeah absolutely, esp since pretty much ANYTHING can be a fetish. i can think of quite a few examples from the counter that are in other family friendly media that people generally dont blink an eye at. so i think it was a good decision to stop the counter especially since it was making you uncomfortable. and your point about it being a show centered around women.... yeah. yeah. definitely. this is an episodic animated cartoon that has so many seasons, about spys with fantasy spy gear and villains where u can do so much with the medium? of course they're gonna have fun with what they animate, and do wacky and entertaining stuff for the target audience, which are kids that have huuuuge imaginations. they're gonna run into some things being a fetish unintentionally, bc of how wide and random or specific a fetish can be, and we can only speculate what is intentional unless the creators or writers state it themselves.
There was also a spin-off called amazing spies or something where these four siblings are spies and Jerry is also their handlers and the girls make a cameo for a two parter episode.
I always assumed they kidnapped sam the most because she was the 'smart one' and they needed her gone to get the 'well yeah that _seems_ like a plothole, and sam would have noticed, but she wasnt there, so its not a plothole' excuse or sth
The episode where the villains kidnap models and steal their parts to stitch them to others/themselves scared me so much as a kid. I kept thinking someone might steal my legs when I sleep and replace them with someone else's.
I wish you said more about Boogie Gus, he is part of LAMOS. It’s cool how he time traveled, made an anti aging ray and he has a 70s/80s style. In the Amazing Spiez, Gus has a son.
I always loved Totally Spies. They are the cliché of the three pretty girls obsessed with shopping, yet they are not demonized because of how femenine they are. Clover is the closest example. She is the blonde girl, boy crazy, compulsive shopper, trend follower, who is always figthing mandy, but she along Alex and Sam are the "good guys" who save the day. My favorite thing about them were the gadgets they had. The gadgets were usually things that are consider "girly"or"femenine" : compowdesr, laser lipstick, Data Processor Pendant, Freeze Bracelet, Flashlight Ring, Parachute Purse, anti-gravity gogo boots, etc.
Same. This show, Powerpuff Girls and Kim Possible weren't afraid to have girly characters still be cool action heroes. 😁 I always love themed gadgets like the hairdryer grappling hook and suction cup go-go boots.
This, "Mandy is so annoying" and "I've never wanted to punch someone as much as Mandy" made me laugh so hard! I don't hear my name most of the time but- oh my god, it was like they where saying my thoughts out loud. (Also my partner watched this show as a kid and- look all I'm gonna say is, I'm gonna ask her if my name being in this show made her into me lol)
I really liked Totally Spies when i was a kid, i even had a magazine that gave toy gadgets (there were red, green and yellow variations that you could get) i remember having yellow sunglasses that had mirrors so you could see what was going on behind you and a green flashlight ring, they also had the logo on them... to be honest i miss your old videos that you even searched for obscure tie-in products (i loved that, because i had some). The girls always reminded me of the Powerpuff Girls, because they were color-coded too and they were heroes too... also Mandy always reminded me of Gem Stone from Sabrina the teenage witch animated show. You could recap that one too sometime. Another show i loved watching is Princess Sissi (1997), i had a magazine of that too and i had posters ( i think i still have them stapled on the wood parts of my old bunk-bed that are now in the storage room)... but yeah, maybe you can recap that show sometime too! I think i got a little excited on this comment...
my personal theory for david was that firstly, he likes guys, and in the episode ski trip which is like one of the last times we see him, he ends up dating the guy clover liked from the ski resort place.
Man, I should rewatch this show! Watching this recap made me remember how fun Totally Spies was. I was a teenager when this show aired and back then I couldn't stand anything that I deemed 'too girly', but Totally Spies was cool and funny. It was Charlie's Angels meets James Bond and I was THERE for that.
Just clicked on the video, already feeling happy about you covering this show! I had a lot of totally spies magazines when I was younger, and they were so much fun 😭💖🤲 Even tho they were mostly comic versions of episodes with some added stuff And also I liked the show, sus parts were completly erased from my memory till recent times 😅
Unhinged tecaps are how i stay current on the slang the youth are using, and when its cartoons from my childhood, it trigger all the mellennial nostalgia.
I still remember growing up when girl group trios were dominating the market: Totally Spies, Charlie's Angels, Powerpuff Girls, YRP (FFX-2) and so many more.
25:25 omg it's so funny to me that you used a cover of a bibliothèque rose book! Those books are very popular with french kids, I grew up with them, they often tell the stories of already existing shows like the Winx and W.I.T.C.H, or Totally Spies!
I'm only 15 minutes in so idk if you're going to mention this or not so i'm gonna say it in the comments. The beauty standard and the contribution to the thought of what girls should look like that was in totally spies was crazyyyy 😭. I know a lot of people are going to say "its just for consistency" or "It's the art style of the show" but hello literally all the female characters in this show are skinny, have small waists and facial features that are specifically seen as desirable and that fit the beauty standard. Totally spies is on of my favourite childhood shows and in generally favourite shows of all time but I can't lie, looking at all the white men and villain characters that have one of my insecurities and then looking at the female characters to see that none o them have it is quite soul crushing. I know the show wasn't made to raise awareness of others insecurities but it's clear to me what they were trying to show with how certain characters looked.
Back when I was an admin for TSPA Forums (Totally Spies Picture Archive Forums) I did an interview with the creator David Michel back right before season 3 premiered, and he stated they were HEAVILY influenced by The O.C. and Buffy at the time (and Charlie's Angels ofc)
My wife and I have this working theory that WOOHP isn't actually a government agency, Jerry is just rich as hell, loves messing with people, and no state on earth can stop him. Also, Jerry is 100% gay and I will not be convinced otherwise.
Idk if anyone else saw it but there was a huge thread on Twitter about each niche kink that is in the show. It was my introduction to the show as I didn't watch it as a kid😭
I have been obsessed with Manny Wong’s nail designs since I was a child and I’m glad to say that’s still a thing. Like I want to pull them out of my tv.
There is a fan theory about the girls being just decoys, and while they distract the villains, the real agents fix everything. Also, Gladys left WOOHP because she got a job at Aperture Science.
I just wanna say gorg that you’re a huge inspiration for me. I’ve never felt more valid being a queer person in the way that you show you so much beauty. Thank you, I know it sounds crazy but you make me feel more comfortable about people’s perceptions.
So you never mentioned it but there was a spin off series called The Amazing Spiez, which aired in 2009, it followed a different group of spies who happened to all be siblings.
38:57 Well... You know, there seems to be about one year left to achieve those cool and futuristic architectural changes.. 👀 Nahh, I don't believe it to really happen. 🤣
The reason G.L.A.D.I.S isn't in Season 5 is because fans did not like her at all. Not one single fan in the past liked G.L.A.D.I.S, and the creators listened to that and said "You know what? If the fans really hate this character, let's just write her off." And that's what they did and gave an explanation to the girls on where the hell G.L.A.D.I.S went.
I know you said that Martin Mystery wasn't as popular, but I really enjoyed it. The horror/spooky stuff was really cool and it also gave me the want to know more about the actual monsters/myths that they use for the show.
I'm surprised you didn't note that the moms were redesigned. They went from looking similar to being literal clones of them. It's a shame they did that.

its also the era of female saviors, totally spies, kimpossible, winx, sailor moon if you count anime (wich we didnt have that on tv sadly) and also its a longer running show...
am i forgetting anything?
Fun fact: The original concept of Totally Spies was supposed to be a girl group who are promoting their career. Sam was supposed to be young member and Alex was supposed to be the leader and Korean or Japanese (they kept the these origins in the actual but we don't actually know her origins, they said she's European & Asiatic. There is lost media video of Fox Kids Nederlands which have some cut of the lost pilot/prototype episode online❤️💛💚

@@estebangutierrez160 yup

I do like the idea that the parents have to be the superheroes while their children who are superheroes are either MIA, captured, or something.
Yeah it’s always a fun trope!
I really hated how they changed their mom’s designs. They used to be original in season 2 and then became just older versions of the girls… Also Alex’s dad in season 6 is a completely different man…

You think Daphne is the smart one from Scooby doo?
Have you seen literally a single episode of Scooby Doo?
I love the lolirock joke that you just put clover Alex and Sam's faces over Ariana Talia and Iris face!
I can't believe you didn't include furry Clover in the sus counter, that scene lives rent free in my head
Fun fact: in the latinamerican dub, the whole series was translated as "Three Spies Unlimited"...which yeah, they went beyond limits often.
The title is similar in Brazilian Portuguese! "Three Awesome Spies"

Totally Spies was and is still my favorite Marathon/Cartoon Network cartoon! I would always tune in every time it was on the TV schedule. I absolutely flipped out when they announced their movie!
Just funny kid stuff lol
I think due to people (adults) realizing how creepy some creators of shows are they tend to project that creepiness onto other things.
I'm glad I wasn't the only one😅
This show was never about the quality but just a big fever dream and I’m all here for it.
love it that htey say hiatus as "ha-yah-tus" but it's actually "hai-ay-tus"
The Amazing spiez and those kids were fricken middle schoolers
LMAO you said the bechdel test and i immediately also thought of "clover wont let you"
I always assumed they kidnapped sam the most because she was the 'smart one' and they needed her gone to get the 'well yeah that _seems_ like a plothole, and sam would have noticed, but she wasnt there, so its not a plothole' excuse or sth
The episode where the villains kidnap models and steal their parts to stitch them to others/themselves scared me so much as a kid. I kept thinking someone might steal my legs when I sleep and replace them with someone else's.
The ibuprofen necklace made me look for a link faster than I've ever looked for a link before, thank you for that inspiration
Totally spies was one of those shows I'd watch whenever it came on as a kid. The dolphin episode scarred me.
I wish you said more about Boogie Gus, he is part of LAMOS. It’s cool how he time traveled, made an anti aging ray and he has a 70s/80s style. In the Amazing Spiez, Gus has a son.
Ok, but imagine Negative Legend making a 10 hour video reviewing every episode.
Love it!
Fun fact! The movie's villain Fabu is voiced by Karl Lagerfeld in French, which imo makes him a lot funnier :')

I would have lime the spin off The Amazing Spiez to get a mention in this video specially since Clover Sam and Alex do appear in that show as cameos
I think this is the earliest I have ever been on any video ever.

I still remember growing up when girl group trios were dominating the market: Totally Spies, Charlie's Angels, Powerpuff Girls, YRP (FFX-2) and so many more.
Aww you mentioned YRP. Loved playing FFX-2 growing up! Paine was my favorite. ❤
Totally Spies holds a special place in my heart. You're right btw, this show definitely appeals to both guys and girls.
Totally Spies was a HUGE part of my college life. I'm still pretty upset about the voice acting changes (the second ones).
This is PERFECT
My wife and I have this working theory that WOOHP isn't actually a government agency, Jerry is just rich as hell, loves messing with people, and no state on earth can stop him. Also, Jerry is 100% gay and I will not be convinced otherwise.

Nahh, I don't believe it to really happen.

Totally Spies had a lot of throwbacks to the 80's, the metal bikinis at 19:50 was a reference to the Fembots from Austin Powers
Alex is the most athletic of the 3, yet is also the clumsiest of them. Sam is the smartest of them yet also seemingly the most susceptible to mind control/hypnosis. Clover is the most charismatic one yet often is the one most subjected to things thst would make her seem unattractive. They all have their niche, but the writers never forgot to play up the foil to that niche regularly.
My sisters I loved totally spies because it was a show with 3 main characters who had different hair colours , so it was easy to decide " who got to be "
First time viewer of your work here, loved this recap of one of my favorite shows! I haven't delved into any of Season 7 yet, but I'm really looking forward to checking it out when I can get my hands on it.
Why did they change the moms’ character designs in season 3? The designs in their first appearance were good. You could clearly see the resemblance between mother and daughter without just looking like older/ younger copies of each other, like they do in season 3
Half the time Negative Legend sounds like Sokka and the other half they sound like Finn from adventure time
