Love your content. 11:46 it's a G13 (implies there's a 9th but it's missing here) alternatively G6/7th in bass. The walk down at 19:14 is great. It can be interpreted a few different ways. G(3rd in bass) or Em7 (5th in bass) => D#7(5th in bass) or Bbdim or A7b9 (b9 in bass) => D7(5th in bass) => G7. Which would give you a 1 2 (tritone sub) 5 1 or 6m 2(tritone sub) 5 1 or a chromatic descend 6m 6b 5 1. I think the 2nd one (6m 2(tritone sub) 5 1) is probably the origin of that walk down.
I really appreciate your comment here.. but this is exactly the type of super confusing overthinking theory that I’m trying to steer people away from! It’s about the way it sounds in context. Especially the walk down you’re referencing.
@@guthrietrappmusic Trust me, I know I can definitely overthink theory, as I did in that turn around. I've learned in the past many turn arounds that sounded great or almost great and couldn't figure out why they worked. Sometimes the theory gets in the way, sometimes it helps me figure out variations. Sometimes it helped just listening to the music those people were listening to, and the origin of the "lick" revealed itself. Keep the good content on, love your playing. Do you ever tour around CT?
What an amazing lesson. Going to be stuck on this one for awhile. And the turnarounds. The 9’s could be made into a T-shirt. “Make it a 10, with a 9 chord” or whatever. You are incredible TY
THANK YOU FOR THE TIME YOU DEVOTE TO US. SINCE I HAVE BECOME A SUBSCRIBER I HAVE CHANGED MY WAY OF SEEING THINGS WITH MORE MUSICALITY WITHOUT PEDAL OR OTHER ARTIFICE. HELLO FROM FRANCE
Hey Guthrie ,just love it when you say 'Watch This', it's always a revelation. Absolutely blown away with your insights and generous communication ,way beyond my level .....But I just keep taking it in. Best wishes to you and yours and Thank you.
When I’m playing blues in G, I harken to Miles’ “All blues” and or ABB version of “Stormy Monday” with that fantastic walk-up. Thanks GT ! Cheers from Thailand ! 😎🇺🇸🇹🇭🇺🇸⚓️🎸✅☕️🤠😎
I always on rollerscates while i am playing with the band, i use the thing i hear and putt chords around while playing! When we play for an audience i know that i can make a mistake, but its nice to do!
All I can say is thank you! Your ability to explain the connective tissue between basic chord voicing for us non-monsters is so appreciated. An absolute must learn for anyone with a desire to express themselves with a guitar. You nailed it Guthrie!
Man, you're so damn genuine - this channel is such a treat, and you can tell we all just appreciate it so much. You always mention that you put fairly little time into these freebie lessons and life updates, but sitting down with my guitar and queuing up your videos has given me so many lightbulb moments, there are just so many tasty nuggets that you seem to intersperse so casually. You get me to pick up the instrument and not just noodle and play the same shit over and over. Thank you so much!
same for me i learned tons from GT into 5 years after picking dusty guitar back ,after 20 years..playing on a daily base learning practicer and understand intervals scales ,triad jezus so many light bulbs :) iam so happy now i actuly understand, what i am playing and having blast with guitar, btw love blues love GT phraising.
Thanks for redefining the 9th chords and similar shapes. They really can be played anywhere on the neck as you've shown. Beautiful G walkdown turn around too! Using less than the six strings was an important lesson today for me as well. Thanks bro!
That chord at the 11:40 mark is a favorite of mine too. I call it the Josh Smith chord, because he was the one where I first learned it. He says it was a game changing chord for him when he first discovered it. Thanks as always GT for great, insightful tips and tricks in these mini lessons. Much appreciated.
Been learning more from your channel than any other one. I pretty much understood most of what you’re doing in the video. Plus, I love the improvisation and groovy but relaxed tones. 🎸👌
10:29 I ran across this video on 1/2/25! I don't know how I could've missed it! And, there's lots of guitar goodness in here! Keep it up, Githrie! I don't mean just the music --of course i appreciate THAT-- but slso the stories, the "How my day went," everything! Jus' keepin' it REAL! 👍👍👍
Such an awesome lesson Guthrie, thank you. Will probably need to watch it about 100 times for it all to sink in thought 🤣🤦🏼♂️, keep them coming they are very much appreciated
Killing show on Wednesday night at the Bitter End. Wish they'd move that piano so we can see you all, but we snuck into a spare seat and got some time for the last third. There was an absolutely burning solo I took a video of. Cant' see the neck, but we can see your excitement. Cheers and its a pleasure to see you in NYC.
Wonderful chord lesson, I use them a lot learn some of them from the great record of Johnny Adams "Walking on a tight rope" where are some killer guitars
Been a follower for a long time now and after just practicing this video for the past 2 hour the guilt was too much, I had to do the PayPal thing. His teaching style for where I’m at is perfect. Hoping he eventually does show in the Fort Lauderdale area.
At 15:10 you show a G7 chord which has the B7 shape. I stole the Merle Travis version where he wraps his thumb over the top to grab the entire B7 shape. It takes some getting used to, but it sounds awesome.
I was an ER doctor for 43 years and a full court bb player x 55 years-with lap swimming along the way.Susequently I have bilateral torn rotator cuffs.I couldn't sleep at times with supraspinatous muscle pain., I could not brush my hair, right arm too weak anything above my head.. I tried:Prolotherapy, acupuncture, physical therapy ,steroid shots,Chinrse medicine. NO improvement ...until I got this....I took two weeks to go up a weight.2 or so years ago=this was the only thing that helped.Pain mostly went away, i can easily brush my hair.I'll never be able to swim(hurts).I am very thankful for this remarkable invention! Sincerely, Jon(AKA Dijon)
Ok Guthrie, you got me. I've looked at your videos occasionally over the years and they've always appeared to be so over my head I didn't go deep. I decided to give this one a go and it really is pure gold. I'm now a subscriber and a believer and I won't give up on myself so easily. Only way to get better is to try something that looks too hard. Thanks so much for your effort.
Awesome lesson Guthrie. Thank you. Just switched from a 2mm Gator Grip pick to a .7mm D’Adarrio after watching you and Uncle Larry with Beato. Very happy I did. Also started playing with the shoulder too. Much faster and smoother. Thanks again for all you do man!
At 11:48 that is a really cool voicing. It's movable and puts the b7 on the bottom. The chord is defined by the top note ( as shown it's the G) it's a G13. From top to bottom = R-13th-3rd-b7. Or X-5-6-6-5-X would be E13. Move this shape anywhere and the top note is the root.
Guthrie….thanks for a killer night one at the bitter end. Total FIRE. On a playing note….youve said the CAGED system was a game changer for you. I’m just starting to play around with it and my knowledge of theory is extremely limited being self taught by ear my whole life. Hoping it starts to click.
Glad everything is coming together for you. Teaming up with Tom totally cool move. I don't know where you find the time for us mortals. Your showing things I should have learned years ago is much appreciated bro. Thanks for sharing
Perfect lesson, I can watch, emulate, and make music. And then move it all around to any key! Thank you Guthrie, from a guy who got to see you at the Underdog awhile back.
Hey Guthrie, Thank you for all these cool free lessons man. I'm learning guitar and love that Tele of yours.. Hope to get one soon. Something about the Telecaster! Anyway, greetings from New Zealand - appreciate the content bro. So great to see someone like you doing and sharing your talent in a positive way. Wish you all the best.
Hey Guthrie Love your playing man because you’re such an organic natural player and your touch and feel and sense of melody is outstanding. Guthrie Govan and other musicians use the analogy that music is a language (which it is), and it’s clear that you speak it fluently which is why your music communicates to music lovers so effortlessly. I have a few thoughts on how players can become more fluent in music as a language and I’m wondering if you would agree? I have noticed that musicians who come from a bluegrass background (which is a traditional form of music) as young musicians really develop organically and can more easily then communicate in any style. Would love to hear your thoughts on this. Maybe if you have time you could share your thoughts in a video with examples? Thanks for all you do.
