It's one of the most incredible thing ever. When the moth is trying to go out, the cocoon has a little opening thingy made just for that! It's so fascinating

ABSOLUTELY!!
Actually, moths secrete a liquid from their mouths before they emerge that fizzles away the cocoon so they can emerge! That's why silk worms are boiled to death while still in their cocoons so that the silk cocoon will be one continuous silk strand and yield more profit. If the moth emerges it weakens the strand and damages the cocoons value.
I guess you were referring to the brown shell/pupa lol sorry I'm not trying to sound snooty or anything! I'm literally just obsessed w moths!!...like obsessed. The pupa actually is neat..after it's dried and ready to be broken out of, the little lines and sections or markings on it kinda just tear since the moth is pushing against it, but it pops open so neat and tidy!

My daughter and I just watched this together. She’s 4 and has autism. Butterflies and moths are some of her favorite animals! This is a beautiful video of metamorphosis and is a fantastic way to teach her about life cycles!

It always amazes me how large the range of colors caterpillars can change into as the molt. As if the moth and butterfly stages werent precious enough. Mother nature knows how to dress her babies in style.
This is one of the most beautiful transformations in nature, it's just magnificent from the birth to the final stage, I enjoyed every second, thank you!
We humans have such an amazing world/planet. If only we can stop of the hatred and fighting...and take a look and appreciate the astounding beauty, we have all around us!!

The final stage is a tiny part of their life. I raise dragonflies, and they are often 2 years as nymphs before becoming dragonflies (for 2 weeks :/ )

This entire metamorphosis can take 30 days, and is AWESOME to watch but it's also amazing in that time that this insect is very vulnerable to prey and to complete the transformation is truly as amazing. I'm also pretty sure this was in a controlled environment. ☺

In elementary school, we kept Monarch caterpillars and then released them when they turned into butterflies. To this day, I love butterflies and moths.

From crawling inch by inch to flying high in sky.. What an experience he must have had..
What i learned about certain caterpillar species is that each time they molt, they can look very different! But their biggest change happens when they turn into butterflies/moths, which is something I already knew.
Since there are a lot of hawk moth species, this is specifically the spurge hawk moth on its most common larval food plant, cypress spurge.
